Bad Burris
I think it’s fair to say that Roland Burris’ debut as a U.S. Senator is not going so well:
In the latest in a series of shifting accounts of his conduct, Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.) told reporters that he tried to raise money for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich at the same time he was asking Blagojevich to appoint him to the Senate.
Burris said he contacted “some people” about holding a fundraiser at the request of Blagojevich’s brother, Robert, only to learn that no one was willing to help the governor. He said he later changed his mind, raised no money and contributed none.
The account to reporters in Peoria, Ill., was Burris’s fifth version of his contacts with close associates of Blagojevich and the first time he acknowledged trying to raise money for the former governor, who was arrested and forced from office on corruption charges.
Now we’ve got an Illinois prosecutor looking into things along with the Senate ethics committee and I’d say Burris’ shot at the 2010 nomination look pretty slim. He doesn’t really seem to have done anything corrupt per se, but ambition and desire for a Senate seat definitely seem to have gotten the better of his good sense and basic ethics. Maybe he could be made Commerce Secretary?

So basically, Burris’s sequence of events is:
1. Rod “Crookeder than a Crankshaft” Blagojevich tries to shake down Burris.
2. Burris tries to raise some funds for Blago, fails, then has second thoughts and stops.
3. ???
4. Blago gives f*&%ing valuable senate seat to Burris.
…Yeah, I think this has credibility problems.

Ha! Well, don’t anyone hold their breath waiting for this megalomaniac to resign, or for the Senate to charge him with either perjury or any kind of ethics breach. Although, come to think of it, usually you can’t get anyone on board for such a thing due to their fear of retaliation for this own corrupt behavior. But in this case, taking shots at Burris would be comparatively easy and cost-free, so maybe they’ll actually do something to this guy, since he really can’t fight back much, other than to say “so what?” I mean, really, he’ll be there ’til 2010, and then he’ll lose to some other, equally corrupt but far more slick & savvy politician. Who cares anyways? Like the Senate has some sterling reputation these days! He’s not really much more of a jackass than half of the people there currently.

If there was no Commerce Department, that would be fine. Everything that it does now would instead be done by other departments or agencies. Since there is a Commerce Department, and tasks are assigned to it, it would be a good thing if there was a Commerce secretary.

I’m not crazy about Burris, and think there should always be a special election, but that’s in the future. How much of this is driven by Republicans who want to keep another Democratic vote out of the senate to stymie Obama’s agenda, as they are doing with Franken.

I’m not sure that would make much difference, at least unless Franken gets into his seat before the hypothetical Burris replacement does.
If the the senate drops to 98 seats, only 59 votes will be required for cloture. The Democratic caucus would still have 57 seats and would need the same number of Republicans that they need now – 2 (or 3 depending on Kennedy’s day-to-day health).

I’d say very little. David Orr and Lisa Madigan aren’t exactly known as partisan Republicans, and you can’t be sure that Quinn won’t just appoint another Dem to the seat.
