One thing about being a cabinet secretary? It takes a lot out of you. It’s hard work, after all, and there’s a certain measure of accountability when faced with scandal and catastrophic failure.
All of this is to say that it figures, it’s not like she was doing anything the last eight years anyway.
Yes, she IS weirdly anonymous — which is strange, since the official in charge of industrial relations and the union movement would be, in any other country, considered one of the most important officials in the country.
In Australia, Julia Gillard is a household name. So was her predecessor, Joe Hockey. Admittedly, they oversee tumultuous times, but it’s a symbol of the utter imbalance in labour relations in your country that the cabinet secretary responsible is completely unknown and inert — even with her dubious accomplishment.

yay, i got it. for Trivia Question #2 let’s go more insidery:
Who is the only person in the whole fucking universe that still links to Edwards’ One America Committee in comment threads?

Mrs. Mitch McConnell – Elaine Chao.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Perhaps, since Elaine gets to go home, her hubby Mitch can eat babies with her as opposed to being an obstructionist all the damn time.

We’ve had a Secretary of Labor for the past eight years?
January 12th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Win
January 12th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
And she didn’t get right-to-work universally instituted!

Not cabinet-level, but Director Mueller has been there as well. It’s weird that there’s been almost zero speculation as to his successor.

She was head of the Peace Corps during Bush I. Our Peace Corps newsletter had a recipe section called “A lane of Chow”

I can’t wait to go to the Post Office next Wednesday and see the picture of Hilda Solis smiling down at me.

Yes!
(Although my first thought was “Dick Cheney”, because he’s certainly made the Vice-Presidency into a quasi-Cabinet position.)

@fostert
No, she didn’t. That’s how she kept her job.

If only Alan Colmes had stayed on until the de-auguration, Sean Hannity could be said to have held the “same job” through the entire term.
What? He’s not in the Bush Administration??

I think the Drug Czar is cabinet rank and has served all 8.
America Rights at Work sent an awesome email with subject line: “Say Ciao to Chao”.
