The situation in Somalia continues to be extraordinarily bad, but the resignation of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed from the presidency of Somalia’s de jure but powerless government counts as good news. His hardline stance has, along with incredibly irresponsible behavior from the US and Ethiopia been a significant contributor to Somalia’s problems. I wouldn’t say that this makes a turnaround likely, but it’s certainly more likely than it was before.

We should recognize Somaliland’s independence!!!

We should have recognized and tried to domesticate the Somali Islamic Courts movement.
As it is, we’ve decided to fund the imperial pretensions of one of the poorest countries in the world in its invasion and occupation of one of the other poorest countries in the world.
It’s doomed to fail of course. The fallout will be catastrophic. And it’ll go down in history as Bush’s fourth or fifth failed war.

the world should have realised their mistake when they started to support a warlord who has the blood of thousands of somalis on his hands as a president because somehow he was preferable to those ‘pesky’ muslims of the islamic courts.
the people of somalia will never accept occupation under the hands of occupiers from arch enemy eithopia who continually rapes and murders somalis in their own country and their quisling collabrators the TFG.
Shame abdullahi yusuf is resigning. He should be executed for treason as the first person to bring in foreign occupation into his own country for his own aims. After 2 years this man has brought nothing to somalia but treachery, bloodshed and genocide. Good riddance. His supporters in pirate infested puntland where his traitourous clansmen and warlords hail from will face justice for their actions too

Yes! He finally steps down!
Somalis see the warlord’s resignation as a good step towards peace and stability in Somalia. One reason they hope this would change things is that if the follow up President is one who can make peace with Islamic insurgents, then things will calm down. With the expected of Ethiopia’s troops from Somalia, the insurgents will have a way to negotiate with people they can trust will listen to them. The Prime minister now has something to be bring to the table, as in “we no longer have to worry about a warlord President, so come to the table guys.”
Hopefully, they will come to the table now.

The people of somalia will NEVER accept the brutal ethiopian occupation of somalia.
I am a somali who was born in Mogadishio and every somali does not want ethiopian troops in somalia.
Ethiopians hate somali people and they are the ones that arm and finance somali warlords so that somalia my never have peace.

It good news because he has chosen to take the path of a dictator when he opted overun the capital rather stabilising the regions. He chose to crush his opponents and was a puppet the Americans who used the Ethiopians to fight for them a proxy war against terriorist …
Abdullahi Yusuf and his allies will surely be haunted by the blood of the innocent civilians, thounsands of homes, dreams and hopes he has shuttered. He has committed crimes against humanity and should be taken to the international court of justice together with his masters to answer for the crimes they have committted in Somalia.
That will be the best way to deal with all those who choose to opt to use military options rather than a diaglogue approach to resolve conflicts.

Abdi, Ahmed, and Yusuf,
The Ethiopians didn’t fuck up Somalia. You people managed to do that all by yourselves. Congratulations. You should be proud of building a country that cannot support a functioning government, where the only ruling power is gangs of teenagers with machine-guns, and where nuns and 13-year old rape victims are routinely murdered, all in the name of your so-called “prophet”.
If nothing else, the last 20 years have shown that at this time, Somalia is incapable of developing anything like a functioning and decent society, and therefore they need to be ruled over and civilized by the Ethiopians. The Ethiopians deserve a medal for the thankless job they’ve undertaken in trying to restore order and decency to Somalia. Perhaps in 20 or 30 years you guys will be capable of self-government, but until then the only solution is for all the Islamist thugs to be hanged as war criminals.

hector,
you have spoken like a true christian racist. there is no point in talking to you. you who support the murder and rape of somalis by eithopian war criminals. i guess the blood os somalis mean nothing to you since we are muslims.
oh yes we managed peace in 2006 for 6 months but ofcourse the christians in eithopia and washington could’nt bear a stable somalia run by a muslim government.
i think you finally gave it away when you said eithopians are occupying somalia to civilise them. as a somali i can only shake my head. you are nothing but a racist islamaphobe who supports war criminals.
you are truly pathetic hector.

hello abdi and ahmed,
it’s truly a turning point in our country. That war criminal had no choice but to resign. His eithopian soldiers were getting killed by somali resistance and his traitors were getting hunted down in xammar and central somalia.
this man truly thought that he could have ruled somalia like siyad barre. i know of my relatives who have died in xamaar because of this man. He brought tribal medeival politics and set clan against clan and somali against somali. He used the famous divide and rule to rule us.
wallahi brothers, this animal will be executed for the crimes he made. like saddam he thought he could have gotten away with it. somalia will rise again and we will have a government that works for the people inshallah

Yusuf,
“God willing”, all you will get is to have the bloody Islamists facing a firing squad, every last one of them.
You talk a lot about the Somali people, but their blood is on the hands of their fellow Somalis. You guys preferred to indulge in orgies of rape, murder, and looting than try and build a decent society, so now your country is the most miserable in the world. I’m sorry about that, but you can’t blame your problems on the Ethiopians. Since the warring Somali gangs have shown that they don’t give a fuck about bettering the lives of their countrymen, they need to be ruled by Ethiopians.

Geez Hector,
You do realize that the Somali had a cultured and advanced society for thousands of years. They were a civilized people during the time of the romans.
You’re aware that in the 19th century, the Somali lands were overrun by Italian, British, French and Ethiopian empires.
I’m sure that you’re aware that the Ethiopians also conquered other peoples, the Oromo etc., who preferred independence.
You are aware that after the end of WWII the Somali sought independence and unification. They wanted to bring their nation together, much as America had done, as Italy and Germany had done. That included Somali territories wrongfully conquered and held by Ethiopia.
That Somali’s collapse was brought about when the USSR intervened on Ethiopia’s behalf, thousands of Cuban troops were sent, and in the ensuing wreckage the warlords took over.
And of course you must know that during the Somali civil war, when the United States intervened as a ‘peacekeeper’ there was a gathering of Somali clan leaders and elders with the intention of reining in a warlord… And American forces showed up and slaughtered everyone in the building. Thereby perpetuating the cycle of warlords.

Skeptic,
Given that America’s “bringing the nation together” involved pandering to slavemasters, murdering millions of Native Americans, and stealing half of Mexico in a naked war of aggression, I’m not sure that is a good example for anyone.
There wasn’t a unified Somali nation prior to Menelik’s conquest of eastern Ethiopia, so I’m not sure who you think the Ogaden was stolen from. Anyway, Somalia tried to conquer it back in 1977 and they lost, end of story.
December 30th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Well, given that America’s a country based on pandering to slavemasters, naked wars of aggression, and murdering millions, are you really in a position to judge any other people?
Second, are you prepared to acknowledge that the collapse of Somali society can be traced back directly to the unending consequences of the war back in 1977, and subsequent interference by Ethiopia, the United States and othes.
December 30th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Skeptic,
I’m not judging the Somalis in my capacity as an American, but in my capacity as a human being. And I note you fail to mention the record of one of Somalia’s national heroes,
vis-a-vis the Ethiopians.
