Rush Holt has a better record of judgment on intelligence and national security issues than does Dianne Feinstein, so naturally nobody regards his views as “serious,” but he likes Leon Panetta just fine:
“Having served in Congress in the wake of Watergate and the domestic surveillance abuses that surfaced during the 1970s, Mr. Panetta understands how a democratic government should operate. He also demonstrated skill in running the Office of Management and Budget and as Chief of Staff under President Clinton. We need the CIA to collect reliable, actionable intelligence in ways that respect American values and honor the Constitution. Mr. Panetta’s background and reputation indicate he would serve the intelligence community, the President, and the country well.”

You gotta like a Republican guy who resigned from a Nixon administration’s civil rights position in protest of Nixon’s Southern Strategy promotion of a segregationist judge, and who then becomes a Democrat. The Anti-Southern Strategy? The Southern Anti-Strategy?
Yeah, enough with the crocodile tears from the Bush crime enabling undynamic duo of Feinstein and Rockefeller. I don’t give a sh*t what either of them think, except that their opinions have sort of a Bill Kristol property to them — whatever they say, reality is amazingly opposite.

I will add my own speculation about the Rockefeller and Feinstein objection to Panetta’s appointment. Contrary to the comments to this blog, it most likely has nothing to do with skeletons in the closet, the Jewish lobby, hurt feelings for not being consulted, and so on. Rather, it is Panetta’s strengths that he will bring to the position. He is exceptionally smart, has a political base of his own, and has enough wealth not to be conflicted in the job. Panetta will not be dependent on Rockefeller, Feinstein, or anybody else in Congress for authority. In other words, he will be an independent actor. Is that good or bad? We will see.

I have a suspicion that the negative comments by Senator Feinstein may have more to do with some personal conflicts between her and Mr. Panetta then difference over policy, vis Nancy Pelosi vs Jane Harmon.

Maybe, SLC, but Feinstein isn’t out there alone. Rockefellar and Reid have made similar noises, which makes me think this is more than a personal fued.
