The Snub

bill_richardson_2_1.jpg

Andrew Golis lists ten young progressive intellectuals who make him hopeful. But who cares about that? The real issue is those of us who didn’t make the cut:

I probably would have included Jessica Valenti and Josh Marshall if not for the painfully obvious conflicts of interest (fiancee and boss). I might also have included a few more bloggers (Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, Atrios) but for a desire to not overwhelm things with whiteboysblogging.

I’m going to have to start leaning harder on my Hispanic credentials so I can make it onto more prestigious lists. Admittedly, my skin is pretty pale. But look at Bill Richardson! And I’ve got an actual Spanish name which is more than he can say.

I’d say you look like Ben Gibbard.

  2. gregor Says:

    There is hope.

I have not yet seen the list of the ten snarkiest and funniest bloggers who mange to survive despite the twin handicaps of not owning a dictionary and being the Palmieri’s beetch.

  3. Don Williams Says:

Wave a knife under Golis’s nose and tell him you will cut his nuts off the next time he calls you “white boy”. Then say something in Spanish. He’ll be your bitch in no time.

I told you to buy a pukko knife when you were in Finland, but did you listen?

  4. AHG Says:

I haven’t seen a post from you about integrating texas back into the Mexican motherland in a while. Maybe a bit more in that vein will help….

  5. scythia Says:

I’m disappointed that the “Self-Indulgence” tag has only been applied to one post.

  6. James Gary Says:

Any list of “intellectuals” that has Rachel Maddow at the top seems a bit suspect to me.

  7. Nicholas Beaudrot Says:

The real issue is that you’ve been around so long that people no longer think of you as young.

Obligatory “Oh my god I’m so old” comment. A friend of mine coaches a debate team in Oakland. I called him and one of his kids picked up because he was driving. After I got off the phone, I thought “wow. Remember that grown-up in high school who tried to talk like he was still a kid and cool. OMG I’M THAT GUY NOW”. Scary stuff.

  8. Nate Says:

    @James Gary:
I don’t think many other political commentators hold doctorates from Oxford. So I think Maddow comes pretty close to being an intellectual, at least for a pundit.

  9. Andrew Fly Says:

What? Ph.D. Rhodes Scholar not enough for you?

  10. N Says:

    James Gary-

Maddow was a Rhodes scholar and has a doctorate in political science from Oxford. What exactly is suspect about that?

  11. norbizness Says:

Not only that, but I heard she like went to Oxford n’ shit.

  12. James Gary Says:

Commenter eds from the original post at TPM says it better than I could: “She’s made being an intellectual liberal a matter of trite smarmy and snarky cliches and awful posturing.”

Where she went to school seems entirely beside the point— although I’d like to thank the three separate commenters who felt motivated to highlight points from Rachel’s resume.

  13. ajg Says:

Golis is engaged to Jessica Valenti? Lucky bastard.

  14. Tommer Says:

Welcome to the business end of affirmative action.

  15. myglesias Says:

I just thought of creating one — expect it to show up more often.

    Mi familia es Cubano.

Normally, one has to change a baby’s diaper to see mustard color of that particular hue.

  18. Ben V-L Says:

I’m sure Richardson can say “Yglesias” just fine.

  19. 24AheadDotCom Says:

Is there any post about “progressivism” that won’t eventually descend into racism?

I don’t get MSNBC, but MattY linked to a Maddow clip approvingly yet all the Great Intellectual did was snark; I’d imagine most of her other Intellectualizm is along those lines.

I’d also imagine that most of the people on that list have not been tested by going up against strong opponents who could show how they’re wrong.

In the case of Hayes, see the pushback from Nation readers here. Even MattY – Yet Another Great Intellectual – linking approvingly to that piece couldn’t save him. And, compare what Hayes wrote to what Obama said.

    Up with Liberal Intellechuallizm!

  20. Trevor Says:

Rick Perlstein’s “Nixonland” sucked. Aside from its deceptively appealing title and the bold color scheme of the jacket – it had all the fierce, visionary glamour of a Tidal Basin midnight escapade with Fanne Foxe. It meandered, it zig-zagged, it died on the vine. If this toadstool made it on the list – there’s nothing to despair about. Of course, I can think of few worse thinks than being labelled a progressive.

  21. joe from Lowell Says:

Is there any post about “progressivism” that won’t eventually descend into racism?

Not with you around, there isn’t.

