What’s the role, if any, of CDSs in the continuing financial mess (not the role they played in its onset), and if there is a continuing role, would it be possible and desirable to void them by legislation?
What is Bush going to do to fully cement his legacy as the Worst President Ever? It’s going to be tough to convince any states to secede in a week, so it’s got to be something new. Accidental nuclear detonation over New Jersey?
What are the prospects of Mandarin Chinese displacing English as the true “global language”? While there are many more Mandarin speakers than English speakers, can the relatively more complicated Mandarin overtake English as the language of commerce and diplomacy? It is my understanding that Mandarin is also much less adaptable English (i.e. via loanwords from other languages).
Bush is bad because he abandoned conservatism. At least, that’s what a few conservatives will argue. Andrew Sullivan certainly paints Bush as a man of the left any opportunity he gets. I think those arguments are rather weak. How do you respond to them?
What, exactly, is Dick Cheney shredding at this moment? Bonus Question: How many football stadiums could you fill with the ashes of his burnt, shredded documents?
What are the odds that there are any successful prosecutions on this front. Scott Horton over at Harper’s wrote a great piece two months ago, but I haven’t seen much else. Your thoughts?
You’ve previously expressed your belief in “pragmatism” as a political philosophy. I wonder whether you think the pressing social, economic, and security problems we’re currently facing will require a more explicit articulation of political ideals, moral principles, and their implications than the “whatever works best” theory of pragmatism. In other words: should we argue against torture because torture doesn’t work, or should we argue against torture because of a certain conception of human dignity; should we argue for universal healthcare because it will lower the cost of doing business and improve the economy or because healthcare is a human right? I understand the answer might be a “both and” rather than an “either or.” But in your writing you seem to emphasize utility and practicality over more morally informed notions of political value. Do you think there’s a place for certain foundational ideals in progressivism today, or should we stick to tangible insights about efficiency and marginal improvement in the field of social cooperation?
What blogs should I be reading to get a handle on the financial crisis? Should I be moving my money into the stock market or should I use it to compost my potatoes?
What do you think about federalizing the electric grid? The state utility regulators are already rankling over this prospect, but it would seem necessary in full or in part to ensure long-term renewable energy growth. In the absence of a smart grid, can renewables growth continue? Can subsidies make up for the lack of infrastructure?
I’m not sure if the argument is that Bush is a man-of-the-left, just that he isn’t a “traditional” conservative. This argument is extremely powerful: it allows conservatives to be conservatives without being associated with Republicanism (and it’s single-handedly allowed an elderly representative to become a fiery libertarian revolutionary). If conservatives don’t want to associate themselves with executive power now that Obama’s in power, want to preach about fiscal sanity, and want to oppose imperialism now that Bush has proved a failure, I don’t care about their motivations as long as the opposing party is less apocalyptic opposing party.
Responding to argument, though, there is some nuance. Lots of foreign policy neocons are domestic liberals (”big government everywhere!”), and lots of Bush’s supposed big government programs are market-based (NCLB) or business-friendly (Medicare reform). On their face, these things do a whole lot more than drown government in a bathtub, as old-school Conservaties would like.
Was the Bush presidency (and its policies/beliefs/methods) a ‘high water mark’ to where the US has been going for a while – and we now back away from the edge, or was it the confirmation of a new paradigm of us/them that will continue.
Or to put it a different way: will I be able to talk on any substantive issue ever again with my conservative friends?
Bush is bad because he abandoned conservatism. At least, that’s what a few conservatives will argue. Andrew Sullivan certainly paints Bush as a man of the left any opportunity he gets.
Truly, conservatives never favored what Bush advocated–privatizing Social Security, breaking the bank on national defense, deregulation and union-busting, favoring industry over the environment, etc–until Bush came along.
And after Bush, conservatives will no doubt abandon those Bushist policies.
Here’s my question for discussion: what’s with Burger King running advertisements against tipping? I don’t tip at chain fast food joints, though I have heard about people with the impulse to do so. Is the idea that this advertising will attract customers who are offended by the tip jars at less-ubiquitous restaurants? Is it because the stress of not knowing whether to tip ruins that fast food experience?
Frankly, I’m wondering how much more he can screw up with just eight more days to go. Every time I think that there’s nothing further he can do to harm the country, I discover that I have, once again, “misunderestimated” him.
One thing I’m wondering about Gaza. If at some point in the future, Egypt goes more democratic and the Muslim Brotherhood gains a role in the government, does a substantially better relationship between Palestinians in Gaza and Egypt become possible?
As you’ve shown via links, the West Bank part of a three state solution is totally unworkable. However, the problems with perhaps getting some sort of protectorate status for Gaza seem to largely center around Mubarak (or any likely dictatorial successor).
