Rare Victory

I came up to New York City yesterday to visit my dad and some other folks for a few days. When I checked the listings and saw that the Wizards had a home game against the hapless Thunder for last night, I realized I had some bad timing. Obviously, a C-List game like that wasn’t televised in NYC, and I was pretty sure — and correct as it turns out — that we could win that game, making it one of only a very few opportunities I would have this season to watch the Wizards win a game.

At any rate, the whole Wizards season has been so pathetic that I can barely roust myself to blog about it. Suffice it to say that I was totally right when I spent all last season talking about Brendan Haywood and how his presence on the court was integral to the Wizards’ grasp on mediocrity.

The Thunder … ugh. The team should be the Seattle Sonics.

There are definitely some good signs for the ‘zards.

Roger Mason Jr is finally making good, for example…

    Blatch!

Just to remind you of the good times…

I’m honestly a big Mike James fan. Assuming your team isn’t planning on making the playoffs, he’s a great player to have running the point.

He’s not awful, he’s just mediocre. But he’s damn fun to watch.

And having him on the ‘zards is doubleplus spooky, because watching James this year is an eerily accurate window into the future of Gilbert’s ‘12-’13 season with the team…

Q: How is Andray Blatche like Time Magazine?
A: They both only deliver once a week.

Kid’s still only 22. If he likes playing hoops, he should get lots better over the next couple of years. And once you get the salary cap relief for Gilbert’s medical retirement, you should be able to bring in some help for Blatche.

  6. Petey Says:

Another good sign amidst the ‘zards woes:

With DeShawn Stevenson only hitting 31% from the field, the numbness he was experiencing in his face after making shots is no longer a problem.

  7. Waingro Says:

The Wizards have a lot of money invested in a core of guys who have only made it past the first round once. I’ve been wondering if they should trade Antawn Jamison to see what they can get, since the core of Butler, Jamison & Gilbert is most likely a second-round team at best. He’s a little older than the other guys and should be able to get some decent pieces.

And Arenas should just pull a D-Wade and skip the rest of this year to truly get 100% for next season. Maybe they’ll get lucky and get Blake Griffin or Ricky Rubio in the lottery.

  8. mort Says:

This might help you feel better… the Detroit Lions completed their 0-16 season today. When’s the last time Ford had a better idea? Please sell the team, Mr. Ford.

  9. Petey Says:

“I’ve been wondering if they should trade Antawn Jamison to see what they can get”

The contract extension Grunfeld gave to Jamison has made him essentially untradable. No one is going to want that contract without giving you another contract from hell in return.

In short, Jamison has negative trade value.

  10. Petey Says:

“In short, Jamison has negative trade value.”

Your only two players with any real trade value are Butler and Blatche.

Of course, they’re also the only two players you really want to keep…

“And Arenas should just pull a D-Wade and skip the rest of this year to truly get 100% for next season.”

I think Butler is on the verge of adopting that particular strategy.

  11. SLC Says:

Deadskins lose to the 49ers. Don’t fire the coach, fire the owner. Danny Snyder is a putz.

Slow day Petey? When you start quoting your own comments, it’s time to get some air.

Meh. Some of my best comments come from quoting my own comments.

“Meh. Some of my best comments come from quoting my own comments.”

It’s when I start quoting my own comments intra-comment that one could raise valid questions…

And don’t play with yourself, Petey.

  16. Don Williams Says:

If you get a chance, you might run over to the Met and see Renee Fleming in Thais. (Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tha%C3%AFs_(opera) ) Pretty hot for an opera singer. One of Pennsylvania’s exports.

It has a great scene where a rich man helps his friend Athanael and Thais escape a mob and flee from Alexandria Egypt. The rich man diverts the mob by throwing stacks of money up into the air. Until that point, I hadn’t understood what Bush was trying to do with the Wall Street bailout.

  17. Al Says:

No. I’m still holding on to Arenas for my fantsy team, after picking him in the 11th round. I’d prefer he come back sometime in the next few weeks.

Funny Don…… really!! Good one……… lol

  19. MQ Says:

The contract extension Grunfeld gave to Jamison has made him essentially untradable.

You could definitely get expiring contracts, draft picks, and some minor players for Jamison. Shed salary.

  20. Petey Says:

“You could definitely get expiring contracts, draft picks, and some minor players for Jamison.”

He’s slated to make $15m when he’s 36yo. Who would give value for that contract?

  21. Bragan Says:

Abe Pollin is responsible for two of the worst contracts ever — the $100+ million he gave Juwan Howard and the $100+ million for Arenas.

But at least Pollin isn’t that felonious asshole McClendon, who deserves every loss that the ok city Durants give him.

  22. SLC Says:

    Re Don Williams

Cecilia Bartoli was even hotter until she put on all that weight.

  23. spot check billy Says:

Dan Snyder. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help.

  24. SLC Says:

    Re spot check billy

I don’t have a high opinion of Abe Pollin but compared to a total asshole like Dan Snyder, he’s a prince.
