Might we possibly persuade our conservative counterparts (the saner of them, anyway) to found a brand-new party and let the GOP go the way of the Whigs–with torture, xenophobia, homophobia, jingoism, bigotry, Christianism, anticonstitutionalism, Magic Negro complexes, and all the rest wrapped around its fetid corpse like so many balls and chains?

It would be incredibly useful, and genuinely helpful, to all Americans to engage in this sacred scapegoating exercise (exorcizing?). And conservatives could rebrand themselves in a 21st-century kind of way and lose that 19th-century,um, odor.

Just asking, in the spirit of New Year’s resolutions, new beginnings, and all that.

I already posted this on buses:

As a recent transplant to DC and newbie in all things public transit, one of the most infuriating things about trying to learn to use the buses was the constant need to check bus maps and schedules. As matt says, mostly locals use the buses because they are too confusing for tourists. Too often buses take winding paths through the city that take a while to memorize.

My idea to fix this is to utilize the (somewhat) grid system of district streets and just send buses straight east-west or north-south across the city on a loop. Say, all even numbered streets have buses heading south and then those buses go back north on odd numbered streets. Same thing going east-west. Then, I’d also put buses on a loop on the diagonal state-named boulevards. Instead of schedules, just say “every 4 minutes 7-9am and 4-7pm, every 10 minutes all day.” If you want a super-expensive system, matt’s “state-of-the-art thinking” digital signs could be even more specific to times, conditions, etc. This would be easy for new people and easier for locals if they are in an unfamiliar parts of town. I know this would need to be modified for some areas where the grid breaks down and to contend with one-way streets, but isn’t that easier than wasting 30 minutes on the WMATA route finder?

Please pick a Euro sports club to follow in 2009 and keep an eye on both their soccer and basketball teams. I think it will help your sports coverage to have less of a US-centric closed franchise model as your foundation. Sports clubs have public ownership a bit like the Green Bay Packers. There are also interesting foreign concepts like promotion/relegation, international leagues, domestic cups run simultaneously with seasons, transfer payments vs. free agency, and WAGs that you don’t see so much in American sports, at least before Jessica Simpson started dating Tony Romo.

I, sir, would like to now what your issue with the space program. And by issue, I mean, what exactly are you beefing about? NASA itself? Launching people into space in general? The ‘no waste’ argument of black boxing the solar system (already done, actually)? The argument that the money could be spent on other expensive science projects (known as ‘we could fund MY project with that money instead’ argument)?

What about the future of Long Term Care? What will happen as the Baby Boom ages and starts needing help getting dressed, bathing, cooking meals, etc.? Will they all go into nursing homes and other “care facilities” like their parents and grandparents did? Or, will they further the development of home-based personal care and innovations in assistive technology to maintain mobility and independence? And, what’s the right role for government in this? Is it part of the “health care” issue, or should it be considered separately?

Political Feasibility of an Infrastructure Bank?

There’s been a lot of talk and a few proposals floating around to form a permanent capital infrastructure bank of one kind or another. I think its a great idea and you probably do too. But how workable is it? I can see the GOP caving to a stimulus package. They got nothing else to propose besides the standard capital gains tax cut tomfoolery and they know it. But a long term infrastructure funding measure is something I imagine they’ll fight tooth and nail and would be easier to defeat or defang.

My request: something on Israeli boycotts/divestment. The standard line from Serious Types is that any kind of grassroots economic pressure on Israel is unthinkable, because that would be antisemitic/evil/terrorist, and because Israel’s system of apartheid is morally superior to South Africa’s system of apartheid in various unspecified ways. But at this point I really think American liberals should start thinking about this sort of thing, at least if they genuinely care about any kind of peace coming to the region, because it certainly doesn’t look like electoral politics alone is going to accomplish much.

Liked your post on gentrification. On that subject, I moved to Columbia Heights last year. When I take cabs home, which I do frequently to avoid harassment in the neighborhood, I’m often told horrendous stories about what Columbia Heights used to be like. While I’m glad I don’t live among open air drug markets, I’m still pretty freaked out by my neighborhood. It’s not paranoia, I’ve been quasi-assaulted (such as hit, but not hard) at least 50 times. What are some public policy solutions to address these sorts of things? People in the neighborhood pretty much have no thoughts on this, other than to say hello to youths and carry mace. Surely there has got to be a more long term policy solution?

Cardiff in Wales has football, rugby, cricket and runs a tennis club – but no b-ball. Lazio in Italy is another example but their fans make Dick Cheney look like Paul Wellstone so we won’t go there.

But why football and basketball in particular? As far as I know, Europeans care about other sports when their national team does well in an international competition, like the Olympics. Apart from that, it’s all football all the time and no other sport really matters.

Why oh why – I’m not all that comfortable asking bloggers like Matt to be fans of things I’m not sure he likes (like soccer) for my benefit but at least soccer is the global #1 game and is an avenue to discussions on media and sports stadium construction and international labor laws and racism and just about every issue under the sun. It’s that kind of content I want him to cover on his blog. I know some sporting clubs have badminton teams but whacking the ol’ shuttlecock around doesn’t have so many global consequences, capeche?

Matt already likes basketball. Some giant soccer clubs also have basketball clubs under their umbrella. I thought it was a natural fit to put the two together and see what pops up.

