All Nonwhite Converging on Hypernegative View of GOP

A new poll from DailyKos/Research 2000 shows Latino support for the Republican Party dropping like a stone, perhaps due to the racist attacks on Sonia Sotomayor from many prominent conservative commentators:

race

You essentially see Hispanics and “others” converging with African-Americans’ dim view of the Republicans. An interesting question here is whether this is a genuine meeting of the minds, or else just an artifact of the reality that black support for Republicans is pushing up against the zero bound, so that as a sinking tide drowns the GOP boat among all racial groups, the black/non-black gap necessarily gets smaller.

  1. Steve Sailer Says:

Again Matt, you fail to see the data behind the data.

The ‘favorable’ response of Whites and the ‘unfavorable’ response of Blacks correlate strongly with penis size for those ethnic groups; which, as you know, has itself an inverse correlation with IQ.

Are you circumsised by the way?

  2. ed Says:

Thanks, Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, et al!

  3. BarryG Says:

I like the idea of GOP support pushing *up* against the zero bound.

Oh, and is that the real Steve Sailer, or a fake? In any case, that comment needs to go away.

  4. Adam Says:

    Fake Steve,

I’m pretty sure the “Others” group consists largely of Asians, so you should probably account for that in your theory.

  5. mpowell Says:

That chart is amazing. You can’t take it too seriously, though, since plenty of white people still vote for the Republicans. It is not the same as ‘will never vote for an R’, which is where 90% of black people are at, of course.

  6. mpowell Says:

I will add that I agree that people are right to be worried about single party domination. It is much less democratic for our politicians to be determined in primaries where the reduced visibility of the race leads to winners determined more by party structure than voter mandate. I think this may be part of the problem with civic governance in localities completely dominated by the Dems.

  7. Steve Sailer Says:

I’m pretty sure the “Others” group consists largely of Asians, so you should probably account for that in your theory.

Adam, you’ve clearly never been to Thailand or Vietnam. I have done extensive research to back my scientific claims, and some of the boys there are spectacularly well hung, even without a sufficient dairy intake.

On what do you base your ‘knowledge’ of Asian penis size? It couldn’t be prejudice, could it? I didn’t think liberals were allowed such a thing.

  8. Why oh why Says:

All this talk about race is something the GOP will use to beat Democrats over the head next election!

  9. Notorious P.A.T. Says:

Fortunately the Republican party knows just how to handle this situation: “Hispanic voters only support Democrats because of the promise of favors. Democrats are like pimps, which implies that Hispanics are like hookers.”

  10. DTM Says:

An interesting question here is whether this is a genuine meeting of the minds, or else just an artifact of the reality that black support for Republicans is pushing up against the zero bound. . . .

They sometimes give two positive and two negative options in these polls, such that you can get an idea of intensity and not just valence. So in trying to answer this question, I would start there.

  11. Opie Curious Says:

Ezra just yesterday was talking about Stein’s Law. I think it’s definitely coming into play here. And I can’t wait for the breathless news stories about the GOP’s impressive political recovery when its numbers stop dropping and begin to stabilize because they just can’t keep going down forever.

  12. K in VA Says:

Many of us whites aren’t too impressed, either.

  13. Notorious P.A.T. Says:

I will add that I agree that people are right to be worried about single party domination.

You are right. The middle of the 20th century, when Democrats dominated, was a horrible time. Our country wasn’t able to overcome any challenges, or improve anyone’s quality of life, or extend anyone’s civil rights.

We go to the ballot box with the parties we have, not the ones we want. I’ll take Democrats and no one over Democrats and Republicans.

  14. Njorl Says:

I think Republicans can take solace in the fact that if their favorables hit zero across the board, their unfavorables will probably start dropping, until someday, they too will hit zero.

  15. Brent Says:

I realize intensity matters some, but I think at the end of the day this is still a meeting of the minds whether or not one group is up against the zero bound already or not.

In other words, is there really much of a substantive difference in the reason these two groups show similar numbers of GOP dislike? This is basically the same story. It’s just that Republicans are kinda giving up on latinos, which probably would’ve happened sooner had Bush not been selected in 2000.

  16. Adam Says:

I will add that I agree that people are right to be worried about single party domination.

