I’ve never been to Auschwitz. I did, however, visit the lesser-known Terezín concentration camp back in 1997. The experience didn’t inspire me to Twitter a bunch of cheap partisan political attacks. But, hey, I’m not Newt Gingrich. He went and tweeted:
Auschwitz is a horrifying experience which reminded me of thee vil of kim jong I’ll and dangers of al qaeda hamas and hezbollah
And:
Auschwitz is also a reminder that evil men often do what they threaten. An iranian nuclear bomb could lead to a second holocaust
Another fellow named Josh Daws took the bait:
@newtgingrich Silly Newt. Don’t you know that by talking to them they’ll put down their weapons and participate in giant group hug.
And Newt tweeted back:
@JoshDaws I knew you would understand. Chamberlain tried the group hug with hitler and it didn’t work
Haha, dumb liberals. I know this chest-pounding about Iran is supposed to help get more Jewish support, but I think normal Jewish people (or, indeed, normal people of all backgrounds) are going to find this choice of venue a bit distasteful.

OK–Now explain to me–just what is Twitter good for?
May 29th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Auschwitz is a horrifying experience which reminded me of thee vil of kim jong I’ll and dangers of al qaeda hamas and hezbollah
Given that Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah all want to wipe Isreal off the map, I can actually see where a visit to Auschwitz would remind one of the threat they pose.
Also, how is this a partisan political attack? Its not like Democrats are pro-Hamas or anything.
May 29th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Keep in mind that right after tweeting from Auschwitz, he proceeded to call Sotomayor a racist. Classy!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
You stay classy, GOP.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Has Newt ever written anything to suggest that he’s one of those “Auschwitz good, ’cause it pushed the Jews to Israel for their eventual mass destruction/conversion?”
May 29th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
For every Hitler who actually did the evil things he threatened, there were thousands of blowhards who did nothing but make noise. One of the reasons that the Holocaust was so shocking was precisely that the rhetoric was so ancient, but no one thought Hitler would really take it seriously. The default assumption is still that people who do nothing but babble hate should usually be ignored, unless the threat is truly imminent.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
Where the fuck was the USA on September 30th, 1938?
May 29th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Tasteless, yes, but this is the main Zionist modus operandi. That’s what they do, day in and day out. Why complain about one minor incident?
May 29th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
That’s some epic Yglesian spelling from Newtster. Twitter may not make people dumber, but it can be quite revealling: http://twitter.com/HowardKurtz/status/1955210998. (Howie — to you, it’s Judge Sotomayor, not Sonia; and and “bitchy,” really?)
May 29th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Newt Gingrich is the guy who said, after Susan Smith strapped her three kids into the car, drove into a lake, and then bailed out, that Democrats had caused her to do that.
All class, that guy. You’d never guess he had his wife served with divorce papers in the hospital where she was recovering from chemo.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I went to Dachau. Even though Tweeting wasn’t available then, the last thing I wanted to do was broadcast the darkness of man’s inhumanity to man.
I can’t wait until Newt visits Dresden and tweets from there. Dresden is the city with no military targets that the Allies firebombed as the war drew to a close, kind of like Israel dropping millions of cluster bombs in Lebanon as it prepared to withdraw.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Newt went to Auschwitz for the same reason other people go to Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Gingrich twats:
“Auschwitz is a horrifying experience which reminded me of thee vil of kim jong I’ll and dangers of al qaeda hamas and hezbollah”
Hezbollah is in talks with the IMF right now. It looks like they’ll win the coming election, but the other anti-Iranian coalition will still have a minority-blocking position.
“BEIRUT, Lebanon — Hezbollah, the Shiite militant group, has talked with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union about continued financial support to Lebanon in the event the group’s political alliance wins the June 7 parliamentary elections, Hezbollah officials said Wednesday.
The talks this month reflected concerns here about a possible drop in international donor and investor confidence should the political alliance led by Hezbollah — considered a terrorist group by the United States and Israel — gain a majority for the first time. Many analysts believe that outcome is likely, though the race is considered too close to call.
Lebanon’s current governing majority, which has tried unsuccessfully to disarm Hezbollah, has depended on heavy financial support from the West and oil-rich Persian Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia. In Beirut last week, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said future American support to Lebanon, which includes military aid, would depend on the elections’ outcome.”

Newt went to Auschwitz for the same reason other people go to the Mall of America.

Twitter wasn’t invented in 1997! Oh, burn!
May 29th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
“Twitter wasn’t invented in 1997! Oh, burn!”
Little-known fact: Twitter was invented by an Auschwitz tourist who wanted to share his thoughts on the MIddle East with the entire world but lacked a good way of doing so.

