“Tanta” from CalculatedRisk, who’d emerged in a “only could have happened in the blogosphere” way to become a really major voice as the financial crisis grew, has passed away and will be fondly remembered not only by friends and family but by the many many of us who never met her or knew her at all except through her blogging.

I’d say she almost definitely is the first pseudonym to get a NYT obit…

Tanta worked long, hard and intelligently so that others could understand the very complex. There’s a lot of people going around saying that no one could foresee the financial mess. But there were many. It’s just that most of those people were unwilling to speak out of self-interest. Thank god for the few like Tanta.

What asl said. Tanta was about the purest example of the good a blogger can bring to the world–by doing the due diligence that “serious journalists” don’t, or won’t do. Requiescat in pace.

It’s a really sad loss on all fronts. She was one of the very few journalistic, for want of a better word, voices who actually added to public understanding during the credit crisis rather than spreading misinformation and confusion. As a financial journalist myself, people would often ask me where to go for good information. Calculated Risk was the first place I’d send them to.

She was outstanding, and that blog is still great without her. A very, very important blog, and her contributions were large.

She was also a very gifted writer, with a sharp and acerbic wit.