I am also. That’s why I fully support the liberal wing of the Democratic party splitting off from the rest of the party, with the Blue Dogs and three sane Republicans left forming the right-wing opposition. The rest of the Republicans can enjoy the relevance level of Ron Paul.

  17. james Says:

This chart only reflects the mood of the nation. African Americans will never vote for a repube cause they don’t and never have wanted us in their caucus, just our votes. We see this with Michael Steele, the new token for their party. Now the rest of the country is seeing the petty repubelican party for what it is, a bunch of racist, out of touch old white men who don’t ever want to relinquish their imaginary right to lead this nation. The funny stat is the favorable white view which is under 40%. With numbers like these, the old white men will become the minority or just get voted out. The latter of the two is much more attractive. The country is changing and mindsets like the GOP are disappearing quickly.

  18. Steve Says:

The legacy of the Southern strategy: Republican irrelevance.

  19. Al Says:

shows Latino support for the Republican Party dropping like a stone

No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t any direction of change whatsoever, since there is no comparison to any prior poll.

  20. Don Williams Says:

    1) Bottom LINE 1: Anyone who favors the Republican Party, by definition, is a severely retarded Moron.

    Evidence:

The last three Republican Presidents personally approved $9 TRILLION in debt.

The last Republican President alone ran up $6 Trillion in debt, wasted $2 Trillion (and 4500+ Lives) in an unnecessary war, let Bin Laden go free, gave the Superrich $2 Trillion from the Treasury and paid for the above, in part, by stealing $3 Trillion from our Social Security accounts. PLus let Wall Street run the economy over a cliff by refusing to regulate irresponsibility.

    2) Bottom Line 2: As Matthew’s chart shows, the majority of severely retarded Morons is overwhelming concentrated within the White portion of the American population.

NB!!! Which conclusively refutes Steve Sailor et al re the Intelligence Bell Curve.

Although , in fairness to the White People, it should be noted that not ALL of them are retarded — just 1 out of 3.

  21. Steve Sailer Says:

My life of promoting the white man is made so much harder with dumb cunts like you Al.

    Jesus.

  22. Don Williams Says:

Where Matthew’s chart is misleading is that it implies the voting classes are all of the same size. They , of course, are not — Whites still make up a large percentage of US population so there are a lot of severely retarded morons out there to support Fox News Nielsen numbers.

  23. MBunge Says:

“You are right. The middle of the 20th century, when Democrats dominated, was a horrible time. Our country wasn’t able to overcome any challenges, or improve anyone’s quality of life, or extend anyone’s civil rights.”

    1. I think the post WWII economic dominance enjoyed by the U.S. in the mid 20th Century had more to do with improving things in the country than any political party.

    2. You might want to check into how much the Democratic Party needed liberal Republicans to get done much of the stuff you’re talking about.

    Mike

  24. mpowell Says:

I am also. That’s why I fully support the liberal wing of the Democratic party splitting off from the rest of the party, with the Blue Dogs and three sane Republicans left forming the right-wing opposition. The rest of the Republicans can enjoy the relevance level of Ron Paul.

I agree with this in principle, I just don’t think the Republican party is dead enough yet. I’m just pointing out that the process of eliminating a political party and splitting the remaining one is not actually the ideal process. In some sense, it represents a failure of the political system.

  25. kamenwati Says:

Professional racist Steve Sailer doesn’t have an I.Q. or a penis and is still a “dick.”

  26. Steve Says:

That’s why I fully support the liberal wing of the Democratic party splitting off from the rest of the party, with the Blue Dogs and three sane Republicans left forming the right-wing opposition.

If Obama gets some Blue Dogs to vote on his health care plan, it’s a bipartisan plan.

  27. Byron York Says:

Matt what this clearly shows is that ratings for Republicans are *actually* higher than it appears if you account for low ratings among African-Americans and Latinos.

  28. Anna Says:

Sailer’s name should be entered into ‘Dickipedia.’

  29. Adam Villani Says:

No, it doesn’t. It doesn’t any direction of change whatsoever, since there is no comparison to any prior poll.

Al actually has a point here. Can we at least see a link to some earlier polls? I don’t think the Republicans polled this badly among Latinos before, but I can’t say for sure without some earlier data.

