Political Instability Rises Along With Joblessness

Nelson Schwartz has a good piece in The New York Times about how the worsening economic situation is threatening political stability in many countries.

One virtue of living in a democracy, of course, is that we can channel this kind of discontent in peaceful ways—Barack Obama becomes president, Labour will almost certainly get the sack in the U.K.—whereas there’s some chance that an authoritarian country like China will totally melt down. Of course in the U.S. system it’s possible for a minority of Senators to thwart efforts to change things through the electoral system.

Oh, I don’t know. If some bankrupt US citizen blew Texan Phil Gramm’s fucking head off with a shotgun, I don’t know that I would convict that citizen if I was serving on the jury.

TIME magazine has a list of the top 25 people most responsible for the financial collapse: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1877351_1877350,00.html

What’s interesting is the Names they LEFT off the list:
    Larry Summers, Robert Rubin,

Plus Jim Saxby and Senator Bennett (Republican Chairmen of Congress’s Joint Economic Committee circa 2004-2006
    – and in my opinion among the people MOST RESPONSIBLE for this goatfuck.)

While all of this is interesting, I fail to see how it relates to the cultural importance of Iverson cutting his hair…

In China Bernie Madoff would be in jail.

CR points out that OTS Chairman John Reich is major player who is always overlooked in the “blame lists”.

    There, fixed that for you.

How so many seemingly intelligent people fell under the spell of Reagan, dem and GOP pols alike, astonishes me.

He’s the one that sold us the economic McCarthyism that has devastated America. He should be burned in effigy during an internationally televised broadcast. The whole world would rejoice.

I’m a bit more squishy than Don, so I can’t wholeheartedly endorse this-although I’d be satisfied if an unemployed computer programmer hacked into one of Gramm’s offshore bank accounts and fucking drained him of his ill gotten gains.

Also- what the fuck is it with Texas producing a disproportionate amount of abrasive, ultra-right wing assholes- Gramm, Dick Armey, Tom DeLay. Is there a secret government asshole laboratory there?

Um, Weimar Germany collapsed in the aftermath of the Depression. Democratic Italy collapsed during the recession after WWI. Unclear if the Depression caused Spain to go fascist. Authoritarian USSR, Hungary and others maintained stable (if, of course, authoritarian) forms of government.
