Bachmann Introducing Bill to Ban Use of Made-Up Global Currency

The madness continues as Michele Bachmann introduces legislation that “would bar the dollar from being replaced by any foreign currency.”

What the Chinese were proposing, of course, was to replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. I would take the view that a move away from near-exclusive reliance on the dollar is probably inevitable irrespective of what we do. But whether or not you agree with me about that, this isn’t something congress can ban—it’s a decision by foreign countries about what they do with their reserves.

Update In response to an inquiry from Greg Sargent, a Bachmann spokesperson clarifies that Bachmann understands she can't legislate foreign countries' behavior and that "This legislation would ensure that the U.S. dollar remain the currency of the United States." But nobody -- not Russia not China not Tim Geithner -- has ever proposed changing this.

More evidence that Representative Bachmann is a moron. News at 11.

  2. onceler Says:

hilarious. priceless. this harpy is a god damn laugh machine! get her on Colbert, like, yesterday

  3. DAS Says:

I love how the so-called liberal media are reporting on this bill as if it actually makes any sense at all. Meanwhile if a DFH were to say anything left of center (where center gets to be defined by positions that are an exact, arithmetic mean between those of the Brookings Institute and the AEI), they are immediately branded “deeply unserious”.

  4. joe from Lowell Says:

This woman is awesome. I hope they keep her around.

  5. Colonel Danite Says:

I just watched the video Matt posted of Bachman asking Bernacke and Geitner (I think) whether they would categorically oppose replacing the dollar with an international currency. I can’t believe that they actually responded to her request instead of just calling her a moron right there and on the record.

  6. Ted Says:

What I love about Michelle Bachman is the light that burns somewhere deep within her eyes. An eerie, unwavering flame that tells you she deeply and passionately believes the utter nonsense coming out of her mouth.

Her eyes tell me that in a former life she organized doomed children’s crusades and burned heretics by the gross.

And yet this zealous flame is imprisoned in the body of a suburban, would-be-folksy Minnesotan. It’s that contrast, I think, that makes her so hypnotic.

  7. AHG Says:

    Too stupid to breathe.

  8. JT Says:

Bachmann’s proposed legislation would be bizarre if we hadn’t the example of the Euro, if Geithner had not broadly agreed with the Chinese while making clear he wasn’t exactly sure what he was agreeing on, and if Obama had not been his usual CYA “thoughtful” lecturer in chief who leaves things open to interpretation. Oh and then after the dollar fell Geithner disavowed his earlier comments. That really inspires confidence!
As it is Bachmann is simply indulging in a bit of right wing nutbutter not really different from the left wing nutbutter of the past eight years.
Given that Obama and Geithner have vastly more power than Bachmann I’m far more concerned by their sowing confusion than Bachmann trolling for votes and a bit of media.
Must be a slow outrage Thursday huh Matt?

  9. mars Says:

Bachmann for SecTreas!!!!!! Oh, teh awesome!!!

  10. Led Says:

I’m in favor of Palin-Bachmann in 2012. Double down on crazy, uninformed and kinda hot. Call it the Starbursts Ticket.

Ted: Good call on the “light that burns somewhere deep within her eyes.” It reminds me of Charles Manson.

  11. neff Says:

Since when have the Bachmann types recognized the sovereignty of other countries anyway?

  12. Seitz Says:

As it is Bachmann is simply indulging in a bit of right wing nutbutter not really different from the left wing nutbutter of the past eight years.

    Like, for example……?

All I can think of is the draft, which was just one guy trying to make a point.

  13. Stephen Says:

Good post. Bit jus to correct a minor point, China has lots of other currency as well. If this BBC article is correct about 65% of China’s reserve is in US Dollars.

  14. OMG Says:

Just more evidence in my argument that Republicans are the New Freaks. The hippies are long gone and the freaks are now on the right. The problem is that they’re not on drugs, which is much worse. They’re on Teh Stupid.

  15. Tancredi Says:

Um, JT, how do you propose that we should have outlawed the establishment of the Euro?