  30. Totay Says:

Bush won around 44% of the Hispanic vote against Kerry, so this does indicate much worse Hispanic support of Republicans than in the past.

  31. Rhea Says:

GOP never cared about miniorty interest and discouraged their membership for decades. Forget them now. Go put the sheets back on.

  32. Packeryman Says:

The Republican party is dying a slow death. They have lost Blacks, Hispanics, Gays, the Youth, Females, and the Independents(swing vote). If they follow the insane advice of Limbaugh, Hannity, Cheney, flush and purge the party of moderates and Rino’s, they will continue to loose voters. Most American voters are in the middle of the political spectrum. If the party wishes to prove this political theory of returning to their conservative ideas, then run Huckabee and Palin. They will go down in worst defeat than Goldwater 1964. The party has been highjacked by the religious right. With the changing demographics of America it should be a very long time before the reactionary ideology of the Republicans wins favor with voters. They have become obstructionist and the party of no.

  33. Why oh why Says:

    Adam,
On the poll from Apr 27, 2009 – Apr 30, 2009, it was:
    WHITE 28 61 11
    BLACK 2 97 1
    LATINO 14 73 13
    OTHER/REF 11 77 12

    Now it is:
    WHITE 31 64 5
    BLACK 3 94 3
    LATINO 8 86 6
    OTHER/REF 9 84 7

The real news is that support for the GOP among blacks has jumped by 50% (!) in a few weeks. Obviously the current strategy is working, and Boehner will become Speaker in 2010!

  34. Adam Villani Says:

    Thanks, Y.O.Y.

  35. Rick Says:

Wow, Steve Sailer, if what you say is true, you must be hung like a horse…

  36. Kelly Says:

FYI – most Whites aren’t big fans of the GOP these days either. This particular White was never a GOP fan.

  37. Eman Says:

The problem is the party does not reflect america. Thats their main problem. U constantly see old male whites representing the party. They have no clue and r not inclusive. They have members making insensitive racial comments. They have Rush , Hannity and Beck looking like fools. They have shot themselves in the foot. I mean they will make a comeback but it will be short lived. Whites r becoming a minority and they dont appeal to other ethnic groups or younger voters at all…

  38. majii Says:

I can tell you that what the graph shows is generally true. I am an African American who comes into contact with Latinos on a regular basis. Most of them and most of the African Americans I know dislike republicans more now than in the past. They feel that since Obama became president the republicans feel no compulsion to hide how they feel about minorities. They are also very much aware of the blatant racism coming from republicans they see on teevee and read about on the intertubes.

  39. Bob Robert Says:

    To Steve Sailer:

To be able to waste your time to do research on asian penis size shows not only a pathetic, purposeless filthy little trash who has a deviant animalistic mind set but the fact that you’re probably ashamed to say that your own sister is your mom because your dad probably had sex with all of you.
But it shows too that wingnuts like you should be closely watched as the neo-nazi pedophile named Von Brown clearly demonstrated.

Now please go back to your cell with your swastika lover and next time go on drudge.

  40. James Martinez Says:

The Rethuglicans are just baffled how a President like Obama with a great intellect and the ability to communicate could possibly get elected after the two lame brains bush and cheney ran the country into the ground…totally…and proved the Supreme Court cannot be trusted to pick a President.

Why should minorities like the Rethuglicans? The Rethuglicans have always seen minorities as usable and disposable, not really people at all. The chickens are coming home to roost. Break out the Bibles, but it won’t do any good. The Rethugs are toast.

  41. Glenn Herbert Says:

Steve Saller-you are one ignorant sonovabitch. Unless, of course, you live in the South, which would make you smarter than average. Still got all your teeth Steve? How’s that “right to work” thing workin’ for ya?

  42. Nadine Says:

They cling to their guns and bible, surely it can’t be the biblical principles of Jesus! Mind you, Jesus said there will be ‘FALSE PROPHETS” and Karl “Rogue” Rove expose that!

  43. Don Williams Says:

I would note that the people who run the Republican party ain’t all that much interested in the average White voter either — other than whether said commoner can be conned into being a useful idiot.

