The Waxman-Dingell Showdown

Kate Shepard has tons of info about Rep. Henry Waxman’s efforts to unseat Rep. John Dingell from the chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. But all you really need to know is this — Waxman’s been the solid liberal chair of Government Oversight for a while now, but that’s no fun with a progressive in the White House. Meanwhile, Dingell is from Michigan, and it’s just very hard to robustly represent the parochial short-term economic interests of Michigan while also acting responsibly with regard to climate change.

Kick him up to Labor Secratary if it’s going to be messy. As far as I can tell Labor is just a pulpit anyway.

  2. Ted Kilvington Says:

As a Michigan Democrat, I say Hell Yes, make Dingell Secretary of Labor (it’s a safe Dem seat) and make Waxman Chair of Energy and Commerce.

  3. Jon H Says:

So, how would a person go about supporting Waxman in his effort?

  4. Toady Says:

I would think GO would be an extraordinarily interesting place to be as the new administration starts sorting through the filing cabinets and long-cowed career bureaucrats begin feeling a bit more confident. Perhaps not long term, but at least through the 111th.

  5. John Says:

Making Dingell Secretary of Labor seems like a great idea to avoid a mess.

That would be the conventional wisdom. How’s that conventional wisdom working out? Perhaps Michigan would do better if the domestic car industry did take seriously conservation. I don’t see what’s so hard, it is conservative to conserve, is it not?

  7. Th Says:

I was hoping Waxman would send his requests for documents to the new administration and immediately receive them. Start with Cheney’s secret energy task force and work his way forward.

  8. acallidryas Says:

Like Th, I was hoping Waxman would stay on in his role and continue with the oversight on the last administration.

But if there’s a real opportunity to get rid of Dingell as Chair of Energy and Commerce? Oh please, oh please, oh please, let it be so.

  9. kafka Says:

“…Perhaps Michigan would do better if the domestic car industry did take seriously conservation. I don’t see what’s so hard, it is conservative to conserve, is it not?…”

Detroit’s automakers build plenty of very fuel efficient cars – in Europe. In the U.S. they build SUVs and other hogs. The problem is low U.S. fuel prices and the effect they have on consumer preferences.

  10. Doug Says:

I doubt Labor Sec would be enough to get Dingell of the Hill. He’s put his life into that Committee and surprising he even hung in there through the dark years, suffering many indignities thrown his way by the Repugnant majority. But I agree Waxman deserves his shot and something needs to be done to facilitate Dingell’s next position in Government.

  11. Anthony Damiani Says:

Possibly a deal involving the funding the big-three need to survive?

  12. methane gas my ass Says:

Waxman is better than Dingle but he isn’t above parochial short-term interests. It is likely the LA subway would already extend to the westside if Waxman hadn’t blocked federal funding way back in 1985 at the behest of his Beverly Hills constituents.

  13. Jon H Says:

“Perhaps Michigan would do better if the domestic car industry did take seriously conservation. ”

Quite likely. But Dingle’s always been ready to help them take the cheap and easy way out. It’s not been in his (campaign coffers’) interest to make the big 3 face reality.

  14. sexshop Says:

hope that you keep reporting and following up on this issue. I signed the petition because I can’t think of anything that is more important to the long-term health of our country, our environment, and our economy than a smart transportation policy, and especially

  15. Ben Cronin Says:

Despite my general pro-Dem feelings, being in Dingell’s district forced me to vote Green against him.
