Out Out Out

iraq_1.jpg

Kevin Drum flags this from a pool report:

Then he told the kids he was opening the floor to questions, and proceeded to take more than double the number of questions than he took at his press conference….One child ask him about iraq and he said he plans to have troops home in a year and a half.

To repeat, I’ve heard a lot of conservative crowing over the past month from conservatives about the idea that Barack Obama
is backing away from his pledge for strategic redeployment from Iraq. Max Boot, for example, asserted that Robert Gates staying on at the Pentagon “all but puts an end to the 16-month timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.” Obama seems to feel otherwise. And he’s the president.

serious people must heed the wisdom of serious people like Max Boot, for serious people like Max Boot are serious.

  2. James Gary Says:

One man’s opinion: All this journalistic and bloggic second-guessing of Obama’s policies—with over a month to go before he even takes office—is really annoying.

    And he’s the president.

Well, not yet. But it sure seems like he’s more the President already than the guy who’s still in the Oval Office.

Only 34 more days of the Idiot-In-Chief.

  4. Dan Kervick Says:

At least the kids know how to stay focused on what’s important. The adult reporters are too easily distracted by the Blowjobovich sideshow.

Notice how it stated that he said “troops” and not “the troops” – there is an awful lot of wriggle-room provided by the lack of the definite article. “Troops” could at worst be a grand total of two soldiers.

  6. onceler Says:

Is there anyone in the world who gives a flying turd what Max Boot thinks about anything? Has he ever been right in his life? He’s a friggin idiot.

  7. Peter K. Says:

I don’t read these conservatives and I don’t know why they’re crowing about anything. They are cocooning in nonsense b/c their economics ideology is in shambles.

I’d be surprised if Obama didn’t pull out in 18 months. Permanent bases? Nothing big, and only at the leisure of the Iraqis.

The question for me is whether the Shia go on a revenge spree with no ref around – I do bet Sadr will be dead shortly after or he’ll be smart and move to Iran.

  8. Brock Says:

Unfortunately for many soldiers, “out of Iraq” does not mean “home”. It means “Afghanistan”.

I’m not blaming Obama for this, mind you. If Bush hadn’t distracted us with the Iraq War, we might be bringing troops home from Afghanistan now.

  9. John Henninger Says:

Eli Lake from the New Republic seems to be saying the same thing as Max Boot, and both of the appear not to be taking Obama’s words at face value. According to me what Lake and Booth both appear to be doing is trying to revise history and saying that Bush won a “decisive,” victory in Iraq, when in reality the US is going to leave that country in sixteen months under Obama’s plan or at the very least exit in 2011 under the SOFA.
