At the rate DNA sequencing costs are falling, it looks like we’ll discover a lot more genetic variants affecting political behavior, personality, and cognitive ability during Obama’s first term.
Should the federal government support such research or try to slow it (with privacy restrictions, human-subjects rules, etc)? What happens to political discourse if we find that much of the social conservative/social liberal divide is genetically based?

Why are we ignoring, or is there no news, about fixing Levees in New Orleans as well as in California with stimulus money. These things are desperately needed and would create jobs, yet I haven’t seen them mentioned with prominence. Also, why aren’t we hiring dutch engineers to help us with it?

2. Very unrealistic depiction of actual Russian railways. You may have taken the trip in the 90’s. I just took the train the full length from Moscow to Vladivostok last month.

I’d like to hear Matt’s take on yesterday’s WSJ article on Iceland; “The Isle That Rattled The World”.
It’s an interesting read & to my untrained eye seems to be a piece of even-handed reportage. Charles Forelle indentifies key players & the decisions they made, but not in an accusatory way. But, then, I know nothing about Iceland. Matt however has some knowledge of & apparent interest in the place, so I’d like to know; is Forelle’s piece a relatively accurate & fair portrayal of what went wrong with Iceland?
My interest is not just academic, via the WSJ piece I discovered that my small Atlantic province has had dealings with Landsbanki. I’d like to get better idea of the contours of Iceland’s collapse & how it might impact my own small (& fragile) economy.

How about a post on the effect of methane emissions on global warming? Cows probably contribute as much, maybe more, to global warming as cars. If we’re going to tax carbon emitters, we should tax methane emitters (cows) as well

raff: Yes, that’s a fairly accurate article, avoiding many of the pitfalls. My main complaint about it is that it tells very little about the economic hardships hitting Iceland now (gigantic deficit, skyrocketing unemployment etc.) instead focusing on anecdotes about people affected abroad.

Your interest in urbanist issues appear to be the primary distinguishing feature of your product, much as health policy is for Ezra Klein. You need to go deeper into this.
Decisions made in the next two years will largely determine the shape of urban life for the rest of our lives, much as decisions to encourage car-dependence in the 1940s-50s shaped everything about American life in the following half-century.
The health and attractiveness of cities as actually at the foundation of almost all progressive issues. The narcissism of conservatism in the last few decades has been made possible, in part, by the atomising quality of suburban life — the way it allows you to associate only with people you choose, and thus to experience the true diversity and difficulty of life only on television.
People who live in real cities have a lived experience of their entire society, in all its diversity and with all its problems. It’s simply obvious, when living in cities, that a huge range of problems can only be solved by collective action, which in turn requires a positive view of government and a willingness to fight for government that is both activist and competent.
Americans will only grow comfortable with the progressive agenda if they grow comfortable with big, dense cities, and increasingly want to live in them. So I hope you will use your influence to educate more progressives about urban policy issues, and encourage more of them to activism in this area.

I’m really interested in how to stop the Earth from melting to the point that my children’s children will know an environment drastically degraded and different from the one that many generations of previous humans enjoyed. We should all be afraid of massive food shortages in the coming years. Between climate shifts, pollinator collapse, patented seed crops, fisheries extinction and a fertilizer crisis there is another looming “Perfect Storm” of converging crisis around the issue of how to feed everybody.

ALSO: I have heard that there are large amounts of methane trapped under the ocean (e.g. above Siberia) and that as the planet warms, it will bubble up and enter the atmosphere, accelerate climate change even further, and basically doom us all. Relative to the ramifications of this if true, I have heard shockingly little about it. Is that because it’s not true? Or what?

What exact rail/transit projects should be top priorities in the coming infrastructure spending discussion?
What expert economic/transport evidence backs these up as the projects with the highest returns? Outside sources/links would be helpful
How can rail/transit projects really get an economist’s vote as high priority versus other infrastructure spending (i.e. highway repairs) since few of these projects are “shovel ready” or would produce real transport benefits for many years?
How can rail/transit projects get a strong share of the infrastructure pie, given the many political obstacles (benefits concentrated in few Congressional districts, lack of the strong advocates that other big spending items have, anti-transit view well entrenched in media/think-tank circles)?

I would like to read some form of clarification on your use of the word “retaliation” to describe the recent Israeli assault on Gaza. One rarely read of Hamas “retaliating” against Israeli strikes. The reassumption of the rocket attacks on Israel was, after all, in “retaliation” to the Israeli breaking of the gaza ceasefire of November 5, 2008 (http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article9937.shtml). “Retaliation” justifies what could otherwise just be described as an assault or attack, it suggests its in response to a comparable offense when it isn’t.