  16. Luke Says:

Where in the Declaration of Independence does it say that Michelle Bachmann has the power to do this?

Where, in that sacrosanct document, written by George Washington himself, does it say “Rock on with the crazy, sistah!”

  17. joe from Lowell Says:

It’s hilarious that Matthew and the rest of the JournoList is still trying to assert that this is some made up right wing Drude/Fox fakery, when Tax Cheat Timmeh himself agreed that it made sense yesterday

Tim Geithner agreed that replacing the dollar with an international currency as American legal tender was a good idea?

    You sure about that, Al?

You’re determined to make yourself look like an idiot, aren’t you?

Or am I giving you too much credit, and you really don’t understand the difference between China using other currencies for their reserves, and the United States replacing the dollar as our legal tender?

  18. Francisco The Man Says:

I’m pretty sure that was fake Al. And this new troll JT seems willing to eat any shit sandwich the wingnuts offer up. Michelle Bachmann says something crazy that totally reveals her stupidity? To the ramparts! Every blithering display of ignorance must be defended!

  19. joe from Lowell Says:

I miss the old Al, who used to update us daily on the effect the Obama administration was having on the stock markets.

  20. Njorl Says:

    Shorter Al:

Matthew continues to insist that the sky is not orange despite the fact that the grass is clearly green.

  21. DJ Says:

Tim Geithner agreed that replacing the dollar with an international currency as American legal tender was a good idea?

    You sure about that, Al?

That can’t be the “real” Al, can it? The real Al surely understands the difference between countries replacing the dollar as reserve currency and the US doing away with the dollar.

So why pretend to be this stupid on a left-wing blog? Is it some kinda paying-your-dues thing for wingers where you deliberately act dumb-as-bricks in front of hostile audiences, just to toughen you up?

  22. Davis X. Machina Says:

Since when have the Bachmann types recognized the sovereignty of other countries anyway?

    /Chuck Norris

There are no other countries, there are just places that aren’t states — yet.

    /Chuck Norris

  23. JT Says:

    Seitz @ 14
Oh, how’s bout google “9-11 conspiracy”.
    Then “Bush debate cheat”
Then… well it just goes on and on.

    Tancredi @ 18
Jeez, what the fuck is your GPA? Or did you ever have one?
The Euro is an example of a “universal” currency supplanting national currencies and the resultant difficulties.
No we aren’t a member of the European Union.
I fail to see that I or Bachmann said we are.
Perhaps you will be kind enough to provide a citation?
And of course we have our own hemisphere’s integration efforts.

  24. Th Says:

Didn’t we used to have an international reserve currency called gold? Maybe Bachmann and Ron Paul can have a debate. Matt can host.

  25. JT Says:

Francisco the Weaney @ 21 says:
Every blithering display of ignorance must be defended!

Well, no, and definitely not yours.

  26. joe from Lowell Says:

Al is demonstrating the final step in partisan hackdom.

He doesn’t just believe whatever someone like Michelle Bachmann dishes out.

He goes farther, and actually makes himself not know things that Michelle Bachmann doesn’t know.

  27. David Says:

It’s hilarious that Matthew and the rest of the JournoList is still trying to assert that this is some made up right wing Drude/Fox fakery, when Tax Cheat Timmeh himself agreed that it made sense yesterday – a position with which he had to quickly disavow.

It’s like Matthew and the other JournoListers don’t even seem to acknowledge reality

Man, are you stupid. You and your ilk are the ones denying reality. From the IMF:

    “Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)

The SDR is an international reserve asset, created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement the existing official reserves of member countries. SDRs are allocated to member countries in proportion to their IMF quotas. The SDR also serves as the unit of account of the IMF and some other international organizations. Its value is based on a basket of key international currencies.”

I really wish Matt would do more to explain all of this. I find these posts kind of unhelpful. Geither, having worked at the IMF, actually knows what he is talking about, which, apparently is a problem for some people. And the allusions to the Euro are ridiculous. This is not the same thing. Not at all. Jesus.

