If Jon Chait thinks I’ve veered into some kind of objectionable “moral equivalent” (incidentally, if he doesn’t like using those buzzwords, which he shouldn’t, then it seems to me he shouldn’t use them), then he’s really not going to like this from Steven Walt’s new blog.
Also: Steven Walt has a new blog as part of the new Foreign Policy website.
I think that’s a gutsy move by Foreign Policy and a great one. There have been about a million posts in the blogosphere lamenting the lack of pundit accountability — the tendency of the media landscape not to shift at all no matter how bad some people’s forecasts turn out to be. This is the reverse of that. The sort of “realist” perspective that Walt comes from (and helps define) is definitely one that looks better in light of the past eight years worth of events. And yet there’s been precious little media interest in giving it more exposure — in part because it leads to conclusions that aren’t necessarily what candidates for office want to hear. But it’s crucially important to expand the conversation on national security issues and this is an important step toward doing so.

The “moral equivalence” charge is something cowardly propagandists have been making for generations in order to silence people from ever making logical comparisons they don’t like. The crimes of Our Nation or Our Ally must be contextualized by who We or They are, not by what they do.
They pulled this sh*t all the time in the Reagan era. As our government was running around gleefully helping Central American tyrants bash babies’ heads into rocks and rape nuns and bomb clinics and generally slaughter civilians by the tens of thousands, bold types as Chait stood up to moan and groan about how dare you make a “moral equivalence” between Our Fair Nation and whatever prior evil actions by some evil nation to whom our murderous, villainous actions were being compared.
Go to hell, Chait, and I don’t give a sh*t what you do or don’t think is permitted as a “moral equivalent.” Shove that little propaganda tool up your a**. I’m sick of it.

As a realist and an appreciator of Foreign Policy who has plenty of sympathy for the Palestinians, I am deeply concerned by the decision to give the dangerous extremist, Steven Walt, an outlet on the FP website. Very, truly, deeply concerned. Concerned! NEVER AGAIN!

Al: After you lied constantly and repeatedly about the Goldfarb post, claiming that Goldfarb was talking about a Hamas leader who had killed his own family, when he was clearly discussing a family killed in a bomb attack, maybe you should back off on charges of who misinterpreted what. And you’ve not corrected yourself nor apologized.

Al, the term “moral equivalence” is not perfectly apt here, in fact it is a gross distortion of what Matt wrote, and therefore Chait should know better than to use this term — whether buzzword or not.
Granted, I don’t expect any different from you.

Al: Your characterization was a lie, given that you were recharacterizing what Goldfarb had written. Goldfarb wrote nothing about Rayan being responsible for his own family’s death via the phone call hypothesis. He didn’t. So, you completely lied about what Goldfarb had written, apparently thinking your rewrite including the phone call interpretation weighs more than what Goldfarb actually wrote. You’re a cheap liar, and as I pointed out then and point out again now, you don’t care that you’re lying.

Love some of these posts. The language they use is suggestive of real desperation. It is no longer possible to totally disguise what is happening to the Palestinian people, and her so called defenders are forced to the edge to try and make any smear stick.

Whatever Salt Lake City:
Walt’s book presents reasoned analysis regarding the Israel Lobby – nothing the book says is really all that controversial: AIPAC does exact significant influence in Washington (a claim they themselves make), and they advocate on behalf of a foreign country who’s interests don’t always align with those of the United States. Exactly what part of that is controversial?
And if you really want to make an intelligent comment (well, that WOULD be a first), try to actually rebut Walt’s arguments and evidence – you might enjoy not being a tool.

The fact that a Zionist freakazoid needle dick son of a whore like SLC complains about Stephen Walt’s book is all one needs to know about the latter.
Walt’s “thought experiment” was good. Basically his description of how the Orthodox hardliners would end up as terrorists pretty much describes how Israel was founded in the first place. The difference between the Irgun and Haganah then and Al Qaeda today is minimal. The only difference really is that Hollywood hasn’t romanticized Al Qaeda like they did the Zionists.
