Any longitudinal info handy on how family/child-related tax deductions have shrunk over the years (besides the mortgage deduction, which I’ve never yet enjoyed)? Seems like my kids are worth about five bucks and change when it comes to filing my 1040. Was it ever thus and I’m just a wanking whiner, or has there indeed been a deep secular erosion in tax kindnesses to those of us who are raising our future Social Security funders? I really enjoy all your “I don’t know economics but I write about it a lot anyway” posts on urban issues. I’m a big fan of congestion pricing, mass transit, performance parking and other urbanist recommendations. My question is tangentially related.
As a former New Yorker, do you have any insights as to why NYC maintains a command economy for taxi service? I understand the desire to have some kind of licensing system and to protect consumers and especially tourists from egregious rip-offs. What I don’t understand is why they have decided the best way to accomplish this is to have the city government arbitrarily set the supply, prices, and wages for the entire industry.

As Greenwald duly notes, why does our government find it necessary to overtly back, with a non-binding resolution, those we so obviously overtly back in the first place? It’s like how we (and by we, I mean foolish Congressional hawks) attempted to declare the Quds special forces of the Iranian Supreme Leader’s a terrorist organization. It’s like, well, no shit. I’d like to know the extent to which Hamas controls the rocket attacks from Gaza. A related question is could Hamas completely and entirely stop those attacks if they chose to?
I want facts, not bullshit Israeli propaganda.
The answer to this question would be incredibly helpful, at least in my mind, in analyzing both the more abstract questions about proportionality and the practical question about the sustainability of a cease-fire acceptable to Israel.

Hi Matt- I’ve got a question about our long-term vision in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It has become the accepted wisdom (appropriately so, in my opinion) that the US financing, training, and arming of Islamist fighters in Afghanistan to defeat the Soviets really came back to hurt us in the personage of bin Laden and numerous others. This “blowback” is also evident in Pakistan, where groups like LeT, created by the ISI to stir up trouble in Kashmir, have now turned on their former masters.
Meanwhile, in Iraq we are training, paying (and possibly arming, I’m not sure) the “Sons of Iraq” and other militias. General Petraeus recently hinted that the new strategy in Afghanistan might follow a similar course.
Is this shortsightedness on our part? Is there a real chance that in 10 or 15 years we will consider the “Sons of Iraq” to be terrorists? Or have we learned our lesson, and doing something differently this time around?
This has puzzled me for awhile, and nobody seems to be talking about it, so please share your thoughts.

Here is a question that has been bugging me for a while, but I am yet to find a solid answer to: Why are people more psychologically comfortable riding rail transit than they are riding buses? Why do people in Washington walk out of their way to get to and from Metro stations when a bus route might provide a more direct route?

I re-watched the Matrix trilogy recently and remembered/realized that, at the end of the third movie, a peace is established between Zion and the machines even knowing the machines are STILL harvesting humans and using them to power themselves. Do you find this peace to be acceptable or do you think Zion needs to resume its efforts to free humanity from the machines?
Also, you’ve expressed your thoughts on drug policy before, but I don’t recall you ever stating your position on legalization/decriminalization on any particular illegal drugs. I’m assuming you think marijuana should be legalized, medical marijuana at least, but what drugs – if any – should generally be illegal?
Generally speaking, people oppose the BCS and want a playoff established. I’m all for the former. But wouldn’t a playoff replicate the problems with the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament at an even MORE unfair rate? There’s no way of really determining which 8 dates are most deserving to compete for a title. Why do people feel it’s absolutely necessary to objectively ascertain who a champion is? What’s wrong with the old tradition of having particular conference champions play each other in traditional bowl games? Why can’t people just enjoy the sport and not worry about winning an ultimate and singular award?

Non-sexual, non-troll request: How are freshman moderate/Blue Dog vs. liberal Dems faring in committee assignments — traditionally a leading indicator of how sincerely the party wants/expects to hold onto the seat?
I noticed that Tom Periello, upset winner over Virgil Goode in VA’s 5th district, possibly the most vulnerable freshman among House Dems, was assigned to Transportation & Infrastructure Committee — a seemingly odd fit for a congressman from a rural Southern district with a bunch of depressed former mill towns, and someone with a background in international health and human services.
Are other freshmen being shunted to ill-fitting committees because the Dems’ bench is now too deep? Implications for 2010?