  28. joe from Lowell Says:

Tell the truth, Al: you saw the words “global reserve currency,” didn’t know what that meant, and remembered something you read in the Left Behind books.

    Amirite?

  29. Seitz Says:

    Seitz @ 14
Oh, how’s bout google “9-11 conspiracy”.
    Then “Bush debate cheat”
Then… well it just goes on and on.

And surely you can point to links where Democratic Congressmen drafted and submitted bills regarding these ‘issues’, right? Or you can show where Democratic Congressmen were at the forefront of pushing these theories, right? Because I think the point is that Democratic nutters typically don’t get elected.

Sheehs, JT, you really are a fucking moron, aren’t you?

  30. agum Says:

Oh, how’s bout google “9-11 conspiracy”.

All the 9-11 conspiracy talk I see on the Internet (and hear offline) comes from liberta-right-wing Paultards.

  31. 24AheadDotCom Says:

In keeping with MattY’s thoughts, here’s a funny video about Bachmann!

  32. DAS Says:

We apologize for interrupting this thread for the following lefty correction:

Geither, having worked at the IMF, actually knows what he is talking about is part of the problem.

And now back to your regularly scheduled bashing of teh stupid

  33. DAS Says:

oops strike doesn’t work here … but I reckon you get the idea …

  34. ET Says:

Here constituents still have almost 2 years of her representing them left. I would feel sorry for them but I don’t. They had a chance to get rid of her in November and they didn’t. Now they have to live with this utter embarrassment representing them.

  35. eric Says:

FYI, Michelle Bachman is also working on legislation that “will officially define breasts as body parts of female American citizens.”

  36. Paulie Carbone Says:

Bachmann is a lolcow. I think she should investigate anti-american activities among foreign governments. I’d still spray some nuttbutter on her face though.

  37. Jon Says:

I hope she’ll also propose a bill outlawing zombies, walking skeletons, and dark closets that aren’t closed all the way at bedtime.

  38. Hogan Says:

So how does this work? This law passes, and then a future Congress can’t take us off the dollar because, what, they find themselves unable to repeal the Bachmann Act? Is this like God making a sandwich so big that He Himself can’t eat it?

  39. Trollhattan Says:

    Shorter Bachman:

We’ll surrender the You Ess Dollar the day they pry the Fairness Doctrine from my stiff little fingers with their human-animal gay clones. Why do you refuse to answer my question, sir?

  40. Pedro Says:

    Ted:

Her eyes tell me that in a former life she organized doomed children’s crusades and burned heretics by the gross.

And yet this zealous flame is imprisoned in the body of a suburban, would-be-folksy Minnesotan. It’s that contrast, I think, that makes her so hypnotic.

She’s a force of nature that’s for certain. And you underestimate her at your own peril.

  41. Snowman Says:

I can’t believe that they actually responded to her request instead of just calling her a moron right there and on the record.

The look in Bernanke’s face right after his one word “yes” to Bachmann’s question was awesome. It conveyed such utter, deserved contempt. Too bad that does not end up on the typed transcript!

I live in the same state as Madame Bachmann – I can’t decide if that is a massige boon to hilarity, or a tragic sign of the decent from Midwestern sober leadership.

The Strib had some fun today at the Bloghouse

  42. Everyone Says:

    Shut the fuck up, Lonewacko.

  43. pseudonymous in nc Says:

you underestimate her at your own peril.

I sort of agree with this, only to the point that I’d rephrase it this way:

“You refrain from calling her a batshit lunatic who needs to be shipped off to the nearest mental ward at your own peril.” Tolerating malevolently crazy people is a bad idea, and I think it’s clear that Bachmann has the zealot’s psychosis rather than being a calculated outrage troll.

  44. Rob Mac Says:

Pedro’s comment reminds me of what was often said by Palin supporters during the election. Sure, Palin’s still governor of Alaska and Bachman’s still a Rep, but I don’t think anyone is underestimating either of them. What is the obsession Republicans have with claiming their stupidest politicians are closet geniuses?

