The Importance of Hydration

I don’t always actually manage to follow Neil Sinhababu’s sound advice on hangover avoidance, but it’s still true. Interestingly, I was first taught this tip by my high school physics teacher. Some would say it was an inappropriate subject, but honestly I think it’s a smart idea for science instructors to show that their expertise can be practical.

I swear by this advice. Though to be fair, I have never had a hangover in my life despite drinking copious quantities of alcohol at various points in my life, including last night. I have a naturally high tolerance due to genetics and build, and I suspect that my secret superpower is simply to not get hungover, no matter how much I drink. But the water does help, and even if I don’t get a hangover, I do appreciate waking after a night of drinking feeling a bit more chipper.

I find it works pretty well to post-hydrate as well. I always keep a lot of water ready for when I return home after a long night of drinking. The only problem is that half the time I’m too drunk and tired to remember to drink it before I fall asleep. So it’s really a two step process. 1) Remember to drink a lot of water before going to bed, and 2) actually drink the water.

  3. cheflovesbeer Says:

If you did not hydrate enough the night before, try something with sugar. Sodas do not count. They will not rehydrate you. Gator aid, lemonade, fruit juice, heck even water with sugar. Your body needs the sugar to replace the sugars used to breakdown the alcohol.

  4. Andruw Says:

Next day remedy, giant bottle of Vitamin Water-Revive.

Or, just start drinking again, works every time. Hey, now that I think about it….

  5. serial catowner Says:

Right, what also works is to drink a large glass of water every time you get up to relieve yourself during the night. Which will be often if your water glass is large enough.

I thought your high school physics teacher told you to eat popcorn?

    One word: Pedialyte

Hate to tell you, but, first, it’s pretty irrelevant to physics. Maybe it was your biology teacher, and your science education blends together over the years.

Second, take a look at actual texts. Publishers are falling over one another to prove that their textbook relates more to students by including more motivation through “real-world” examples.

Third, even in biology, it wouldn’t be a big deal, so might not be chosen as an example, because you don’t need biology to remind you of your mother telling you to drink however many glasses of water. That would just turn students off, in fact. And finally, no, examples on how to cope with underage drinking might not go over without controversy.

  9. AZ escapee Says:

Been doing this about as long as MY has walked among us, and I concur that hydration (pre- and post-) is good, but Emergen-C is better. If you hydrate enough during and after the fun, you’ll wake up before dawn to pee. Now is the moment to apply an enormous mug of dilute Emergen-C. Back to bed for a few more hours’ recuperation. You’ll rise with no regrets.

  10. Josh G Says:

Hydration can be helpful. I usually drink about 1 pint of water for every 2 pints of beer. But the thing that has really done the trick for me is taking 2-3 advil/ibuprofen before getting into bed. really really helps.

  11. Njorl Says:

I recall that vomitting and laying around all day feeling miserable made my hangovers go away.

  12. duBois Says:

I once, as a young and inexperienced drinker, mixed vodka with beer and wound up on my knees puking up so much stuff that the bathroom resembled the gutting-the-shark scene in Jaws.

That is how Daddy quit drinking, children. No drinking, no hangover.