Jizzrael is digging her grave by not listening to the world community and consistently violating international law.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to support a country in which apartheid and genocide is acceptable.
Netanyahu will bring the end to the state of Jizzrael as we know it.
In the meantime, Gingrich should kindly go fist fuck himself.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
@Tim:
Jizzrael
Fuck off.
May 29th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Auschwitz took place in the context of a World War that also resulted in 27 million Russian dead. World war provides cover for a lot of additional atrocities. Hezbollah and Iran don’t really have that much going on.
May 29th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Let’s be precise here. Newt and his buttkissing entourage are not proposing to wander onto the field of battle and fight evil THEMSELVES.
Rather, they want to sacrifice other people’s children for their cause. Preferably blue collar, Democratic people’s children.
And their cause is not defense of the USA or of Israel. The cause is to suck the cocks of certain billionaires in the expectation of receiving some funds of personal benefit to themselves.
May 29th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I thought Newt was newly Catholic. That skullcap on his head–I assume that’s what you do there but I can’t help but think that he just converted to Lubavich Judaism.
May 29th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
“And their cause is not defense of the USA or of Israel. The cause is to suck the cocks of certain billionaires in the expectation of receiving some funds of personal benefit to themselves.”
You mean like Haim Saban? You’re much to smart to think GOP dickheads like Newt don’t have counterparts on the other side of GOPocratic sewer.
May 29th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Newt is illiterate?
May 29th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
“Given that Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah all want to wipe Isreal off the map, I can actually see where a visit to Auschwitz would remind one of the threat they pose.”
Oh, shut up.

Re Kafka at 22: “You mean like Haim Saban? You’re much to smart to think GOP dickheads like Newt don’t have counterparts on the other side of GOPocratic sewer.”
————–
Of course– the Clintons, for example.
Newt is raising money for his Presidential bid by pandering to Sheldon Adelson, not to Haim Saban. Although he would be happy to go down on Haim as well, I’m sure.

How many US soldiers are dead from this shit — over 4500?
And thousands more crippled for life.
May 29th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
“How many US soldiers are dead from this shit — over 4500?
And thousands more crippled for life.”
You’d have to go back to the Vietnam War to find such a criminal waste of good young lives, snuffed out before their time. God I hate us being over there. The only satisfaction I find in this is that I was against this bullshit BEFORE it ever started. I know b.s. when I hear it. If Obama doesn’t end this soon he can kiss my ass.
May 29th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Newt went to Auschwitz for the same reason other people go to Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
…to gain super-powers?
May 29th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
@ James F. Elliott
You don’t have to an insufferable prick to disagree with other people.
I am being charitable calling that country Jizzrael.
May 29th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
Wow – what a trite, shallow man Newt is. And they’ve been pushing him as a “genius” for years.
May 29th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
@James F. Elliott
Hear hear.
May 30th, 2009 at 1:00 am
No need to go to Auschwitz, Matt. Look around. Auschwitz is who were are.
Next time your are struggling to discern if someone close is a friend, to be truly trusted, ask yourself, if given the option, would this person choose to be a camp guard or a martyr.
If you meet ten martyrs on your journey, and can conclude that you too belong in this category, consider yourself a lucky man.

Blowback writes:
According to On This Day in History, that was when the Munich Pact was signed, appeasing Hitler by handing him the Sudetenland. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain thought it would bring “peace for our time.” Hitler invaded Poland less than a year later.
The USA was not a signatory. So what’s your point, blowback?
May 30th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
It turned out that Chamberlain bought England valuable time with which to make Hurricanes and Spitfires that came in handy in the summer of 1940.
May 30th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Would like to see Newt wake up in Gaza looking for some rach munis as he prattles on about Auchswitz.
May 30th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
“Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said future American support to Lebanon, which includes military aid, would depend on the elections’ outcome.”
Meaning, “We didn’t like Hamas winning, so we fucked over the Palestinians, now we won’t like Hizballah winning, so we’ll fuck over the Lebanese.”
Class act, Obama – just like Bush.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
“Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said future American support to Lebanon, which includes military aid, would depend on the elections’ outcome.”
Nothing taste better for good ole Joe than rimming AIPAC guys. Obama? he is in rush to prove to “Jewish voter” that he can take it up the ass deeper and faster than the previous admins. Look who he’s appointed as the COS? Emanuel is a certified thug.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
You don’t have to an insufferable prick to disagree with other people.
Said the guy who just called Israel “Jizzrael”.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:10 am
Anthony, critical thinking is not your cup of tea is it? I wasn’t disagreeing with anyone. I was being EXTREMELY charitable calling that shithole Jizzrael.
May 31st, 2009 at 5:33 am
Would like to see Newt wake up in Gaza looking for some rach munis as he prattles on about Auchswitz.
Right, it would also be interesting if he could find himself in Camp 1391, being deemed ethnically undesirable, and for that reason dangerous.