You don’t exactly have hordes of Democrats mocking Republicans for underestimating Mike Gravel and Cynthia McKinney.

  45. joe from Lowell Says:

Her eyes tell me that in a former life she organized doomed children’s crusades and burned heretics by the gross.

And yet this zealous flame is imprisoned in the body of a suburban, would-be-folksy Minnesotan. It’s that contrast, I think, that makes her so hypnotic.

She’s a force of nature that’s for certain. And you underestimate her at your own peril.”

I’ll bet she’s a tiger in the sack, too.

  46. Adam Says:

“So how does this work? This law passes, and then a future Congress can’t take us off the dollar because, what, they find themselves unable to repeal the Bachmann Act? Is this like God making a sandwich so big that He Himself can’t eat it?”

No, you don’t understand. The constitution clearly states that the legislative branch makes laws and then the executive branch enforces them. So, if she passes this law, we could never go off the dollar, because that would be unconstitutional. It says so right there in the document.

Hopefully she can find those anti-American members of Congress she keeps talking about so we can get this important legislation passed. Otherwise we might be on our way to the end times with a global currency, and that would lead to Christ returning and taking his followers to heaven. And no Republican wants that.

  47. Ricky Bobby Says:

Bachman Wingnut Overdrive is the best thing to happen to the Democratic party since Obama.

BTW, her whole thing is a dogwhistle for the far right fans of the “Left Behind” series. What she’s actually asking is whether or not our lawmakers support a New World Order with the Antichrist at its head.

    I think she’s awesome.

  48. Dave Radetsky Says:

Obviously we can’t legislate what other countries do. But abandoning our own, independent currency will be the beginning of the end for the U.S. and if someone would propose a bill that would ban the chance of that happening it would be a good idea.

  49. Ted Says:

What she’s actually asking is whether or not our lawmakers support a New World Order with the Antichrist at its head.

Oh. Why didn’t she just say that?

    Of course they support that.

  50. David Says:

But abandoning our own, independent currency will be the beginning of the end for the U.S. and if someone would propose a bill that would ban the chance of that happening it would be a good idea.

Nobody is proposing that. Nobody. This bill is what you call a distraction and it shows how deeply unserious Michelle Bachmann is.

  51. doodah Says:

To all liberals: The way you feel about bachmann is exactly the same way conservatives feel about Obama. You’re confused, and absolutely dumbfounded on how someone that stupid ever got elected to their position. Furthermore, they say these outrageous things that don’t make any sense and yet all of their followers, that you can call mindless robotic cronies, still believe every word that comes out of their stuttering mouth. Where’s michelle’s teleprompter when she needs it. Damn her for speaking her mind!! Hey libs, do you really think that the left will stop at a reserve currency? Bit by bit, this country is getting a huge political and economic facelift. When you lose your internet jobs you or you finally graduate college, you might realize what this conservative movement is all about? Hey, isn’t stephen colbert on right now, he might laugh you into thinking the same way he does.

  52. David Says:

Also, I’d be interested to know Bachmann’s views on the Gold Standard, because if she supports it, then, in effect, she would be giving up American sovereignty over the Dollar.

  53. clb72 Says:

I hope she can cite the provision of the Constitution that allows her to do this. Apparently that’s very important to her.

  54. joe from Lowell Says:

To all liberals: The way you feel about bachmann is exactly the same way conservatives feel about Obama.

    How embarrassing for you.

  55. pseudonymous in nc Says:

I’m sure Dave Radetsky will also support bills banning alien invaders from the outer galaxies from landing their battle cruisers on US soil.

  56. doodah Says:

Where in the constitution does it say that government is allowed to target and tax specific people. AIG executive’s anyone? Attack!!

  57. doodah Says:

Joe, It’s even more embarrassing for you. He’s the president.

  58. joe from Lowell Says:

When alien battle cruisers of outlawed, only outlaws with have battle cruisers.

    Alien outlaws. Think about it.

