Picture Picture, on the Blog

By Brian Beutler

Seems as if Matt wants more pictures. Well, like Matt, I too have been to Barcelona. It’s been almost a year, now, but presumably things haven’t changed that much. For instance, as now, people liked this guy:

They had both phallic, modern construction:

And Gaudi:

And this, which made me laugh:

The end.

Excellent pictures, better than Matt’s. Who the heck are you?

  2. sam Says:

I went to barcelona right before christmas. They actually have a bar named “Obama.” I think Matt needs to visit the Obama bar.

  3. brianbeutler Says:

Whoa. I wonder if I missed that. Maybe it’s new?

Ted: I’m just a guy with a blog!

is that second photo of a gherkin, like the one in london? i’ve heard they build them all over the world now.

  5. johnnyk Says:

At least Gaudi’s had a little tickler motif on it. Way more fun than the gherkin blunt instrument. Perhaps a difference in Catalan and Anglo-Saxon sensibilities?

  6. SPURIOUS Says:

That second picture: They shouldn’t have made it blue.

  7. B Says:

Gaudi’s blemish is a symptom of the Disneyfication of Christianity, as I told a girl, persuading but failing to impress.

    More pictures!

  8. JohnH Says:

Brian, I believe he meant not what your bio is, but rather his puzzlement, as you didn’t sign the post. (The phallic image reminds me of the Gherkin, showing that you don’t have to be from Gaudi territory to go, er, nuts.)

  9. brianbeutler Says:

Ah yes. Not used to signing my name to each post. Updated now.

  10. Jeremy Says:

I want to second the signing your name. I keep getting confused. I thought this was from KS, since I think a couple of her posts were unsigned. Nice to see you fixed it between me reading the main page and clicking on this post.

Keep up the interesting posts, all of you. These photos are quite cool as well. It’s good to see the Sagrada Familia getting more and more complete. I saw it in 1997 and again in 2001.

I think I prefer a Matt only blog. This photo-post is just spam.

I’ve been living in the Netherlands for the last year and a half and traveling quite a bit, including to Egypt and Tanzania. The response here to Obama has been overwhelmingly positive. People asked about Obama all the time and whether I supported him. I was not surprised when I saw Obama blankets, pictures, books, paintings, and such in both Egypt and Tanzania but I was surprised at the pure joy when people talked about Obama. Much of this is probably due to his being of African descent and also having lived in a Muslim country but after talking with people for awhile I realized it went much deeper. The idea of being treated with respect had a big impact. Also the idea of using diplomacy rather than war has great appeal. It went deeper still though. Obama’s appeal to higher ideals, to helping each other, to making the world a better place, and yes, his infusion of hope, these seemed to be the real drivers of Obama fever.

Here in the Netherlands people were almost as excited. The Dutch tend to be well-educated, well-read and very aware of international events. They tend to be generous to charities and great believers in human rights. They have been fighting and dying with us in Afghanistan. In fact, the Dutch are leading the NATO effort there currently. Comments by the Bush administration and Congressional Republicans deriding the European efforts in Afghanistan have not gone over well. Obama’s victory was widely praised and celebrated here.

Nice to see that Obama is liked in Catalonia , will be there shortly and then on to destinations further south . Was planning a day or 2 in Morocco ( tangier )but with my wife and 3 kids in tow and following the offences of Gaza am having my doubts ?
However the interest in Obama in North Africa may be a tipping point for my “preoccupado grande” .
    Any recommendations ?

the focyou thing is pretty good, but I’ve seen better

In the Palermo Soho neighborhood of Buenos Aires, there is a store called (I kid you not) “Diablo Mother Fucker”

I took a picture of it and it’s the wallpaper for my laptop. I didn’t even go into the store (it was a t-shirt store of some sort, the shirts in the window weren’t anywhere near as cool as the name of the store).

I believe Matt was asking that more frequently the guests’ posts be accompanied by pictures, not for a single post of several random pictures. And he’s right. The pictures make the blog much more readable. If you’re looking for a particular post, you need only scroll and find the accompanying picture. If you are checking back to see if there is new content, seeing a new picture is a quick way of discovering what’s new. With the guest bloggers, it has been noticably more difficult to figure out what’s new and what isn’t. After all, take a look at how many posts are about similar topics like the stimulus or Daschle. This may sound like a small thing, but it really isn’t. And the change since Matt’s left has made that even more apparent. I bet I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Re amusing signs… my favourite was a MacDonalds sign in Lausanne train station in Switzerland, which had the golden arches and underneath “Pile en Face”. Obviously that was an indication that there was a Maccy D’s opposite the station, and that one should walk over the road to get to it, but still…
