Henry Waxman’s taking over the Energy and Commerce Committee. Harold Meyerson made the (persuasive) case for Waxman in a Washington Post column recently. Let the experimentation with socialism begin.

UPDATE: Between Waxman, David Axelrod, and Eric Holder mustachioed men are taking control of American politics. Perhaps this, rather than a “team of rivals” is the real 19th century throwback element of the Obama Era.

While I’m glad Waxman won, I am also kind of sad that he will no longer be chairing the Oversight committee. I used to work in that policy area, and Waxman, probably more than anyone else, did a great job shining a light on the Bush administration’s (mis)handling of Katrina and Iraq government contracts.

You should check out pictures of Neil Young from the past few years. He’s an auto nut, so maybe Obama can appoint him as CEO of the Big Three, since a cabinet job is out of the question(being a Canadian citizen).

Let me get this straight: Dingell and Byrd can loose their chairmanships but not Lieberman.
Apparently they should have endorsed McCain at his convention and campaigned for them.
That sort of thing can be arranged…

Maybe we’re celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Oakland A’s’ run of championships in the early 1970s.

I’m just wondering when did it become so in vogue to shit on Michigan? like, anything Michigan related is considered toxic.
Well, ya know what?
A lot of good people live in Michigan and so what that John Dingell represents his local constituency well and all, but he’s supposed to give up his seat, for the door mouse, just b/c he represents a lot of auto workers?
This is bullshit. It’s not as if Dingell is incapable of being more pro-environment. The incentives are certainly there. He knows we’ve got to get greener. Wouldn’t it be better to have someone in that position who at least is sensitive to the needs of the Industry that needs to “reform” in green ways.
Let me get this straight. Joe Lieberman actively campaigns for the republicans and even makes over the top accusations about Obama’s patriotism and shit. And he gets to keep his post. Dingell does his job, and he’s voted out, and we’re supposed to be happy about this.
The manufacturing industry employs real people with real jobs who have livelihoods at stake. Putting Fievel, ya know, Mr. Santa Monica in charge of the Energy and Commerce is, ya know, kinda fucked up. Shouldn’t we have a guy there who’s constituency, involves a lot of, ya know, commerce and energy?!?!

The vaunted Team of Mustaches. 2:1 odds that Tom Selleck is chosen as Secretary of the Interior. Bowmchicka wow wow…

The thing I don’t understand is why the lame duck Democratic caucus gets to decide who chairs committees in the coming term. Shouldn’t they wait till the new members are seated to do this?
November 20th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Shitting on Michigan came into vogue right after the University of Oregon beat the Wolverines football team. Sorry. As for Waxman beating Dingell, WOW! this is big. I love politics. Nancy Pelosi, promised Rangel (whom I despise) a deal. You get to keep your porkpie chairmanship of Ways & Means, and we’ll ignore your myriad ethical indescretions, if you’ll just let Dingell slide into the committees crankcase. Meanwhile, Barney Frank will continue to “oversee” American Finance from his post on the Banking & Finance Committee. Both Frank and (especially) Rangel need to be drummed out in favor of competent reformers. Still, way to go Waxman.

Congrats to Rep. Waxman on his new chairmanship, but the thing that I love about this news is that it really pisses Steny Hoyer off.
w00t!

Regarding Dingell, let’s not forget that the environment is not the only thing the Energy and Commerce Committee handles – it also handles health care and the economy. For all that Dingell isn’t good on environmental stuff, he is a stalwart on universal health care, and we do want him around to help craft the House’s bill. For that matter, as much as Waxman’s great on the environment, he represents a very swanky district in Beverly Hills, and I’m worried about how interested/competent he is on health care, jobs, etc.
Let’s not forget, there are some really good things about some of the people we’re calling for the downfall of. Rangel’s not the cleanest politician out there, but he was still pushing for progressive taxation even when Pelosi and the rest of the caucus was walking sideways on it; Frank is stalwart on civil rights and civil liberties issues.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Not if it’s Dingell.
The interests of Dingell’s constituency was in line with the national interest for years, but it is no longer true. Michigan’s interests with regard to energy policy now run counter to the country’s interests. “Anything to cut the price of gas” is not an appropriate attitude for the chairman of the commerce and energy commitee.
Dingell should continue to advocate aggressively for his constituents. It is his duty to do so. That is what makes him a poor fit for this particular chairmanship.

Shouldn’t we have a guy there who’s constituency, involves a lot of, ya know, commerce and energy?!?!
No. That’s exactly the opposite of what we should have. Tom Vilsak should also not run the department of agriculture.

This is all in line with Doris Kearns Goodwin’s lesser known first novel, team of mustaches, which I heard Barack Obama is also smitten with.