That said, even with a more democratic Egypt there’d still be Palestinian nationalism and Egyptian fears of poor potentially radical refugees, so maybe things don’t change. Also there’s the question of Israel worries about military supplies to Gaza. Finally, I think there’s still Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, so merely being more democratic doesn’t guarantee change.
Am I the only one who has decided to not have any more children (thus stopping at one) b/c Bush and his cronies have created such financial turmoil that I am in fear for my job, my retirement savings, and their college education?
As one of the only realistic carbon sequestration schemes that works is the large scale planting of trees, is there a hint of an Obama Forestry policy that encourages this?
And one problem in rural America is the limited amount of affordable rental housing. Anything there with the incoming Admin?
Am I the only one who has decided to not have any more children (thus stopping at one) b/c Bush and his cronies have created such financial turmoil that I am in fear for my job, my retirement savings, and their college education?
You neglect the possible benefits of having a large clan of grown children in a post-apocalyptic dystoria.
What’s the role, if any, of CDSs in the continuing financial mess (not the role they played in its onset), and if there is a continuing role, would it be possible and desirable to void them by legislation?
A better idea would be to standardize the contracts and trade them on an exchange. If they’re so risky that you couldn’t find or create an exchange willing to take the risk, then clamp down on them hard. Easiest thing would be to raise the margin requirements through the roof.
Have you heard anything about how likely it is that the Bush tax cuts will be repealed for the ‘wealthiest Americans?’
Assuming the climate is not right for the return to 39.6% right now, what is the risk, in your view that nothing gets done before the mid-term elections, the Democratics get hammered in the mid-terms and suddenly the tax code changes are off the table and nothing gets done?
(i.e. I suppose we return to the pre-Bush system sans things like Obama’s “Credit for Making Work Pay” etc.)
Wouldn’t this be a good time to raise Capital Gains taxes? Almost nobody has any capital gains right now so raising them won’t undermine the stimulus. It might help stimulate demand since it would reduce the benefit of saving.
When President Bush said during his last news conference that:
“I view those who get angry and yell and say bad things and, you know, all that kind of stuff, it’s just a very few people in the country. I don’t know why they get angry. I don’t know why they get hostile. It’s not the first time, however, in history that people have expressed themselves in sometimes undignified ways”
was he referring to me?
If so , could you tell him that I said he could suck my cock?
Have I made my discussion of this issue that no one else is telling the truth about idiot- and sockpuppet-proof enough?
By putting it on your crackwhores’ brothel of a site, you’ve certainly ensured that no-one will give a streaming, stinking shit about it.
Me, I’m wondering when the pardons will appear. That’s the only thing left to anticipate, and it’s sort of like the inverse of an awards ceremony. Will there be blanket pardons? Will it just cover people who were indicted or convicted, or extend to all manner of Bush-league criminals?
On that note, I’m wondering how embarrassed Blair and Howard will look at the gong ceremony tomorrow. Especially Blair, who’s also finally collecting his Congressional Gold Medal nearly six years after it was awarded, because it would have been embarrassing for him to do so any time sooner.
Could you comment on this article (”The Founders’ Great Mistake”) from the January/Feburary issue of the Atlantic? The premise is that many of the abuses of executive power of the Bush Junior (and previous) administration(s) can be traced to the flaws in the design of the presidency itself, and proposes some constitutional reforms to fix them. It just seem to be an interesting issue to me that doesn’t get a lot of attention.
Wouldn’t this be a good time to raise Capital Gains taxes? Almost nobody has any capital gains right now so raising them won’t undermine the stimulus. It might help stimulate demand since it would reduce the benefit of saving.
I dunno Craig. I’m for making capital gains part of income (exempting the first 100,000 tax on inheritance, for the real farmers and most Amercians), but are there gonna be many capital gains reported this dark year?
Why is it that the Canadian banking system has been left virtually unscathed (except for somewhat reduced profit margins), while the American and European ones are in ruins?
(Sidenote: If anything, Canadian banks are even larger, relative to the Canadian economy, than were the bailed-out US institutions. Banking is dominated by the “Big 5″ (Royal Bank, Bank of Montral, TD Canada Trust, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Scotiabank) plus the Desjardins Credit Union and the National Bank.)
It is often said that lack of infrastructure — especially in the field of telecoms — can be an advantage, because it permits countries to ’skip generations’. India, for instance, is jumping straight to mobile/cellular phones and optic fibers.
Similarly, could America’s lack of high-speed rail not be used to its advantage by skipping straight to Maglev rail without having invested in high-speed rail first? Over long distances, Maglev is as fast as passenger aircraft (minus check in/security), thus providing a viable alternative for flyers, helping the environment and permitting more people to be transported at plane speeds; the fact only the part of the track near a train needs to be electrified further boosts the environmental impact; and it only costs about the same as building an 8-lane freeway.
Imagine something like that along the Eastern Seaboard. Washington to Boston in three and a bit hours would make that megalopolis a genuine single economic entity, massively boosting economic activity for decades to come.
“What’s real are three things. One—the recession. Two—the misallocation of resources. Last—the skills mismatch”