  59. joe from Lowell Says:

Joe, It’s even more embarrassing for you. He’s the president.

You mean, he won a national election with a majority of the vote, and a huge electoral landslide? Is wildly popular across the country? Consistently tops Most Admired lists?

I don’t think it’s remotely embarrassing to have such a person leading your political movement. I can only imagine what it must be like to look at Michelle Bachman – long may she rant – and realize she’s getting press coverage.

  60. David Says:

I’m sure Dave Radetsky will also support bills banning alien invaders from the outer galaxies from landing their battle cruisers on US soil.

Hey don’t laugh that is a serious issue!

  61. doodah Says:

Joe, he’s embarrassed you already in the first 2 months! Lying about not allowing pork barrell spending on national t.v. Oops, that doesn’t matter. This whole AIG mess. Joe, 2 months. I can’t wait to see what the next 46 months bring. You guys think that because he won the election that he is the greatest president ever already without even earning. Your blind loyalty disgusts me. At least I knew what we were getting when he won, you obvioulsy did not.

fyi, anyone who represented the democratic ticket would’ve won. It was your time and the swing in the pendulum. Once america gets sick of the socialist party and the growth of government and the power they have over the people, we will vote in a republican. That’s just the way it works. The question is, can we afford to wait that long.

  62. joe from Lowell Says:

He must be doing something right, doodah.

He kicks your guys’ asses every time they stick their heads up.

No, no, seriously, I’m humiliated – deeply – to be aligned with President Obama. If only Michelle Bachman, Michael Steele, and Eric Cantor were the public face of my political party.

    Sigh. Poor me.

  63. doodah Says:

By the way, what’s wrong with looking at Michelle Bachmann? Please don’t start with media coverage, the liberals take the cake. If i see Pelosi, or Reid anymore on t.v. I might just throw up all over my moveon.org t-shirt. If the t.v. would ever pan up a couple of feet above Obama while speaking you would see axelrod, Reid, and Pelosi pulling on his marinette strings. Obama might be the face, but he’s not really the president. Question is, who is the puppet master. Hey for april fools, let’s shut down the teleprompter. I miss hearing obamas stuttering. uh…uh…um…Let me be clear!

  64. JM Says:

Once america gets sick of the socialist [sic] party …

I think I see the root of doodah’s problem, here.

  65. doodah Says:

There you liberals go again. It’s all about surface with you. I thought bachmann and palin were the face of our political party. I don’t mind looking at them. If you have a problem with them, I don’t think that a playboy magazine will even help you.

Let’s get serious though. It’s about our ideals, principles and morals that are deep within the party. Im talking about the people. Conservatives stick to their principles. Liberals will do anything to get votes. Hey there’s a group over there that’s not being represented. What, they’re illegal? I don’t care, they represent millions of votes, lets go get em. Whatever it takes for a power grab. You’re happy with that philosophy joe? Seriously?

  66. JM Says:

Let’s get serious though. It’s about our ideals, principles and morals that are deep within the party. Im talking about the people. Conservatives stick to their principles.

Serious FAIL. Conservatives talk about smaller, cheaper, less invasive government. Then, they do exactly the opposite. Why should I care about conservatives’ principles if conservatives don’t care about conservatives’ principles?

Hey there’s a group over there that’s not being represented. What, they’re illegal? I don’t care, they represent millions of votes, lets go get em. Whatever it takes for a power grab. You’re happy with that philosophy joe? Seriously?

That’s right. Millions of people illegally cast votes in this country. Yes, we’re so proud. It’s quite the accomplishment.

Doodah should be happy than an ignorant hick like doodah can actually vote in this country.

  67. doodah Says:

I think I see the root of doodah’s problem, here.

R u denying that Obama isn’t a socialist? Governement takeover of companies that stems from a financial crisis caused by liberals on the comittee of banking, housing, and urban affairs. Nationalized health care, nationalized everything. Governement control over everything. Stimulus bills that don’t work but just increase spending and raise your taxes. How is that not socialist?

