Gene Sperling Returns

item897103066.jpg

Gene Sperling, who headed up the National Economic Council in the Clinton administration after Robert Rubin left the job, willl be joining Timothy Geithner at the Treasury Department where he will “will advise on fiscal policy, including issues related to the annual budget, taxes and the domestic entitlement programs – Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security – whose growth is driving projections of long-term deficits.” It seems like an excellent choice to me. Geithner’s area of expertise is specifically in finance, but obviously these swathes of economic policy are hugely important and recruiting Sperling means there’ll be a real heavy-hitter on the treasury team. Among other things, Sperling’s been a CAP guy ‘lo these past several years so here’s a taste of his writing:

He also wrote a book, The Pro-Growth Progressive, which has a slightly annoying title and lots of great policy ideas.

    1) Does Sperling agree with the Congressional Budget Office’s forecast — issued last week — that shows massive unemployment in the next 3 years??

    Unemployment rate:
    2009 – 7.7
    2010 – 9.1
    2011 – 8.3
    2012 – 7.1

    2) While we’re at it, can you check with Podesta and ask why Barack Obama is such a pussy. We have George W Bush lying to the American people this week, as is his custom , saying that he is leaving office with his “head held high” and with a “good solid record”.

Why isn’t Obama –or at least some Democratic Senator — not pointing out the above projections plus the $6.5 Trillion in debt added by Bush and showing the American people how the Great Whore Bush has betrayed them?

  2. Doug Says:

And while we’re kvetching, let us note that only two of the three entitlements are the driving forces behind long-term concerns. Social Security is in good shape and does not belong on that list with the other two.

As Democrats said in 2005, our plan for Social Security is Social Security. Or as Speaker Pelosi put it, when asked when the Ds would present an alternative to Bush’s privatization plan, “Never. Does never work for you?”

His article on “The Wire” is very good, even if he does single out for praise one of the weakest bits of dialogue in the series (the season 5 exchange between Cutty and Dukie).

  5. Gary Farber Says:

Bonus points for writing about The Wire.