I agree, and endorse the concept that we need more fundamental changes than just “jump starting the economy,” which is currently based on a non-sustainable level of hyper- consumption. So we are in a conundrum it seems to me. On the one hand, we have to increase demand drastically to keep our non-sutainable economy from tanking. On the other, for the sake of our planet we cannot restore the status quo ante. We need to move on to a more collective value driven society, that somehow includes crafting a harmonious balance between the “misallocation of resources” and the “skills mismatch,” which is a huge challenge in and of itself. How are we going to do that? Further, I don’t see that this is being thought through by Obama policymakers. Or am I missing something?
Will Obama, Pelosi, and Reid be clever enough to carve off a workable number of GOP votes for upcoming legislation on their own, or will they feel obligated to kiss Boehner’s and McConnell’s okoles?
If they do feel consistently obligated, is it too late to contest my credit card charges to their campaigns?
On a trivial note: when will the truth about 24AheadDotCom’s citizenship come out? When it does, how soon can we deport him?
Upthread, Andrew asked: What, exactly, is Dick Cheney shredding at this moment? Bonus Question: How many football stadiums could you fill with the ashes of his burnt, shredded documents?
Yep, that’s what I’m wondering about too, as we approach Bush’s last week.
I salute 24AheadDotCom for his tireless efforts, bringing this issue the attention it deserves. I certainly hope that he and others on the right will continue to channel their energy into pursuing this and other matters of like importance to our nation as we face the challenges that lie ahead.
Is it just me or does DC have a lot of really hot public officials? (At least hot compared to most senior public officials.) Chief Lanier is hot, Superintendent Rhee is hot, and my girlfriend says Mayor Fenty is hot. Seriously, when is the last time you saw a hot chief of police?
I’m a little late to this thread but here is what I would like to know.
How are we going to judge success with the current economic crisis? The w administration was ripped (rightly) for not setting clear and consistent benchmarks for evaluating Iraq. The repubs will call any outcome a failure unless there are certain goals outlined before hand.
Another thing… What is the probability of success for the BO plan? Is it 5%, 50/50 or 75%? Are we on the deck of the Titanic hoping that a sailor can patch the hole? I don’t know but would sure like to.
To Mr. Bill @ 31, In my many years in the northeast forests of the United States. I have come to the conclusion through copious observation that they pretty much plant themselves.
My biggest concern right now with the recession is how it will impact public education in this country, most notably in my town. I live is a very well-to-do town in Massachusetts (home town of the governor) and we are on the verge of laying off 40 teachers and possibly closing 1 of our 4 newly refurbed (one completely new) elementary schools. We moved here b/c of the schools and now that is in jeopardy.
If we are having these struggles in MA, I can only imagine what is happening elsewhere in the country.
I posted this on an Israel thread a few days ago, but I’m curious what you think of the domestic political angle of the Israeli decisions to go into Gaza. Specifically, Say the situation, from the perspective of Barak/Olmert was as follows.
Two choices:
1. Deal with Hamas rockets by doing nothing or making further concessions (e.g. closing more settlements), and see popularity dwindle and Likud win a strong mandate in parliamentary elections, leading to belligerent rhetoric and frequent use of military force likely including aggression against Iran and other policies that are very destructive in the long-run.
2. Take a hard-line and use military force against Hamas, increasing domestic popularity to the point that sustaining a Kadima/Labor government becomes possible. While additional damage is done to PA-Israeli relations and global opinion, post-military operation domestic popularity gives Olmert/Barak the domestic political breathing space to reinitiate the peace process in earnest, leading to a higher chance of peace in the near term.
When you include the domestic political calculus, shouldn’t even a hardcore member of J street support choice #2 as the minimax decision in this situation?

One more thing: how many shoes tossed over the fence would it take to cover the north lawn of the White House?

Hi,
To synopsize one of your recent posts:
Thanks.

January 12th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Upthread, Andrew asked: What, exactly, is Dick Cheney shredding at this moment? Bonus Question: How many football stadiums could you fill with the ashes of his burnt, shredded documents?
Yep, that’s what I’m wondering about too, as we approach Bush’s last week.

I’m wondering if Obama will really support D.C. Statehood or that “Change in Washington” was just campaign rhetoric.
January 12th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Matthew,
My biggest concern right now with the recession is how it will impact public education in this country, most notably in my town.

“I am a physician. When I was in active practice I was making an excellent income.
I never had to worry about the cost of my medications.
Once I retired my income dropped and I also had to buy all of my ever increasing list of medications.
As the cost of medications was a substantial part of my family’s budget, I started searching for Online certified
pharmacies that have lower prices. After investigating numerous pharmacies in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Europe:
Universal Drug Store emerged as the undisputed champion. When I started dealing with UDS I found that ordering
medication was simple and it is easy to get real people to answer your questions and they are knowledgeable and courteous.
The medications I receive from UDS are in exactly the same factory packages as what I used to buy at my local pharmacy.”
