Matthew Blake of The Washington Independent has a nice appreciation of Henry Waxman’s tenure as top Democrat on the House Government Oversight Committee. Waxman was so effective in that role that a young person such as myself thought of him exclusively in those terms and I had no idea of his record as an effective legislator.

He looks incredibly like Dr. Tobias Funke in “Arrested Development.”

I’m absolutely astonished that a guy who looks like that could have a political career — and elected in L.A., no less. It makes me thing maybe voters aren’t as shallow as we all assume.

I am proud to say that Henry Waxman is my Congressman. Interestingly he is enormously popular, and people here speak with real pride in him and his accomplishments. His district encompasses a significant part of what most people would think of as essential LA, including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Brentwood, and Malibu. It is also gerrymandered into the West San Fernando Valley and the Eastern part of Ventura County. Now that I think of it, it pretty much has all of the stereotypical Hollywood liberals. The district is geographically huge.
As far as I can tell no one ever runs against him. I’ve lived in his district for 20 years and I’ve never seen him campaign or heard one word of opposition.

Since you like to tie everything into new urbanism, you should mention that he was instrumental in blocking the expansion of the LA subway west into the more affluent parts of town. Ever wonder why the purple line stops right before Hancock Park? Henry Waxman.

I’m an admirer of Rep. Waxman, but my god, does he look like a rodent!

True Gus, but he can write some intimidating demand letters I tell ya.

Well, the lack of term limits, fundraising advantages from rich donors, and a gerrymandered safe seat have this way of scaring away competition.
The reality is that there are lots of intelligent people in West Los Angeles who could probably be just as good a Congressman as Waxman is. But they will never get the chance.
Also, what Chris said. Blocking that subway probably outweighs everything else he has done in his career, at least on the local level.
He’s also a grandstander. He shed more heat than light on the tobacco companies in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

His leadership on the Gringotts’ Board of Governors was critical in maintaining the bank’s solvency when the wizard economy crashed.

I, for one, welcome our new mole overlords.

Oh, yeah, Waxman is a real sweetheart.
Just ask Sibel Edmonds.
