The Crab Dribble

Revisiting yesterday’s LeBron James contention that it’s okay to travel if you call it a “crab dribble,” I note that my friend Chris Hayes managed to unearth this document lurking on CoachesClipboard.ca — a web page for Canadian basketball coaches.

Mike McNeil, director of coaching development for Basketball British Columbia, explains the whole thing. Except the move he’s describing doesn’t seem to bare much resemblance at all to what LeBron did on the floor.

    Crab dribble?

Maybe it’s a bear dribble. They have bears in Canada.

    LeBron was playing naked?

Let’s just say he’s been exposed.

I kind of like the idea that when a guy lifts his pivot foot before he starts dribbling, if he calls it a *hesitation* dribble, then it’s all ok…

The NBA should just get rid of dribbling altogether. The game that LeBron and a lot of other stars want to play is clearly not basketball, and it would help fans if the NBA would clearly divorce themselves from the game that high schools, colleges, and foreign leagues play.

LBJ’s move against the ‘zards was indeed a travel.

However, his normal “go to move” is almost identical, and isn’t a travel.

I think the most effective way to do this would be to call themselves something unique like, say, the “National Basketball Association,” as long as that one isn’t taken yet. And then maybe they could just shorten it to “NBA.”

Or maybe they could go with “Non-Mickey Mouse Three Point Line League” or “You Thought You Had To Play Defense In College Holy Shit You Have No Idea League.”

I don’t know. Matt has covered this pretty well in the past, hasn’t he?

What I like about this whole incident is what a nerdy route LeBron took whine against the refs. It was almost like David Addington talking about the “unitary executive”, whipping out some obscure term in hopes that folks will think his knowledge is so vast and comprehensive that they should trust him more than their own reasoning.

Sorry for the gratuitous self-promotion, and I don’t usually do this, but I covered this whole topic, including the Canadian hoops page, in a bit more depth on our NBA blog yesterday.

To be fair, the Canadian page is not hard to find; it’s the only basketball-related hit when you search for “crab dribble -lebron” on google!

I know exactly what a crab dribble is now. Magic always used one to keep smaller quicker defenders away from the ball.

I’m not sure what it has to do with what Lebron did. If you perform a crab dribble, then follow it up with three steps, it’s still a travel.

If LeBron James wants to play a sport in which the athlete holding the ball is allowed to take multiple running steps while retaining possession, he should go play football.