The Republican Party’s plutocratic financiers/owners are mainly interested in dividing/distracting the country along various issues/ethnic groups/etc –”divide and conquer” — so no one will notice that the plutocrats grab most of the national income and possess most of the national wealth while they dodge military service, raid the US Treasury, write laws to protect their interests, commit various crimes and generally fuck the country while paying as little taxes as possible.

  44. Tom Says:

All this tells me is that the GOP as it currently exists is incapable of change, incapable of handling reality and committed to ideology. Current interests are too entrenched to change and its persistent racist, sexist and classist views make it a blight on America.

  45. Sonya Says:

I must be losing my mind. When i hear people whine about “oh the dem are taking over,Obama honeymoon over crap”, it galls me.Is it because he’s black he doesn’t get the respect he deserves as Commander-in-chief.We lived 8 years of a repuplican dominated house ,senate, and president. What did we get for our troubles ,well i’m already poor so,a free walk to the great drepression 2008 Style. The man’s been in office,as well as a lot of these elected officials ,barely over six months.I remember if you spoke out on Bush or any of his cabniet, you were un american, you hate are troops etc…. but talk about Pres.Obama, who from my point has tried to be bi-partisan,include not exclude,as well as trying to balance out a great economical meltdown to our country, thats ok.I judge Republicans by the actions of their party.which is aimed at white middle and upper class citizens. They single handed put themselves in that box. When Pres. Lincoln started that party i’m sure thats not what he had in mind.So boo -hoo republicans, its called losing. Enjoy the taste. We did for 8 years. My advice is to drink it slow.We still have 3 and a half years of obama and at this rate the democratic party.I wonder what would have happened to michael moore had he said ” I wish Bush would fail”.Hmmmm Makes me wonder.

As the expert on penis sizes, you win the argument. Bottoms up old chap.

  50. kate Says:

notorious PAT (#13)- how in hell do you come by your democrats:latinos::pimps:whores analogy? Pimps don’t promise goodies to whores, they beat them up if they don’t bring in enough money.

  51. Goldstein Says:

Sounds like the GOP may soon expand their competition with the Democrats. Maybe the GOP should propose a “Death to White America Day” or perhaps a “Celebrate Institutionalized Racism: as long as it’s affirmative action!” campaign? Personally, I hate racism and love diversity. Well, as long as I can live in my 98.6% white neighborhood and send my children to 97.3% white schools. Israel for Jews ONLY…diversity for Europe and the USA!

  52. Danny Says:

The question asked was how many people favorable opinion of the Republican party. Presumably if you added the number of people who have a favorable opinion of either party you’d get less than 100%, so support for the Republicans is probably a bit higher than this poll would indicate.

A look at the 2008 Exit Polls:
    http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/exit-polls.html
31% Hispanics voted McCain in the election (Asians 35%, Blacks 4%), so actually MY might have a point and Hispanic support for the Republicans may have indeed plummeted more than other races.

What I find incredible looking at the exit poll data is the sharp left-wing turn among Asians. Clinton lost the Asian vote twice (in 92 badly), but now the Asian vote is a bedrock of the Democratic coalition.

So what you have is the Republicans as the party of (the majority of) White Christians, and the Democrats the party of Fake Americans, aka Everyone Else.

  53. brublr Says:

The great French scientist and mathematican, Henri Poincaire, said “Science progresses funeral by funeral.” and so does common sense, but the pace of its progress is accelerating beyond the ability of the Republican party to internalize. This is is evident in it’s fulminations and ineptitude.

  54. mario Says:

I AM NOT SURPRISED AT ALL. I HEAR THE THING THEY SAY AND SEE WHAT THEY DO, THEY CARE ABOUT NOTHING BUT THE RNC AND THIER IDEOLOGY. AND THEIR RETURN TO POWER
IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO EXPLAIN THEIR BLANTANT IGNORING OF THE VERY REAL DESTRUCTION OF LIVES THAT THEIR IDEOLOGY, WHEN APPLIED ON MASS SCALE CREATES.

  55. AL Says:

The GOP response to judge Sotomayor continues to amaze me. When president Obama nominated her, it was obvious that she was going to be confirmed. And soon. The best (only) strategy for the Republicans was to sit quietly. Maybe make some dry asides on a couple of the more questionable cases.

    That’s it.

