Obama’s Scientists

ph2008121804253_1.jpg

A couple of additional Obama appointments broke last night. One is John Holdren from Woods Hole and the dread HKS as presidential science adviser. I wrote one two three posts about a talk I heard Holdren give in Aspen back in July. He’s a very intense guy on the climate change issue as well as being a very accomplished scientist.

Meanwhile Jane Lubchenco will head up the National Oceanographic and Marine Administration. NOAA is best known to me as the government agency that once ordered me to stop poking a dolphin corpse with a stray tree branch, but they also have substantial responsibility for climate research and issues related to fisheries. Lubchenko is very impressive and “has served as president of the International Council for Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Ecological Society of America” as well as winning a bunch of awards: “a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, eight honorary degrees, the 2002 Heinz Award in the Environment, the 2003 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest, and the 2004 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Institute of Biological Sciences.”

These two plus Steven Chu creates a very impressive Team of Scientists who hopefully will be listened to when pushes start coming to shove.

Bah! What do these pointy-headed “experts” know! It’s snowing like hell in Chicago right now, global warming is BS! QED!!!

  2. AdamK Says:

You were poking a corpse with a stick, and you had to be told to stop?

    Eew!

“NOAA is best known to me as the government agency that once ordered me to stop poking a dolphin corpse with a stray tree branch’

This little tale deserves its own blog post.

  4. SLC Says:

Shorter President Elect Osama: fucktards from piece of shit law schools like Regent and Liberty are not welcome in my administration.

  5. Hector Says:

Wow! Lubchenco is an impressive scientist, I read a couple of her papers last year.

If Obama can do something important to solve the overfishing problem, he will have really ensured his place in history. This is really, really a big problem and I wish it had gotten addressed more by previous administrations.

  6. fostert Says:

I know of NOAA as the guys who apprehended me when I was trying to cut through their property. It was under construction, so I didn’t think it was a big deal. Turns out, it was. I guess you just don’t want to mess those NOAA guys.

I’d like to think that you were a small boy when this happened.

  8. chrsux Says:

    …or at least totally wasted.

  10. Njorl Says:

I understand that she intends to have NOAA create a DNA databank of species placed at risk from the effects of global warming. Specimens of every species will be collected. To account for the chromosomal differnce in sexes, one of each will be procurred. They will then be stored in NOAA’s Animal Restoration Knowledgebase.

  11. SPURIOUS Says:

I have to say, from that picture John Holdren looks pretty effeminate.

  12. Parker Says:

I can’t recall if they actually confiscated your poking stick…Or your empty margarita glass…

  13. Rocknerd Says:

Holdren works at Woods Hole Research Center, not the MIT affiliated Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. I am not trying to say he is not a respectable scientist (he does know what he is talking about). I just think it is important to note the difference. Thanks!

  14. Just Karl Says:

I didn’t hear anything about Obama’s ocean policy during the primary. I am surprised he hasn’t shown more interest being from Hawaii. I guess we have to assume that Lubchenco will get a free hand to set the agenda.

  15. Robin Ozretich Says:

    Lubchenco! Go Beavs!

  16. yo-z Says:

    NOAA also forecasts the weather.

I’m surprised you haven’t gone and talked about how thats another government service that could be improved.