Listen up liberals. Those professors that taught you in college have an agenda. Unfortunately, you have to be a very strong individual to think for yourself and not just take everything in as truth. Remember, those who teach, usually cant do, teach.

  68. xero Says:

    “Conservatives stick to their principles”:

No conservatives shout a set of principles, and then “govern” contrary to them. Unless, of course, torture, shredding the constitution, theft from the middle class to make the top 1% wealthier, and neofascism are your principles.

  69. doodah Says:

JM, you are right. A lot of the time the republicans didn’t practice what they preach. They grew government over the last eight years. Partially due to 9/11 and the war, but that doesn’t matter, honestly. They grew government and I am ashamed. As a conservative, I don’t want those people representing me. They should be gone. You should be happy though. We screwed up and now we payed the price. Liberals are in control of this country. We deserved it. But the people will pay a price for the democrats in power.

JM, for your information. An ID isn’t required in most states to vote. What do you think about that? The naivete on this blog astounds me. Actually, it saddens me.

  70. joe from Lowell Says:

I thought bachmann and palin were the face of our political party.

Your lips to God’s ears, chief. Oh please oh please oh please.

Listen up liberals. Those professors that taught you in college have an agenda.

Fortunately for the world, doodah remain’s untainted by college professors and their agenda.

  71. Bob Oso Says:

Darn! I almost cornered the Amero coin market. I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for that meddling Bachmann!

  72. joe from Lowell Says:

Hey there’s a group over there that’s not being represented. What, they’re illegal? I don’t care, they represent millions of votes, lets go get em. Whatever it takes for a power grab. You’re happy with that philosophy joe? Seriously?

There you go. Your party, ideas, philosophy, and leaders aren’t hideously unpopular. You just get cheated by the awesome electoral power of teh illegalz.

Say it loud, Brother Dornan! You wuz robbed!

  73. Pat Hendrix Says:

Doodah, are you really that completely unmoored from reality? Socialism is government controlling the means of production and distribution. So far, even the banks that are held in majority share by the govenment are controlled by their boards, not the Obama Adminstration. Second, TARP passed under the Bush Adminstration with the support of such notable commies as Dick Cheney. A similiar situation existed in the 1980s – Savings and Loans with Reagan’s support. Harley was bailed out, too, by Reagan. And Chrysler. There is no communism here, just more of the same. As for tax rates, we’re talking about a top rate of 39 percent. It has historically been much higher (90-50 percent) over the past seventy years. So where is this communist trend? Try reading more, writing less.

  74. Bnad Says:

When the high dark priests of the New World Order replace our beloved sacred dollar with the Lucifer (symbol: £) we will be one step further on our way to Satan’s 1000 year reign! Ha ha ha ha haaaaaa!

  75. Davis X. Machina Says:

Also, I’d be interested to know Bachmann’s views on the Gold Standard

She’s from Minnesota, so I’m sure it’s “Anything over 50 is t-shirt weather’.

    Wait, that’s the Cold Standard.

She would support American Standard to the bitter end, I bet.

  76. g-free8 Says:

To all: Is humor really your medium to get points across? Does that work in the real world too, or just when your sitting in your pj’s typing on your computer. This american idol society where everything on t.v. is the truth is quite funny. I have a few words for this next generation of tech savvy individuals. The real world exists outside of your computer. Fun blog though, I have enjoyed it.

  77. buzz79 Says:

    R u denying that Obama isn’t a socialist

No, I’m not. In fact, I’m asserting that he isn’t a socialist.

Remember, those who teach, usually cant do, teach.

And as Dan Quayle once said, ” A mind is a terrible thing!”