But then we see Newton Gingrich himself (who should know much, much better) fail to keep his opinions in check. What did he think he would accomplish? Did he hope to sway some Democratic Senators (yeah, Newt’s right…I better vote no…)

It reminded me of games Michael Jordan’s Bulls would win by freethrows. All the opppnent had to do to win was NOT FOUL. But they would. With 3 seconds to go they would foul Scottie, or Steve Kerr, or Michael himself. Swish x 2.

    Game over.

John McCain, who sponsored the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill, probably represents the ceiling of Hispanic support for Republicans.

Slightly OT: remember when Hispanics Won’t Vote For a Black Candidate? It was in between Black People Don’t Think Obama’s Really Black and White People Won’t Vote For a Black Candidate. Good times.

  61. Roger D. Says:

“Democrats are like pimps, which implies that Hispanics are like hookers.”

And they wonder why the Republicans are in such bad shape.

  62. E. Morse Says:

    mpowell

Are you so foolish as to believe that local government dominated by Repubs is any better? One party dominance of either party is undesirable and unhealthy. There are plenty examples of corruption and incompetence by members of both parties. Ideaologically speaking, I think there’s a reason so many of the Forbes “Best Places to Live in America” are run by Democratic or left-leaning cities. That sort of bursts your little local government theory doesn’t it?

The disastrous 8 years of “W” should be enough to give anyone reason enough not to support the Repubs.

  63. Clint J. Says:

I think some of this commentary is disgusting and vulgar, comparing ethnic groups to prostitutes and saying that penis size has something to do with political affilation.

Anyway, 15 years it seems like almost everybody I lived around was white and now allot of Latinos, blacks, asians and others have moved in. I guess most whites voted for McCain but Obama won because he won the minority voting blocks overwhelmingly while no more whites then what the Dems usually get.

Interesting demographics, some people think that whites will be the minortiy by 2050 and I can think it is possible.

  64. Clint J. Says:

Danny, that’s disgusting, nobody is a “fake” American.

  65. W Says:

I would like to see this chart “normalized” for each group. These groups are different sizes (more whites than non-whites).

If there are 90 voting whites and 10 voting blacks, then getting or losing all of the black votes only impacts the overall election by a swing of 10%. Anyone can afford to lose the black vote if they have the majority of the white vote. If all the non-white votes equals 50% of the total vote, then you’ve really got something.

    Go Democracy!

    Buzzard luck.

A very clear sign of a political party devoid of ideas or solutions!

  69. Leslie Says:

This is because non-Whites don’t believe that the GOP is for minorities in ANY way. They don’t want to help minorities. They don’t want minorities to have the ‘best things in life.’ It’s been like that for years.

  70. Flores de la Hoz Says:

I voted GOP from 1992 – 2004. Hispanic Americans gave the GOP the White House in 2000 and 2004. All that the Bush family did for GOP in attracting Hispanic Americans has been for naught since 2005. The GOP had the Hispanic American vote in its pocket. The GOP got over 50% of Florida’s Puerto Rican vote in 2004. Now mind you, that Puerto Ricans historically voted Democrat.

Murdoch and Limbaugh have critically wounded the GOP. Trancredo and Buchanan make great entertainment but they continue to harm the GOP image. Even conservative Cuban Americans have had it with the nut wing of the GOP.

Now it is up to our Mexican American cousins to deliver Texas in 2012 and thereby knocking out the GOP. Si se puede!

    3) Unable to get into the whole lonesome cowboy mythos

which pretty much leaves the GOP up shit creek and out of bullets. Especially where #2 is concerned — the previous administration has done nothing to improve America’s image. Youngsters and recent immigrants alike think we have a lot to apologize for. Meanwhile, the GOP is diving deeper into its “my white, Christian country — wrong or right” base.

  80. david in norcal Says:

Why would nonwhites think the Republicans are somehow harmful?

    Oh yeah, just paying attention.

  81. Denis Says:

Don’t get too cocky. Look at the New England Pats 18-1. The underdogs will always win at some point. Being cocky always bites you in the backside. Keep it up…20 Jan.’13 B.O.’s last day!!!!!!! Look At the Dem party now, how much further left can they get before being on the right?