Pick one, they’re both excellent:
1. How do you feel about the negative aspects of urban gentrification? You write a good deal about urban planning, but I haven’t read your take on this phenomenon.
2. Why is “finding better teachers” such a preoccupation among self-described education reformers? Of course, we’d have a better education system if our teachers were better. We’d also have a better military if our soldiers were better and a better health care system if our doctors and nurses were better. Why is education the only policy area where “find better people” is treated as a workable solution?

I would like to see you address your (mostly) female commentators posts regarding the CIA supplying Afghani warlords with Viagra, which you found “clever”. I would hope you are open enough to be able to have rethought your position. If not, I’d like to see you defend it in light of many of their points. You can also see Digby, Jezebel, and Feministe for other female views on this subject.
What I think you should note, is that to a woman, the phrase “gives them back their authoritative position” seems to have jumped out at us.
And yet not a man in the liberal blogosphere, that i have found so far, has made comment on this.

1) I would like to hear any gossip you pick up re things turning to shit. Further economic problems, etc.
although I kinda think I’m going to a dry well here. You extol the benefits of the District and Arlington over outlying suburbs like Prince Williams county.
2) But I’ve gotten three text messages from the District of Columbia’s emergency warning system in the past month:
a) Alert one was a notice that a Metro station was shut down because a Metro train had caught on fire
b) On that same morning, there was another alert put out re a power outage about a mile from the closed Metro station — which shut down the traffic lights around a major intersection and caused a massive traffic jam.
c) Roughly two weeks later, there was another alert re a big water pipeline bursting and flooding the streets in a section of DC.
2) Maybe it’s me but from Philadelphia, it kinda looks like your urban paradise is falling down around your ears. DC has about 100 years of deferred infrastructure repair. That’s why corporations won’t touch DC real estate with a 10 foot pole.

I always enjoy the pro basketball comments as I am a huge bball fan. But now that my kids are getting older and more into it, soccer has become one of my favorite sports interests. So anything about the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A or the Champions League would be welcomed by me.
More on indy music. Again, as I rapidly approach geezerhood I can’t keep up with all the new music coming out and I try to listen to a sampling of it so that I can have some clue as to what my kids will be listening to with their friends.
Green economy.
Mass transit issues.
Math education.
Orchestral music, ie living music, eg New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Berlin, etc. Philharmonics/Symphonies.

I’d like to see an updated post on blog comments and how you feel about it. I know you’ve addressed it previously, but any updated thoughts? Do you read all of them? Does it make you feel better or worse about humanity? I imagine you like them, or you wouldn’t allow them, but doesn’t it distract sometimes? Isn’t the lowest common denominator sometimes the loudest voice? It amazes me that almost every Rich or Friedman op-ed at the NYT gets 400+ comments, but who’s reading those? Do the commenters care about that others think? Do the editors?
I read Sullivan regularly and whenever he asks about comments I am vehemently against it, because a) I don’t want to get suckered into the reading the comments, and b) I don’t want him to either. So I am very glad he doesn’t allow comments. Though I read you regularly, I have never commented and I rarely read the comments. Sometimes, comments just seem like a self-indulgent vehicle for people who don’t care what others think. I know, that’s not an original thought.
Anyway, why can some blogs exist with comments as a critical aspect of Web 2.0, while some others can exist, quite successfully, without that aspect?

Quick question about nukes: you blogged the other day that the Pakistan and India standoff should be getting more attention because tens of millions might die, suggesting, I guess, that the conflict might go nuclear. Fair enough. But then your (and my) longstanding position has been that a nuclear Iran wouldn’t be the absolute worst thing in the world from an Israeli point of view because no rational Iranian leader would use nukes against Israel, since it would invite certain retaliatory annihilation. So how is this different? Shouldn’t a rational Zardari recognize that using nukes would cause a massive retaliatory response from India too costly to bear? Or is there some other way of resolving this apparent contradiction?

1. Don’t ask, don’t tell. When does it go, and how? Obama says that he wants to ‘work through a process’, but what process, exactly, is that? Does he use declining enlistment (IS enlistment still declining?) as a justification? Do the military leaders use it as a power play against Obama, a la Clinton? Who makes the first move? And when? Is Rick Warren just a clever way to soften the blow to social conservatives?

Every stoplight has a camera on it courtesy, apparently, of the Dept of Homeland Security. Even small, rural towns have been given the gift of a multitude of these cameras. What are they using these for? How are they monitoring us? Why are more people not up in arms about this kind of Big Brother invasion?

Andrea Corr just got engaged to her billionheir (that spelling is correct) boyfriend (he’s the eventual heir to his father’s billions).
I don’t see her even making it to the altar, let alone five years tops. She really doesn’t want to be married, despite all the usual denials.
And this guy is three years younger than her. So can you see him, when she’s 55 and he’s 52 going through his mid-life crisis and every babe in the world hitting on him because he’s a billionaire, sticking with her? Neither can I. And she’s not stupid, she knows this.
So this isn’t going anywhere.