There is a well-established cultural and social cachet associated with rail and an outright stigma associated with the bus. It’s as simple as that, and it’s a problem planners deal with on a daily basis. You can only sex up a bus so much. Some European cities (also Curitiba, Brazil) have experimented with making buses cosmetically similar to trains.

They are wayyyy more dependable in a variety of ways, you can read the sign telling in how many minutes the next one is coming, and you feel a lot safer standing around at a well-lit metro stop than a lot of bus stops in the city.

I ride both a bus and a subway on my daily commute, and I assure you that the subway is more comfortable, even though the bus rides on its own busway. It is much easier for me to either read or sleep on the train. Also, sometimes I will get mild motion sickness on the bus. I used to ride a bus that rode in mixed-flow traffic (i.e., it didn’t have a busway), and there was a LOT of lurching back and forth, making it basically impossible to read for more than a very brief period of time without getting motion sickness.
Also, with a rail line, there is an assurance that one knows where it’s going. Bus routes are much less obvious. This is a barrier to new users; everyday bus users will know exactly where their line goes, but if they need to go somewhere out of the ordinary it will require some research.

Net Neutrality…are there any good arguments against it? I hear arguments that with it in place, telcos won’t have the money to upgrade their networks and other such things. But this, and all other arguments I hear against it, seem to be variations on telcos wanting more money, or specifically saying that it is good for consumers if telcos have more money, something along those lines.
Also, what can we expect in the near future from Congress wrt it?

Something that the US has a lot of now that it didn’t in the 30’s is rampant industrial pollution.
I think the stimulus bill should shovel large sums of money toward EPA to expedite Superfund cleanups.
Making ethanol from corn may be dumb. Making ethanol from cellulose may well be worth investing in. And we have a really great source of cellulose that’s basically free — the state and national forests that are choking on massive fuel loads due to decades of excessive fire suppression. And since we have a whole bunch of people unemployed, we now have the work force to reconstitute the CCC and get them clearing out the low brush, dead trees and invasive species that are killing our forests.

What are the substantive arguments in favor of the business related tax breaks Obama is proposing in the stimulus bill? I understand that folks seem to think they are simply part of his plan to garner massive bipartisan support for the bill, but I’m not sure we should have such a cynical view. The problem is, so far they have made no effort to justify on the merits their business tax proposals. I’m thinking here primarily about the net operating loss carry back proposals. To me, it’s not enough to simply say “it creates jobs.” Does anyone know anything about the NOL carry back provisions or the tax credit for hiring or retaining workers? I’d love to know more but not sure where to look…

Subway trains typically run more often than buses, so there’s less of a wait, and less of a reliance on a schedule. Also, you can usually wait in an heated station for a train, but waiting for the bus is often done in the cold. Finally — not that this is applicable so much to short trips — but for inter-city service, trains at least seem safer (I suspect buses are a statistically more dangerous way to travel, but I’m too tired at the moment to google).

The Ivy League (and I believe MIT and maybe one or two other schools) agree not to award athletic scholarships. In fact I’m fairly certain they’ve agreed not to award merit scholarships of any sort. Periodically, schools are caught cheating on this agreement; Brown was stripped of its 1999 Ivy League football title for violating recruiting rules. It’s very seriously enforced for reasons I’m not sure I understand.
The Ivy Group Agreement was signed in 1954.

So we all know Nixon’s crimes pale in comparison to Bush’s…yet Nixon was ultimately forced to resign…I’d like to know, what are the factors that allowed the Bush administration to get away with what it did without repercussion…I can throw a couple out there
1)The GOP was in control for most of Bush’s Presidency and refused its oversight role because Republicans don’t tell on other Republicans
2)The Threat of terrorism scares enough Americans that they would honestly prefer not to know what goes on behind close doors…in fact, they probably believe it is best for our security if these methods are used from time to time
3)Democrats, fear of looking weak on terrorism and having just as many ties to the military industrial complex, refused its oversight role as well
4)Most of our media institutions suck

What should we make of James Howard Kuntsler and the other apocalyptic prophets of peak oil? I read his blog for my weekly dose of pessimism, but I never see the MSM evaluate his claims and predictions. On the one hand you have this persuasive author claiming that global civilization is due to break down five minutes from now; on the other you have the New York Times, for instance, ignoring him. So is he a crank or not, Matt?