  78. doodah Says:

Hi pat, glad of you to join. Im glad you looked socialism up in the dictionary, but you’re missing the point. Dig a little bit deeper into the root definition and you will find that goods can equal services, such as health care. Does AIG provide services, how bout J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs? They provide goods in the form of services. Just because the government doesn’t own or control the factory yet(GM, CHRYSLER) doesn’t mean their agenda and their goals they have aren’t socialist. There also isn’t any private property in socialism. From what Im hearing from you is a defense of socialism. Why are you liberals so frightened to be labeled one when that is exactly what you think. You can hear it in every word you speak. The liberal likes to poke fun of some people who question this socialist agenda. You make jokes about groups that don’t like regulation and don’t like more laws that strip away freedoms when you take these freedoms for granted. You chastise the very people that are makiing sure they aren’t being stripped. In the meantime liberals have come to think that republicans are rich people and corporations that don’t like taxes and regulation because it benefits them. Media has said it is so, so I guess it is. What else you got for me Mr. Olberman, Im all ears.

  79. doodah Says:

Obama isn’t a socialist? You’re asserting it huh? Maybe he’s moved passed socialism, and moved right into marxism?

Please buzz, tell me what you’re party is about. I must have it all wrong.

  80. Tyro Says:

Doodah, are you really that completely unmoored from reality?

It’s not so much that as he’s not a real person. He fails the Turing Test, as it’s fairly obvious he’s just a machine that spews out disconnected talking points is sentence-long fragments.

(quoth doodah: ” Conservatives stick to their principles. … A lot of the time the republicans didn’t practice what they preach.” — then they don’t stick to their principles, now do they?)

  81. stopthesilliness Says:

It’s a sad thing to see that Bachmann has nothing else better to do with her time than make silly, hollow posturings that amount to nothing, but sound really good to dittoheads. She needs to be replaced by someone who actually wants to get serious, work for the people and get tangible things done in government.

  82. Teebob2000 Says:

    TelePrompTerz!!!!!111 Also.

  83. Stefan Says:

Joe, 2 months. I can’t wait to see what the next 46 months bring.

Maybe an invasion of Iraq, or the destruction of a major American city, or the most massive terrorist attack in American history, or the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression?

On second thought, nah. It’s been done….

  84. doodah Says:

Just like a liberal tyro, only pick the sentence out in a paragraph that you can use against your opponent. Rearrange them in your favor. Whatever you want to do, great. Did you learn that in your poli-sci class under tri-angulation. Or is this something new that David Axelrod came up with. You will see if you cut and pasted everything that I conceeded that the parties representatives haven’t stuck to their principles. That’s why they are being booted out. The conservative movement, which has no party representatives, means that the people of that movement stick to their values and principles. I know all of this typing can get confusing and you may not be able to keep up, but keep cutting and pasting, Im sure you will come up with the truth. I have a lot on my mind and I type fast. Sue me. I shouldn’t say that to you liberals, you might actually take me up on it. Big party of lawyers, ah, you must be proud. The best people nominated to shift and shape the constitution and our country’s laws to form something that looked nothing like the original.

Anyone who says talking point, is a walking talking point. How many more of you are there? I thought you guys were the party of compassion? Angry liberals galore in here!

  85. doodah Says:

Did ur mom’s just get home to make you dinner. R u having mac & cheese tonight or cereal again? Have fun kiddies. See ya. Grow up soon, your country depends on it.

  86. Tyro Says:

doodah has clearly taken the day off from his job writing the blurbs for Dr. Bronner’s soap.

  87. David in NYC Says:

    doodah –

Please don’t think you’re all that just because the Camptown Ladies sing your song.

Now, for a serious question: do you have to practice to be that stupid, or does it just come naturally? Please answer soon; we have a pool going in the office (I bet on “it comes naturally”, but most go with “he practices at it”.)

And a brief observation on your overall position: if you think any politician in this country on a national level is really, truly a socialist, then you don’t have a clue as to what that word actually means. Fer crissakes, Richard Nixon was more “liberal” (read “socialist”, in your world), than anyone currently in office. And, yes, I include Obama.

  88. David in NYC Says:

    doodah –

Please enumerate these conservative “principles” that have been so egregiously violated by the Bush/Cheney maladministration and its lackeys and enablers. I have never heard or read any, just that whatever was done over the past 8 years wasn’t it.

