The Name’s Bond, Kit Bond

b000611.jpg

Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) has decided to retire rather than seek re-election in 2010. This is one of those seats that’s probably safe in the hands of the incumbent, but potentially up for grabs as an open seat. Dave Weigel observes that the leading candidates will be Secretary of State Robin Carnahan on the Democratic side and Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, the only non-Bond GOP statewide official. There are also a passel of House Republicans who could make a play for the seat.

Of course a big factor here is going to be how things look in 2010. John McCain carried Missouri very narrowly last fall. Extrapolating from Barack Obama’s large “transition bounce” you’ve got to figure he’s pretty popular in the state right now and a Democrat would have good chances. If there are clear signs of a recovery by 2010, that’ll still be the case but if we’re in economic doldrums not so much.

I think Matt may be underestimating the degree to which people might blame lingering economic problems on the Republicans.

Ooh, I don’t know. I think people in 2010 are going to say: all right, you guys have had complete control over the government for two years now. Why does the economy still suck? I thought you said you were going to fix it! What about that big stimulus bill you passed back in March of ‘09? What did that do?

Obama will have to make really, really good use of the bully pulpit to get people to think differently.

  2. jeebus Says:

Also, Kit Bond has a very bad complexion.

  3. pseudonymous in nc Says:

What jeebus said. Which is why Obama needs to realise that playing nice with Congressional Republicans is a bad idea, and why Harry Reid needs to be replaced by a Senate Majority Leader with a spine. If the GOP wants to hamstring the stimulus bill, then the Dems will suffer the consequences of letting them.

In Britain, Labour could go to the well of ‘remember how the Tories fucked up?’ for an extended period of time, but that doesn’t apply in the US with its never-ending electoral churn.

I have to say, Kit looks a bit Bondish in this pic. Something about the expression on his face.

Hasn’t the Carnahan family held a senate seat for long enough???

Reminds me of Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and their son Rahul.

    Two years?

  7. Craig Travis Says:

Jim Talent, the guy that lost to Claire McCaskil would be a better competitor. Peter Kinder is a jerk. Missouri has term limits so Kinder hasn’t had any local competition. Gov. Blunt would be the best republican challenger but he is so burnt out there is no chance. We still can’t believe McCain won the state. We’re just a border state with too much of the south in us

  8. rapier Says:

Bye bye. I hardly knew he existed. Now he doesn’t.

The Name is Bond. Obama Bonds.

  9. Joe Strummer Says:

I think it’s safe to say that the chances of the Democrats picking up the seat are “not so much.” And this is because the country will not just be in the midst of “economic doldroms”, after some light in early 2010, the second dip is going to start kicking in and we’ll be on our way down again.

  10. nbt Says:

Gabriel: You’re right, my memory was off, I thought Jean Carnahan held the senate seat for longer. But Mel was governor for 8 years.

    Wrong.

This is great news for John Cornyn’s bid for America’s Worst Senator. His only remaining obstacle is Inhofe. Cornyn has really upped his game in the last few years, easily outclassing Kyl and pulling even with Bond. If Cornyn can bring enough crazy to balance his hackery he can take Inhofe, who recently has started to slide into clown territory.
