Wire References Bring Us All Together

I’m not the biggest Jonah Goldberg fan in the world, but how can you not like his introduction to his BHTV segment with Ross Douthat:

I, a bleary-eyed not quite elder-statesman (mid-level staffer?) of the rightwing interwebs, disoriented from long nights on the road, cold medication and excessive spirits the night before. He, a clear-eyed young Turk, brimming with excitement and fresh ideas. Together, you get the sort of entertainment unheard of outside C-Span III at four in the morning. It’s like Marlo v. Barksdale, Obama v. McCain, a new weird Green Lantern character versus an old weird Green Lantern character.

I think if Barack Obama really wants to bring the country together, he needs to incorporate as many Wire references as possible into his inaugural address. It’s a new day for the United States of America!

“My first act as President is to declare that ‘New York’ shall now be known as ‘New Hampsterdam’.”

  2. Andrew Swift Says:

If you want to find out where Ayers, Wright, et all are, just look for a generic chain hotel with a “New Day Co-Op” meeting scheduled.

  3. Brent Says:

I like the The Wire less now.

  4. Flippanter Says:

I will be very happy when nerdy white bloggers find another cultural artifact to quote and lecture me about.

  5. Alex Says:

The Wire taught me valuable lessons about the pros and cons of joining the local co-op.

  6. Cyrus Says:

I’m surprised you, of all people, didn’t pick up on the Green Lantern thing. (The analogy between Hal Jordan and Jonah Goldberg vs. Kyle Rayner and Ross Douthat seems apt… just in case any Hal Jordan fans are reading.)

  7. James Gary Says:

I’m just grateful that it’s The Wire with Matt and not Battlestar Galactica or something even stupider.

  8. brent Says:

Thing is, Marlo versus Barksdale wasn’t much of a contest. Barksdale was pretty badly routed. How did Douthat and Goldberg go? Given that I have no intention of watching it, it would still be interesting to know if Goldberg maintains as one of the stupidest people in our discourse.

  9. bradford Says:

Matt, no love or any references to “Generation Kill”? I feel like I’m the guy just after watching season one of the wire, and having everyone ignore you when you implore them as to the quality and compelling nature of a series. Why no love for “Generation Kill” on blogs that have much love for the wire? Why matt? vendetta against Simon/Burns?

  10. fuzzy dunlop Says:

I think it rather resembles Omar versus Bird.

  11. Shawn Says:

I’m pretty sure that the Corner’s entire membership is now part of the Sinestro Corps. Although some of them (e.g. Steyn) could wind up becoming Red Lanterns after Tuesday.

  12. fuzzy dunlop Says:

With Maurice Levy as the equivalent of Karl Rove. But this time, his tricks won’t play on the jury, due to Omar’s coolness.

  13. TMRM Says:

Hey man, love for the Wire and all, but it has gone off the air now. Time for everybody to start showing love to The Shield in its final season.

  14. kid bitzer Says:

    i’m with brent.

you’re taking the modus ponens line on this, but i’m taking modus tollens.

goldberg is *still* an inexcusable wanker, and no one with whom anyone should feel unity.

so if he can quote the wire, it just shows that there’s something wrong with the wire.

  15. MosBen Says:

Well done on the GL reference Shawn.

  16. Viceroy Matt Says:

First word of Obama’s victory speech:

    “Sheeeeeeit.”

  17. john i Says:

Please ignore people complaining about literary allusions – The Wire, Simpsons, Seinfeld, Dickens, Aeschylus – it’s all good.

  18. fuzzy dunlop Says:

Bradford – Generation Kill is just more run-of-the-mill than The Wire, which is brilliant. It’s also more boring, strangely resembling ‘Jarhead’ or something like that. It deals with the invasion, not the occupation, of Iraq. Most of the men are depicted as quite brave, except for the one or two obligatory nutters. The war scenes were scintillating, though.

Yes, I’ve heard rumors that Mr. Yglesias has had some visceral words about The Wire. That’s a shame, but let’s forgive him. Feel absolved, Matthew!

  19. MNPundit Says:

Not being able to afford the channel, I have no fucking clue about anything about the wire except that the head writer is now actively at war with the US Government over drug policy.

  20. jimbo Says:

When the podcast appeared on my player this morning, all I could think was ‘Two doughy pantloads?’

  21. fuzzy dunlop Says:

MNPundit, I couldn’t afford a channel either, but there are some legally ambivalent webpages where The Wire is ready for y’all to be enjoyed. I think David Simon wouldn’t complain, with him being all anti-institutional and stuff. Try this:

    http://www.watchtvsitcoms.com/thewire.php

    Democracy in action, gentlemen!

  22. David Says:

MNPundit: Can you afford netflix? If so put the Wire on the Queue. Pretty simple.

  23. MSB Says:

Where do I send my resume to apply for the position of Chief Wire Reference Advisor to the Obama Communications Team?

  24. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Yeah, but unless we figure out what Cameron’s secret agenda is, the world’s going to end in four years anyway.
