I made The Spirit my Christmas movie choice. It’s a great technical achievement, but it’s been married to a bizarre storyline that ultimately makes this quite difficult to enjoy. The idea that this “should make comic modern-day fanboys happy, what with its dark undertones, its beat-it-to-a-pulp action and its sly winks at comic greats past and present” is true only if you have an exceedingly low opinion of fanboys. At the end of the day, technique is nice but the point of great technique is to bring a story to live. Mostly, this just left me wishing to see some more Sin City stories adapted for the screen.

Matt, Matt, Matt. Don’t you know that for those of us who truly appreciate feeelm, concerning ourselves with something so pedestrian as a “story” is beneath us?

WTF sly winks are they talking about? This was just a poorly adapted Eisner comic done all Sin City style. Not exactly a chocolate and peanut butter combination.
And just what the hell is so great about the technical achievement? This black, white, and red greenscreen stuff has been done before.

We can only hope this will kill the Frank Miller-directed Buck Rogers project. I shudder to think what Miller’s “I was a cutting edge comic book creator 15 years ago! What? It’s not 15 years ago and these aren’t comics?” appoach to filmmaking would produce. Gil Gerard and Erin Grey at least deserve a decent movie to make cameos in.

Not a popint of view likely to garner much sympathy from the son of a prominent scriptwriter.

I just wish that the few remaining Frank Miller obsessives either take the aforementioned advice and journey forth from 15 years ago, or somehow convince Hollywood that the weird success of the awful “300″ movie is no excuse to put Miller at the helm of anything. Really, is anyone nostalgic for ‘Robocop 2′? And do we really need the inspirer of Victor Davis Hansen’s sexual releases heading up major films?

I’m just hoping to god that they left Ebony White out of this adaptation…

“true only if you have an exceedingly low opinion of fanboys”
in other words, it’s true.

Yes, I keep hearing it was pretty terrible. Here’s what could have been:

Read somewhere that Marvel is adapting Philip K. Dick novels/short stories in comic book form. Really a great idea.

Imagine if the inspiration of V.D. Hansen’s sexual releases teamed up with the inspirations of K.J. Lopez’s and Jonah Goldberg’s sexual releases. We’d get 300 Passions of the Grandma’s Boy.

Who wouldn’t have a low opinion of fanboys after their glowing reception of The Dark Knight?

No Spirit for me. I still haven’t forgiven Frank Miller for Robocop 2…

For anyone not familiar with the original Spirit comics, I want to point out that this movie seems to have very little in common with Will Eisner’s utterly awesome comics, aside from a few character names and girls with great legs.

Well, I liked RoboCop 2 – 3, not so much.
And “The Spirit” has at least four hot babes in it, including the J-lo quality butt Eva Mendes and Noni Ryder-level boobs Scarlett Johansson.
AND it has Samuel L. Jackson as over the top as he ever gets! The Octopus? “I’ve got eight of everything!”
What’s not to like?
Meanwhile, the real problem is that a judge now says Fox owns “The Watchmen” movie rights, not Warner. Which means until there’s a settlement, we may never see that movie.

MBunge–
Miller wasn’t a cutting edge comic writer 15 years ago, he was a cutting edge comic writer 25 years ago. By 20 years ago, the medium had thoroughly absorbed everything he had to say and exaggerated it to the point of parody, and by 15 years ago the counter-reaction was in full force.

1990 – GIVE ME LIBERTY
1991-1992 – SIN CITY
“Cutting edge” may have been a bit much, but Miller remained a strong and vital creative force in comics into the early 90s.