Meshkins gonna getcha, LoneWacko! They’re gonna getcha!

  22. jeebus Says:

Which of Rachel Maddow’s important scholarly works should I read first?

  23. Nate Says:

Oh I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware that “intellectual” and “scholar” were synonyms. …what’s that you say? They aren’t? How about that.

  24. Cranky Observer Says:

Andrew Golis was run to ground, capture, trussed up, and carted home by Jessica Valenti? Additional benefits to working for TPM Media that Josh doesn’t advertise in the job postings.

    Cranky

  25. pseudonymous in nc Says:

I’d also imagine that most of the people on that list have not been tested by going up against strong opponents who could show how they’re wrong.

Got anyone in mind, Kelly? Resolved to leave your basement in 2009 without shitting out your guts at the sight of a brown person?

  26. PTate in MN Says:

Yeah, it makes total sense that we should exclude brilliant contributors because their gender and race put them in a demographic that our society needs to discriminate against because those bastards had so much privilege in the past.

No, wait! Yglesias has a Hispanic name! So, he, at least, does not need to be automatically excluded from the list as a white boy who blogs…I feel so much better!?!!

Sometimes identity politics is so deeply internalized, such an reflex action, that one wonders how our society will ever sort throught issues of discrimination and prejudice.

  27. nolaboyd Says:

a demographic that our society needs to discriminate against because those bastards had so much privilege in the past.

Actually, we do pretty fucking awesome in the present too. As Chris Rock said, “not a white man in the country would trade places with me, and I’m rich!”

  28. Brian Says:

    Mi familia es Cubano.

Nationalities never carry a capital letter in Spanish. Better just to get a tan and wave a knife at the affirmative action wimps, anyhow. Thuggishness is all they know.

  29. John Emerson Says:

Power is definitely to be preferred to Slaughter in the area of strategy.

I just love the way liberals tear someone apart if they go on the mass media where they can actually influence public opinion. Krugman gets all kinds of flak and his Nobel may have been delayed for a year or two.

Maddow works in a very restricted format, but I’m confident that she’s smarter and more knowledgeable than the bozos here who are sneering at her.

  30. Andrew Fly Says:

Matthew Yglesias, the Emilio Estevez of blogging

  31. CJColucci Says:

I’m astounded that nobody has pointed out yet that Matt is a trust-fund scumbag.

  32. Glen Tomkins Says:

    Hate to say this

But even if you changed the “Y” to an “I”, people would not ask if you’re related to Julio Iglesias.

  33. cynickal Says:

I hear Richardson isn’t using his beard anymore.
    It might lend you credibility

  34. UserGoogol Says:

Also, Ezra Klein is Jewish. Jews and light-skinned Hispanics are both kind of on that borderline of whiteness.

  35. Ripley Says:

I see the point with including Maddow, and with Golis’ other choices, but Atrios? He’s funny at times, but for the most part he writes five-word posts (noun-verb-snark-snark-fuck), lifts sizable chunks of text from traditional media sources for padding, and gets 400+ slavish and/or raving comments and a web-ad revenue stream to envy. It’s not so much that I don’t sense the ‘progressive intellectual’ there, but that I rarely hear the voice.

  36. Lamenter Says:

Yeah, I used to really dig Atrios but he lost the plot a long time ago.

  37. iron pimp hand Says:

God, that list sucked. Must hurt not to even be able get on a list that features chris hayes.

  38. novakant Says:

I know quite a few people who have gone to Oxbridge and/or have a PhD and while they’re all bright, some of them even brilliant, only two or three of them qualify as intellectuals.

  39. Cranky Observer Says:

That is just about the hardest type of writing to do well. Try it yourself for a week, then imagine doing it 6-7 days/week for 5 years and maintaining that level of intensity. Sort of like stand-up comedy: looks very easy from the audience.

    Cranky

  40. Iván Says:

Hate to say this, Matt, being a big fan and all, but messing up the capitalization (minor) and the gender of the adjective to “familia” (major) is not doing your Hispanic bona-fides a whole lotta good.

  41. Mordu Says:

Well, you can also use your (presumably Sephardic) Jewish credentials to lobby for a cabinet position. As you noted, still lacking (as if it matters).

Excuse me. This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.
I am from Mauritius and also now am reading in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “American airlines, is the world largest airline, which is based in texas, usa it operates flights throughout the us and also offers transport to latin.”

    Best regards :P , Wilma.
