There’s often little real “news” during the holiday season, but at times that makes the newspapers more interesting since it frees up column inches for important topics that aren’t necessarily all that newsy. For example, when DC announced a big slumlord crackdown, that was “news.” But what every happened to it? Is it working? Debbie Cenziper takes a look in today’s Washington Post and comes up with the boring answer “sort of.” But sometimes the truth doesn’t make a good headline.

A more accurate title would be “Rent Control Fails Again.”
“Edward Knott, the owner of the building on 10th Place SE, was originally cited for 609 violations. The building was featured in a Washington Post article in March about landlords who had intentionally allowed properties to deteriorate to force tenants from rent-controlled apartments.”

A little history lesson here:
London, for most of the post-war period, had the same slum problems that American cities now face.
The only thing that solved this problem was the elimination of rent controls. When will American cities wake up and see the truth?

(Washington Post)
Nothing sums up the uselessness of rent controls as well as this sentence does. If there is a financial imperative for slums to remain slummy, then that imperative will be realised, stupid legislation or no.
