Limbaugh v. Gingrich

One thing to note about the latest spat between Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh is that I’ll bet you Newt doesn’t apologize. His conservative credentials aren’t really in doubt, and I think he’s shrewd enough to see how absurd the apologies other conservative politicians have offered make them look. Consequently, Newt—whose ideas are every bit as stupid as Rush’s—will come out of this possessing an entirely undeserved veneer of reasonableness.

Preaching to the choir here? Calling Newt stupid will go down well with the base… it is the Limbaughesque thing to do. I’d rather do the Obamaesque thing and defeat Newt using more sophisticated weapons.

  2. SH Says:

Don’t you think this is why Palin has kept her piehole shut about this? I think she wants to come across as more moderate & try to appeal to the more moderate Rs & Is.

possessing an entirely undeserved veneer of reasonableness

Pretty much describe’s Newt’s entire career.

  4. msw Says:

Newt’s a Hannity man all the way.

  5. Rob Says:

Newt just has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He has no office, he has no real hope of getting office, all he has to gain is a non-elected GOP position and if he becomes the Republican counterpoint to Rush, that will surely help book sales.

  6. ET Says:

    Ditto what Rob says.

The others apologized because the jobs and money for re-election would have been hurt and they knew it. Not to mention Gingrich’s ego is huge enough to get him though any “difficulty” Rush is going to try and hurl in his direction.

  7. Bragan Says:

All the internecine feuding and jockeying for position among the GOP and “conservatives,” doesn’t it make you long for a Crossfire Deathmatch? Last man/cretin standing. Or maybe in keeping with March Madness, we could set up an 16 slot bracket?

Gingrich v. Limbaugh (bloviating fatso division)
Jindal v. Palin (overrated non-white guy division)
    Huckabee v. Romney (rematch division
    McCain v. himself (cranky division)
Michael Steele v. Joe the Plumber (populist fool division)

Bill Kristol v. Charles Krauthammer (neocon division)
Karl Rove v. Michael Gerson (Dubya propagandists division)

  8. Jinchi Says:

I think you missed part of the debate. Rush essentially has effectively pushed Newt not to apologize:

“I mean, next week Newt could come out and profess his total admiration and love for me if it would serve his purposes”

So now, Newt will be branded an opportunist if he calls Rush’s show. So he won’t. But now, Newt can’t claim that he won’t be bullied by Rush Limbaugh, since Limbaugh has given him no opportunity to kiss the ring.