Something to chew on, from a very wise man:

I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it.

John Stuart Mill, letter to the Conservative MP, Sir John Pakington (March, 1866)

  89. Led Says:

The Camptown Ladies quip doesn’t just win the thread, it wins the whole day. As the Veep would say, I literally — literally — laughed out loud. Well done. Still chuckling.

“Buy low, and sell high”, and an attachment to hereditary monarchy and an established church, seem to be the only surviving conservative principles.

A bias towards small government and personal freedoms, an allergy to sweeping Theories of Everything, mistrust of the solvent effects of money on traditional institutions and traditional mores, skepticism towards empire-building adventures and the large standing army and navy they require — all conservative principles, all overtaken by events.

  92. j denim Says:

What happened to the Amero conspiracy?

Go ahead and laugh it up everyone. I agree Bachman is an idiot and is no doubt drumming up this John Birch style conspiracy to excite her base, but what she’s talking about isn’t so far fetched. Supranational currencies aren’t made up overnight and the new reserve currency based on a basket of foreign currencies is a very logical first step and is receiving widepread support from prominent economists like Joseph Stiglitz.

If the US dollar collapses like the Icelandic Kroner or the Russian Ruble do you really think Americans or Congress would have any compunction about adopting a more stable supranational currency?

Keep laughing but I doubt any of us will be spending US dollars in ten years.

  93. joe from Lowell Says:

Keep laughing but I doubt any of us will be spending US dollars in ten years.

Oh, is that what one does with a reserve currency?

  94. DJ Says:

sigh…From the same idiots who thought creating an arsenal of 10s of thousands of nukes wasn’t a first step towards the end of the world (MAD will save us) but a new reserve currency, hoooold on a sec now.

If you find yourself applying your principle (slippery slope, in this case)in a ridiculously selective manner, maybe its time to consider whether you actually have a principle.

  95. Rrrrrrrrr Says:

I’ll bet she’s a tiger in the sack, too.

Too bad for her that Marcus, her husband, is gay as a picnic basket.

  96. HoboSpaceJungle Says:

  98. Pat Hendrix Says:

    Doodah,

What you need is an eighth grade civics class explaining political systems, not a forum to mindlessly blurt out hackneyed talking points. You have failed to cite a single instance of “socialism” – health care is not going to nationalized. No banks have been nationalized. TARP passed under Bush. The automakers are not being nationalized, they are being bailed out the way Harley and Chrysler were in the 1980s. The top rate is historically lower under this budget than it has been the majority of this century. Again, where are facts to substantiate this silly notion? Facts. Facts. Facts.

  99. David in NYC Says:

    Led –

Thanks so much. Hope I didn’t cause any spewing of food or beverage on your keyboard. ;-)

  100. mk3872 Says:

Too bad this is NOT A JOKE! Bachmann actually believes the baloney eminating from AM Radio and Fox News as it enters her empty head.

And now she is trying to pass legislation based on ginned-up borderline-jokes from Drudge & FNC.

I love the walk-back, too, from the spokesman: this is about the U.S. using the dollar! LOL! Yeah, that would be why she called it a “global currency”, right?

  101. Bernice Cintron Says:

Matthew Yglesias. You are an idiot and obviously do not know how to read!!!! Bachmann is far from a kook and if your species would just keel over and stayed locked up in your homes on election day we wouldn’t be near destruction!!!

  102. Shelly Says:

You’ve all got to understand something about Bachmann. She operates on another wavelength altogether. She seriously believes that God told her to run for Congress. I mean “told her” to run for Congress after several days of fasting. She told voters that she has literally talked to God many times.

She is from some other planet. The planet “Kook”.

She has drank of the Kook Aide.

  103. Dan from Sioux Falls Says:

Gotta love Bachmann, she has taken crazy to an art form. I wonder if the Republicans are holding some kind of contest where they can see what Republican female can come up with the craziest schtick….Phyllis Schaffely, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Linda Chavez, and now in the lead Michelle Bachmann!!!!!