How about a post on the logic of depression economics? It seems to me that a lot of people just don’t seem to get that if everyone, including government, tries to increase their savings by cutting spending, then (in a liquidity trap environment) total system savings will *decrease*, not increase. i.e. The ratio of saving to consumption will increase, but the economy will contract so much that total savings will actually decrease.

This is the “Vulgar Keynesianism” Krugman critiqued in a Slate article, but right now we are in a “vulgar” environment.

Also, in trying to explain Keynes, Krugman once wrote something like “Because one man’s purchase is another man’s sale” cutting spending can lead to a vicious cycle of contraction”. I googled “one man’s purchase is another man’s sale”, and found only one result. Am I misremembering, or isn’t “One man’s purchase is another man’s sale” at least a somewhat widely used phrase?

Detroit and NASCAR–Here’s something that’s been bugging me. NASCAR depends on Detroit for its “stock” cars, but we haven’t heard any of the celebrity drivers out there campaigning for GM, Chrysler or Ford to be saved. How come? Are right-leaning NASCAR fans so anti-Detroit now that they won’t even stand up for the carmakers that their teams ostensibly represent? Seems like it would be harder for the Corkers and Shelbys to oppose help for Detroit if Dale Jr. and Jeff Gordon were standing up for US carmakers. Has Detroit missed a chance to enlist them, or failed to do so? Is NASCAR going to start running BMWs, Toyotas, and Hondas that are made in Southern states instead?

Why Rachel Maddow Matters
I’ve often been critical of Maddow because she doesn’t break news…she’s great at asking questions but with all that money she makes for GE, you’d think she’d shed some of that salary to hire some people to actually break stories…she’s even managed to use Richard Engel somewhat effectively…but i digress…

her line of questioning guests does have a tendency to somewhat keep me satisfied…even if i had not worded a question a certain way…or if I wish she only probed a little bit further…

but then i was watching anderson cooper tonight…and i realized that despite how much Maddow might frustrate me…Cooper is much worse…point being that I think Cooper is a fake Maddow and I think Maddow is half a journalist.

Why is nobody talking about firey death being rained on a civilian population by one of the most advance military nations in the world? 360 dead (80 civilians) over 800 wounded (some 200 critically) and counting

Why big liberal blogs are so scared of the Israel-Palestine issue while Little Green Fascists openly wank themselves off over the deaths of palestinian civilians?

Does anyone think Isreal can have the land (the territories) without the people (the palestinians)?

Does anyone think Israel can survive as a free democratic jesish state if it does not disengage?

In the absence of disengagement or a viable two state solution what is the alternative?

In the absence of a two state solution which of the remaining options will Israelis choose to preserve the necessary ideal of a homeland for the jewish people: a binational state; expulsion of the palestinians; extermination by starvation and bombing; or apartheid?

Why has the population of the west bank settlements doubled since Bush’s “roadmap”?

Why was the Gaza strip was deliberately handed to Hamas by the Israelis? Why is there “no partner for peace” and no coherent leadership or powers structure in the territories?

Given that the IDF couldn’t do it when they were there, once all the police stations and civil infrastructure in Gaza has been obliterated, who will control society and stop people from launching rockets?

Does anyone in America actually give a shit what goes on beyond your borders?

I think he also meant “run against him” in the sense of “use him as a whipping boy.” You know, as a symbol of Democratic corruption and stuff. If Burris does get seated and stays until 2010, I have no doubt that Republican Senatorial candidates in Illinois will talk about Burris more than whoever they’re running against. Hell, Republican Senatorial candidates in other states would talk about Burris a lot.

Yes, lets see your top ten tracks and or albums for 2008. I think it was a pretty bad year for indie music. Some stand out tracks in my mind would be Fucked Up’s “Black Albino Bones”, Animal Collective’s “Street Flashes”, Silver Jews’ “Suffering Jukebox” and Oxford Collapse’s “The Birthday Wars”, just to drop a few names.

As for the mainstream side, you gotta include “Single Ladies”, “L.E.S. Artistes”, “Flashing Lights” and so on and so forth.

My top ten tracks list would include probably all of those.

How about a post on American reaction to the Gaza strikes in light of American reaction to Russia’s invasion of Georgia?

The situations aren’t perfectly analogous, but in both cases a nation of vastly superior military strength has been provoked and has arguably overreacted in its response. There are a lot of similarities between the two, but they have elicited completely different reactions from policymakers, pundits and the public.

A piece on rapid conversion to electric vehicles, using rechargable batteries, tied to the auto bail-out? Require 50% of cars manufactured by 2011 to be electric; convince the public to use them by providing FREE RECHARGING STATIONS in inner city parking areas! Here in Baltimore, the fed could install such stations in private garages, along major thoroughfares.. Using a “spacial” plug, recharging at such stations would be FREE OF CHARGE; using an adapter, we could use regular, 110-120 volt current from typical outlets. Part of the “stimulus” package could include MANY such installations in major cities; more urban electric auto users could get a tax credit, based on annual milage, and showing proof of purchase.

Of course, this major change could prove affordable with the savings realized thru “single payer health care”. GET THE INSURANCE COMPANIES OUT OF MEDICINE!!

Хочу заметить, вопросы были весьма специфические, их было давольно много и по ним, на мой взгляд, действительно можно судить о моем образе жизни ну и о ее сроке.
