U6

Brad DeLong offers some further context for the jobs numbers, observing that “And U-6–unemployed plus discouraged workers plus unable to fond a full-time job–is now at 13.5% of the labor force–and BLS ‘discouraged workers’ are a big undercount of the concept.” With so many able-bodied, working age people not actually working, we’re producing many fewer goods and services than we have the capacity to produce.

That’s okay! If they were producing those goods there’d be nobody to buy them anyway.

    What Eric said, obviously.

Eric and Rich beat me to it.

Obviously the overwhelming question is not how much you can produce but how much can be consumed.

I think that we should construct a new economy wherein the rich are guaranteed a certain amount of funds every year with the precondition that they have to use a predetermined fraction of the money to employ non-workers at slightly more than living wages to produce nothing.

This will keep the Republicans happy and the Democrats content.

U6 was much better back in the 80’s, before they got so full of themselves.

Yeah. I was going to make some joke about U2 adjusted for inflation or some such, but I couldn’t quite get it to a state worth clicking “submit” for.

Which is why we are at no danger of inflation despite the large amounts of money we ading to our economy.