Besides the repair of the infrastructure which some have mentioned, reports on the disaster of the (non)health care system in the U.S., the only developed company that doesn’t have one. People being bankrupted and losing their homes to pay medical bills, when they aren’t just refused care.
Also, as mentioned, other parts of the world like the Democratic Republic of Congo where an estimated 4 million people have been killed, and the West turns a blind eye being more interested in the poor oppressed Israelis “defending” themselves with U.S. supplied weapons.
Why American capitalism is a failure that only exists because of its outrageous exploitation of the third world.

Marcia Angell has a great article in the Jan. 15th NYRB on drug companies and doctors – I’d like to hear your take on the issues she discusses. It’s hard to believe that things are as screwed up as Angell says, but, unfortunately, it’s even harder to believe that she’s very far off the mark (if she’s off the mark at all).

I’m curious if you think that (illegal) MP3 downloading will ever become an issue in political campaigns. I’m about your age, and went to college around that time. If someone my age was running for political office and said “I never pirated music” I would say that they are straight out lying.
Is this going to be the equivalent of marijuana for boomers? Will someone come up with an analog to “I didn’t inhale”? Or is no one going to care?

2 things:
1. How come nobody is talking about a 35 hour workweek as a pro-employment policy. Nobody.
2. Here’s something else I haven’t heard as a way to address the foreclosure crisis: increase the tax credits or tax write-offs for mortgage payments. For people struggling to make their payments, this helps. For people who can make their payments, this gives them money to spend (stimulus). And it avoids the politically problematic trap of only helping homeowners who are struggling (who are blamed–rightly or wrongly–for being irresponsible in taking loans they couldn’t afford).

Per your more recent post on retail bankruptcies: Anybody else wondering where the laid-off staffs of defunct retailers and their suppliers will find work? Retail and distribution have supplied jobs of last resort to the poorly educated, low-skilled workers who used to be in manufacturing. Now the factories are closed and the retailers are closing. What’s next for these people? They can’t all be security guards and toll-takers.
My guess is mass remedial adult education, to prepare these workers for the jobs that will exist in the future.
I haven’t seen much wonkery on this subject, let alone any proposals from legislators and policy makers.

When discussing the increase in income inequality over the past 8 years (and more), two things are generally pointed out.
1) The productivity of the typical American worker has gone up.
2) The wages of the typical American worker has remained flat.
This is (I think rightly) chalked up to the rich – the executives and the employers – taking all the profit from those productivity gains and putting it in their own pockets. The statistics on the stratospheric wealth the rich have managed to accumulate over the past decade seem to bear this out. But I’d like to see a more concrete example.
For a company that doesn’t have unionized labor, but does have highly-paid executives, how much of the total compensation goes to management and executives vs the rest of the labor force that could potentially be unionized? Are the stratospheric wages of the executives really taking money out of the pockets of the workers? And could unionization really be a remedy to this?
One could take any telecomm firm as an example. Such firms have highly-paid executives and many low-paid workers.

Folks in favor of card-check elections claim that the new law will let employees choose hidden ballot elections, if 30% of employees want to hold an election.
The right, however, replies that this is deceptive, because the decision makers will be the union organizers, not the 30% of employees, and union organizers have a strong incentive to always go with card-check elections rather than hidden ballot elections.
What do you say, Matt?

I’d like you to examine the intellectual property issue a bit more. I’m specifically thinking about the whole file sharing issue and how it relates to other aspects of the IP controversy such as excessive copyright duration for literary works. If copyright for recordings lasted only, say, five years, would you consider it tolerable if everybody had to pay (ie., if file sharing were still considered illegal?) for music files? You give me the impression you think that file sharing ought to be allowed by law (I myself would love to be able to get DRM-free files for free, too, who wouldn’t?), but, if the window during which artists can earn royalties were made far more narrow, would your opinion be different? Or, to put it another way, what exactly is your idea of a well thought-out, utility-maximizing IP framework, especially as it related to music?

Conservation! It’s the missing topic in the current energy and global warming debate. It is the fastest, cheapest, easiest way to reduce energy demand. It also saves American consumers money, and reduces dependence on foreign oil. And all this with no new technology, no nuclear power, no new electric grid, etc. See the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, aceee.org.

Scandinavian architecture. I went home to London for Christmas after an absence of a year and made the fairly bland observation that although plenty of new buildings seem to have sprung up, they are mostly at the functional and dull end of the aesthetic spectrum. A friend added that the Scandinavians are, as a general rule, much better at making their new buildings look nice. I haven’t spent any time at all in Scandinavia, but you have. Please tell me me if my friend had a point.