  82. Brian Griffin Says:

I just can’t believe their favorability rating among whites is that high.

  83. Bloodstar » Diagram of the Republican Death Spiral Says:

[...] Via Sullivan Yglesias made this graph: [...]

  84. ben g Says:

The Steve Sailer above is fake. Those who believe otherwise are being trolled.

And Matt Yglesias, you need to fix up your comment moderation.

  85. Davy Says:

The entire country moved substantially right since Johnson. Possibly a good thing. But “right” now seems to be homophobic evangelical fascism … there is no good “conservative” party in the Burkean mode. Libertarians? don’t believe in economic realities. Unions have been vastly weakened (possibly a good thing too) but dems seem to be union/teacher supporting with their own set of cronyisms. Country is devolving rather badly into the Goldman Sachs set of looters, backstopped by the new serfdom, i.e. us taxpayers. Dereg is not a Dem/Rep issue – the worst deregs were under Clinton/Rubin, repealing Glass-Steagall and sneaking through the “commodity futures modernization act” preventing any oversight of the shadow banking system.

May not be hopeless, but Obama is not living up to expectorations. Pansy backing away from a Torture truth commission, bailing out Goldman

  86. James Says:

And ben g continues to be a bitch for sailer, as he used to do on Douthat’s old blog.

  87. dankil Says:

Anyone who has ever visited Steve’s blog site knows that the ignorant troll who is impersonating him is a fake. I would recommend that you visit his site, but most of you are too fucking dumb to understand anything discussed there.

  88. Steve Sailer Says:

There certainly are a lot of dumb commenters around here, judging by how many fell for those obviously fake “Steve Sailer” comments.

    The real Steve Sailer

  89. Chi Says:

“Latino support for the Republican Party dropping like a stone, perhaps due to the racist attacks on Sonia Sotomayor from many prominent conservative commentators:”

    Matt,

What racist attacks? Haven’t people been pointing out that Sotomayer seems to be pushing a racist agenda herself? She is actively promoting her own racial group.

You seem to overlook the fact that if whites did this they would be called racist.

Ultimately the two groups that are most ethnocentric, blacks and Hispanics will battle it out for control of the Democractic party.

  90. Phil Rushton Says:

    Steve Sailer isn’t circumcised.

  91. Mark Says:

What’s amazing is that all the people in this thread posting blatantly hate-filled comments about “white people” and especially “white men” don’t even realize how racist they are.

Any white person who votes for the blatantly anti-white Democrats is tying their own noose. That’s the real stupidity of white people. I’m planning my move to a nice island nation while this country continues its Soviet death spiral accelerated by the flood of third-world immigrants.

  92. Joey Tranchina Says:

You don’t have to be a person of color to find the current gaggle of GOP embarrassments to be deficient in intellect, character, commitment to the welfare of the American people and comprehension of sound public policy.

They have virtually no virtues including the conservative virtues upon which they trade and about which they blather. In the wake of the tsunami of George W. Bush’s incompetence and irresponsibility, the Republican Party needs answers not more ideology.

Watching this fawning, sniveling and raving batch of third-rate back-benchers make a mockery of their role as loyal-opposition, it is hard to imagine a useful future for any one of them. This is the dregs of two generations of interesting politicians. It’s bad enough to imagine Bill Buckley and Barry Goldwater puking in their coffins at this foetid class of torch-bearers for conservative ideals, without having to listen to these losers grovel and apologize to a bigoted, illogical and ignorant buffoon with a golden microphone.

This animal house of political classes is so disgustingly not-up-to the-challenge facing our nation, that I have only one question: Why aren’t more white people smart enough to figure this out?

  93. stari_momak Says:

The middle of the 20th century, when Democrats dominated, was a horrible time. Our country wasn’t able to overcome any challenges, or improve anyone’s quality of life, or extend anyone’s civil rights.

It was also the time of very restrictive immigration policy and a 85% + European descended population. We can pretty well track the US’s decline with the fall in the percentage of white population and the increase in immigrants and their immediate offspring. And contrary to what you all may think, the GOP policy for the last decade and a half — particularly that of Rove and Bush II — has been to increase immigration by any means necessary.

  94. Racism ain’t dead (especially in the right-wing) « The Tree Hugging Liberal Says:
