Grayson on Rush

225px_alan_grayson_1.jpg

This is a bit old, but I thought I’d share with everyone the views of Rep. Alan Grayson (a Democrat from the Orlando area) on Rush Limbaugh:

Alan Grayson, the outspoken member from Orlando, as usual, wasn’t mincing words: “Rush Limbaugh is a has-been hypocrite loser, who craves attention. His right-wing lunacy sounds like Mikhail Gorbachev, extolling the virtues of communism. Limbaugh actually was more lucid when he was a drug addict. If America ever did 1% of what he wanted us to do, then we’d all need pain killers.”

Arguably, the interests of any given progressive politician are better served by trying to appease the right-wing media apparatus than by trying to take it on. But the movement as a whole vitally needs leaders who are willing to try to diminish the influence of those centers of power.

Limbaugh actually was more lucid when he was a drug addict

    Line of the day!

  2. Stefan Says:

OK, Grayson’s getting a campaign donation for that. Good for him.

  3. M. Showperson Says:

Grayson’s insane. Everyone here in the district knows it. Homeboy has a Delorean, for goodness’ sake.

  4. stefan Says:

So now were slamming Gorbachev? Gorbachev always struck me as pretty sane.

  5. BP Says:

“Rush Limbaugh is a has-been hypocrite loser, who craves attention.”

Yes…and Rep. Grayson is giving him that attention…and Rush is eating it up

  6. scythia Says:

So now were slamming Gorbachev? Gorbachev always struck me as pretty sane.

Cognitive dissonance. People who listen to Limbaugh hate(d) the Soviet Union. Create an metaphor that merges their leader with their enemy and watch their heads pop.

Like, think of how you react to “Liberal Fascism.” Same principle.

    Homeboy has a Delorean

    That’s so ill.

  7. Danton Says:

“Arguably, the interests of any given progressive politician are better served by trying to appease the right-wing media apparatus than by trying to take it on.”

Well, yes, one could argue this, but why? Why would one want to argue that it’s best to appease a nimrod like Limbaugh or Sean Hannity? When I read the Grayson quote a few days ago, I thought “This guy’s got a spine.” And I liked the line Obama delivered a few days back about watching Republicans bash him on Fox News: “I will watch you on Fox News and I will feel very bad about myself.” Again, a spine, and wrapped in wonderful irony.

  8. Why oh why Says:

That’s some nice trash talk right there.

  9. Tyro Says:

I suspect that there’s a generation of Democratic politicians who genuinely fear Rush and the right-wing talking points machine and a more recent generation of Democrats who is tired of their bullshit and doesn’t fear them. Certainly Grayson reflects none of the “learned helplessness” I’ve come to expect from Democrats who have to deal with Republican “personalities.”

  10. mark Says:

One of the senators from Minnesota has said some pretty forceful things about Rush, too.

  11. Grand Moff Texan Says:

Some say that Rush Limbaugh fucks small children in the Dominican Republic and still needs a bottle of someone else’s viagra to get it up.

He’s the perfect metaphor for the Republican party.
    .

  12. Client #11 Says:

Holy shit, never even heard of the guy but now I have a new favorite congressman.

  13. Francisco The Man Says:

I was actually going to write “ditto” in relation to Stefan’s campaign contribution post. The I remembered who else uses that word.

  14. Notorious P.A.T. Says:

So now were slamming Gorbachev? Gorbachev always struck me as pretty sane.

Yes, but for Gorbachev (or anyone else) to go around saying what a great system Communism is when it has been empirically discredited makes one sound delusional. . . like Rush Limbaugh.

  15. Dave Says:

Homeboy has a Delorean, for goodness’ sake.

    Doc Brown?

  16. Trollhattan Says:

Has he made it to Colbert’s board yet? He needs to; very quote-worthy fellow.

I especially like that’s he’s from the state that houses Rush’s bunker.

  17. stefan Says:

So now were slamming Gorbachev? Gorbachev always struck me as pretty sane.

Yes, but for Gorbachev (or anyone else) to go around saying what a great system Communism is when it has been empirically discredited makes one sound delusional. . . like Rush Limbaugh.

Do you have an example of Gorbachev doing this? As opposed to saying the the system that replaced communism is falling down on basic human needs, some even served better under communism? I don’t see why slamming Limbaugh is helped by making up stuff about Gorbachev, since I seriously doubt that Grayson has ever been exposed to any delusional Gorbachev rantings.

  18. calipygian Says:

Gorbachev’s explicit goal up until the MVD shot people down in the Baltics in 91 was to reform communism and save the Soviet Union. Gorbachev believed he could until after the rioting in the Baltic states.

  19. anonymiss Says:

Keep in mind that Rush Limbaugh is a guy who was fired from football color commentary because he was offensive without being substantive.

Let me say that again. The man was too rude and too intellectually shallow to meet the standards of professional football.

It’s beyond insane that the Wall Street Journal is printing him and that any reporter thinks the Speaker of the House, third in line to the Presidency, should deign to offer a response to anything he says.

Major league FOOTBALL thought he wasn’t worth listening to. This should tell us something.

  20. Brad Says:

Finally! One of our elected congressmen is standing up to an American citizen who is voicing his opinions on the radio! And God knows dissent is no longer the highest form of patriotism! Fuck yeah! That guy’s the man! High five everyone!

  21. DaveinHackensack Says:

“Rush is urging the Republicans to pursue an extremist dead-end path.”

Yeah, that’s exactly what he said in his op/ed in today’s WSJ. There’s legitimate factual stuff to hammer Rush with — e.g., the idea that a capital gains tax cut would have any stimulative effect right now when there’s no shortage of capital losses to offset any gains — so why improvise? Read what he wrote and attack something he actually said.

“Why would one want to argue that it’s best to appease a nimrod like Limbaugh or Sean Hannity?”

That comparison isn’t fair to Rush. Hannity is a tool and a fake — a Irish Catholic Long Islander who pretends that he’s got Nashville running through his veins.

“Major league FOOTBALL thought he wasn’t worth listening to.”

Major league Football didn’t fire him, ABC’s Monday Night Football did. Rush goes to NFL games in person all the time, often invited by owners.

  22. 24AheadDotCom Says:

But the movement as a whole vitally needs leaders who are willing to try to diminish the influence of those centers of power.

MattY’s thinking abilities shine through again. Everything in Grayson’s comment was simply a childish ad hom. Much of the other criticism of Rush is actually a distortion of what he said, such as this BHO smear.

Is MattY even capable of understanding the difference between a valid and invalid argument? Based on reading him for years, I’m beginning to think he simply doesn’t have the capacity to do so.

  23. JonF Says:

rE: Arguably, the interests of any given progressive politician are better served by trying to appease the right-wing media apparatus than by trying to take it on.

Huh? Progressive politics is better served by having liberal politicians kiss Rush Limbaugh’s ample behind? You have GOT to be kidding! Or since you said the larger rightwing media, I can’t imagine any benefit from trying to appease the NRO crowd, the Weekly Standard, the CBN or even the Wall Street Journal. The rightwing is slowly drifting off into the fever swamps– why not just let them go and stop acting like they are respectable.

  24. Raymond Says:

A lot of my friends worked on Mr. Grayson’s campaign and say he’s a really great guy. The fact that he and Rep. Kosmas kicked the crap out of Tom Feeney and RIc Keller (two of the worst members of congress, especially Feeney) makes me proud to live in Orlando.

  25. Swervus Says:

I hate it when politicians try to talk trash, usually because they are so bad at it that people like Rush or Imus turn around and jam their stupid little quote right up their asses and get the added publicity of defenestrating an elected official live on the airwaves.

This guy, on the other hand went straight for the jugular and I think it will stick. That line about being more lucid when he was a druggie? Tight.

Don’t talk the trash if you suck at it. This guy should keep going, nothing like shooting down sacred cows especially when they are so slow and fat like Rush.

  26. Jasper Says:

Limbaugh actually was more lucid when he was a drug addict. If America ever did 1% of what he wanted us to do, then we’d all need pain killers.

Brilliant line. Almost as caustic as Matt’s jeremiad against Mike Pence. Good stuff!

  27. calipygian Says:

The beauty of the line is that Republicans and Rush cant combat it without bringing up the incontravertible fact that Rush IS a drug addict.

Next up – predicting that when the State Troopers finally bust in on Rush, the only question left to be answered is: live boys, dead girls or both and in what quantities.

  28. Danton Says:

That comparison isn’t fair to Rush. Hannity is a tool and a fake — a Irish Catholic Long Islander who pretends that he’s got Nashville running through his veins.

Hey, DaveinHackensack, you’re kidding, right? “Fair” and “Rush Limbaugh” are concepts that really don’t connect.

  29. BillyBob Says:

Well that certainly was a mindless, hateful screed that does nothing to improve the level of discourse nor offer anything of intellectual substance. Not surprising, considering that Matt Stoller works for this guy now.

  30. Nara Says:

We need someone like Grayson on the right. I voted for McCain and hoped that he would take the party away from the big fat idiots (Rush, Jonah and Sean) and a-holes like Coulter & O’Reily. With Obama’s win the crazies are even in more control of the Republican party.

  31. johnnyk Says:

Nice to know the Repubs possess one tiny set of balls.
Maybe the boil on Rush’s ass was acting up.
Or was it a viagra headache?

  32. MNPundit Says:

Remember MY, Matt Stoller is on his staff now. If his behavior gets more erratic you will know why.