CAP has an official position that he’s a nice guy. During the height of the East Timorese genocide, death squads were leaving churches full of torn up bodies and raping nuns and he was ordered by the Clinton administration to demand an end to it. Instead the wire records show that he said nothing and offered the Indonesians additional aid. When this was found out, he was ordered back to Indonesia to deliver the original message: he didn’t say a word and offered specific support for a more notorious death squad unit.
Does he have something on John Podesta? Why is he back?

Actually Perriello specifically requested Transportation and Infrastructure. He’ll be able to help bring significant jobs and development to his district from that assignment due in part to the Obama plan to improve infrastructure. This committee assignment will help him serve his district, and help him get reelected.

Well, it’s also worth noting that the crimes Nixon got away with were far greater than the ones he got nailed on. By the time the relatively trivial Watergate scandal came around, Nixon was already guilty of war crimes on a massive scale. No one really cared about that though. Except the families of all the dead Asians.

The Curitiba system was designed for efficiency, and it used buses because they are a lot cheaper than trains. Curitiba’s raised bus platforms may be reminiscent of rail stations, but that’s just common sense at work: the commuters pay their fare and line up in the platform before the bus arrives, so they don’t slow the system down by paying when the bus gets there.
The irony of Lerner’s work in Curitiba is that the more well-designed and pleasant he made the city, the more internal migrants it attracted, and those migrants brought pollution and mess to the city’s periphery.

While everyone has been gushing over the Cass Sunstein pick, what are your thoughts on some of his other picks, like Nancy Killefer – McKinsey consulting – for Chief Performance Officer and (rumored) Steve Rattner – Quadrangle Group – for Car Czar? I know the past administration set the bar pretty low, but Obama seems to be picking a lot of foxes to guard hen houses.
Related, do you think the Obama people are actually filling any jobs from the the “Apply for a Job” database on Change.gov? Is it legitimately being used, a way for them to better control the mid and low level appointments that are usually made further down, just another database for them to milk, a pr move, or something else?

The fact that you would want to appoint Sarah Palin undersecretary for Robot Affairs shows just how unserious you are about Human/Robot relations, Peter K. I would appoint R. Nate Silver, a robot who humans are already familiar with and who would be a friend to the administration as well.

I’m interested in your thoughts regarding the wisdom and political viability of “Cap-and-Dividend.” Obama is going to have to spend political capital to get both the stimulus and health care through Congress. He is also going to have to spend political capital on trying to get the most optimal Cap-and-Trade bill through (one with 100% auctions, with the proceeds going to fund alternative energy, etc.), which would require a lot of debate and eventually get watered down and include some giveaways to industry. Would it be more prudent to try instead to get a large amount of alternative energy spending as part of the stimulus bill and then pass a very simple Cap-and-Dividend bill, with 100% auction but the funds going to a lump sum rebate to all citizens? This would have an advantage in that it is much simpler both in legislative form (less likely to get watered down) and easier to understand by the general public (greater public support in passage, resulting in spending less political capital that could be used for the stimulus and health care). Would this be both good policy and good politics?

Here is my question and this is probably a simple answer I just can’t think of.
In the post about rising rent rates, Matt said rising rent was bad for the EXACT REASON conservatives say raising taxes is bad. How can a liberal critique that view and then hold it to be prima facie truth on another issue?

Does Obama have to appoint US citizens to cabinet (or sub-cabinet) level positions? I know that this is kind of an oddball question, but with the appointment of Adm. Dennis Blair as the DNI, I keep seeing “Blair” and thinking Tony. I’m assuming that Kissinger was naturalized, but I can’t think of any foreign nationals ever serving in a cabinet.
