Searching for Stimulus Opponents

The House GOP’s efforts to publicly solicit the names of economists opposed to the idea of an economic stimulus package is an interesting gambit. On the one hand, it reveals how crass and political John Boehner really is—he picked his policy position first, and then started looking for experts to back him second. Beyond that, it reveals how shallow the depth of opposition really is.

Brad DeLong observes that “no current or former member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers–Democrat or Republican, living or dead, sane or insane–has signed up for the Republican House caucus’s list of economists opposed to the stimulus package.”

I eagerly await Mr. Boehner’s next teary eyed floor speech on the end of wingnut relevance and how we’re all gonna die, followed by the Ten Top Reasons why that Nancy is so frickin’ mean.

  2. Wisconsin Reader Says:

I believe an appropriate use of stimulus funds would be to withhold revenue sharing from any states wherein a majority of their Congressional and Senate representatives refuse to support Obama’s plan (And they can keep their $1 they pay in taxes for every $2 they get back in federal funds). . . We should not force them to participate in programs they philosophically disagree with.

Who is Barack Obama to require these patriotic Republicans to walk down this road to Socialism?. . . The same policy should also be applied when universal healthcare is enacted.

  3. dantonj Says:

Matt, you are so much better at this than your former colleague at the Atlantic, Megan McArdle, who pegs herself as “The world’s tallest female econoblogger who delivers her opinions on economics, business, and other moral hazards.” While you’ve been discussing Obama’s economic plan, she has be talking about her search for an apartment and her picks for what everyone should have in their kitchens.

  4. Notorious P.A.T. Says:

But–but–but–but I heard we are in a post-partisan age, when political differences have been transcended! !! Quick, someone tell John Boehner about our new era!! !

he picked his policy position first, and then started looking for experts to back him second

And this is different from the Republican party of the past 40 years how?

  5. Glaivester Says:

Why quote Brad Delong? He’s already shown himself to be an asshole who shuts down comments whenever anyone opposes him.

“no current or former member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers–Democrat or Republican, living or dead, sane or insane–has signed up for the Republican House caucus’s list of economists opposed to the stimulus package.”

Of course not. Economists opposed to that sort of thing don’t get picked for economic advisors, because they tend to tell the President not to do things. Boehner should look to the Mises Institute if he wants people who oppose the “stimulus,” but they probbly aren’t very popular in most Republican circles because their top policy position isn’t “kill ragheads and screw everything else!”

  6. CParis Says:

@Wisconsin Reader – I couldn’t agree more! As a taxpayer from a state that usually is #49 or 50 in terms of return on taxes paid to the federal coffers, I’m tired of subsidizing states that refuse to pay to properly educate their students, provide proper healthcare for their children, etc.

  7. brian Says:

There has got to be a better way!

  8. El Cid Says:

Why not just send Jonah Goldberg? He’s more Boehner’s speed.

Or just hire a team of clowns and a clown car, and just give them all name tags that say “Fancy Eckonomisst!” That’s good enough to convince most right wingers.

  9. joe from Lowell Says:

    No economists? That’s unpossible!

Just last night, a Republican pundit on MSNBC told a national audience that “government doesn’t create jobs. Economists will tell you that.”

Except, maybe, for the super-duper economists at the Mises Institute for the Study of Economics and Impersonating Geddy Lee.

*Sigh* You just need to take Econ 101.

  10. Rebecca Says:

The Cato Institute is publishing a list of 200 economists including nobel laureates who oppose the stimulus package. It’s common sense to not burden future generations by not only unnecessary but unhealthy spending.
