Scarborough Lashes Out at Bloggers, Krugman

I almost choked on my coffee this morning when I saw this:

The description of Krugman as “hateful” has a nice straight outta 2003 quality to it. Of course there is some hateful political rhetoric out there. But the effort to stigmatize all strident political commentary as “hate” is annoying, and the effort to exclusively stigmatize strident liberal political commentary as hate is absurd. And this — rather than, say, regular appearances by Nobel Prize winning economist and hugely popular political columnist Paul Krugman — is what we get on our terrifyingly liberal MSNBC.

  1. JoeyJoJo Says:

Wow. I now think of Joe Scarborough as hateful. He always seemed so affable and moderate…

Yesterday I briefly watched a piece they had posted on the Huffington Post (?) where they sent some guy to canvas for McCain/Palin on the (apparently) uber-liberal Upper West Side. The reaction was generally a bemused “you’ve got to be kidding!” and “I don’t know anyone who would vote for them.” A deli owner refused to put a McCain t-shirt in the woindow. The verdict? Scary! Disgusting! Smug!

Imagine. Liberals refusing to vote for McCain. Liberals having opinions that aren’t conservative.

I don’t watch Scarborough’s show much. Has it always been this crazy? Or is it sour grapes?

  2. Rich Says:

Joe’s going to be gone by the end of the year–NBC knows how to count, and they make more money with liberal shows than misanthropic-conservative ones. Joe is going crazy because they’re communicated that future to him, I’m sure.

  3. Peter N. Says:

For a while there, I actually thought Joe Scarborough and his co-hosts took a relatively unbiased view of the election. But that clip, and the panel’s reaction to upper West Side residents not wishing to talk to Willie Geist makes me wonder where I can turn for a rational early morning news show.

  4. pat ar Says:

Can you post a longer clip? Not sure who is calling who hateful?
Is Morin’ Joe name calling or mocking someone else who is name calling?
    Needs more context man!

  5. Peter N. Says:

To see the video referenced by Joey JoJo see this.

  6. Mavis Beacon Says:

Hateful also means “deserving to be hated,” so perhaps Hannity was merely urging his viewers to hate Paul Krugman.

  7. JohnH Says:

The effort to exclusively stigmatize strident liberal political commentary as hate is absurd.” How about efforts to label all strong views as strident? I can think of some Krugman columns as shrill and grating, but it’s not really his tone. He doesn’t often shout the opponent down.

  8. KCinDC Says:

I’d thought Scarborough was moving left to adjust to the new reality. What happened? Maybe he thinks conservative media personalities will be more popular under an Obama administration? He’s probably right about that.

  9. Chuck Says:

Yeah, I’ve been relatively patient with Scarborough, but this was pretty much pure bile. He lifted the Krugman quote out of context and suggested that Krugman had asserted that all Republicans are racist (it’s clear, of course, from th column that Krugman isn’t saying that).

I wonder if Scar only seemed moderate because he was happy that Obama was beating Hillary. But lately he has been increasingly strident. He has also been pushing the Mason-Dixon polls, which show some “tightening,” without contextualizing them, which Halperin actually called him on.

  10. Brigitte Q. Says:

I will have to find a different show to watch while I get ready for work in the morning. As the campaign went on and the probabilty of a McCain victory grew less and less, Joe has grown progressively more offensive and petulant. He’s showing himself as a rabid Republican, cut of the same cloth as most of his brethren with nothing new to add to the old tiresome Republican shtick. His behavior toward Mika is also getting very tiresome. And then there is the ever-present Pat Buchanan.’nuff said, time to find better.

  11. Dave Says:

If MSNBC insists on a conservative in the AM, Smerconish would seem a far more palatable choice. Mika and Mike in the morning.

  12. rupert Says:

After watching Joe call Krugman hateful this morning, I went and read Krugman’s column, which I suppose might have annoyed Joe a bit. The show is getting annoying more because Mika has become the great defender of Sarah Palin; so much for the liberal voice. Not to mention the constant presence of Pat Buchanan.

  13. Glenn Says:

Well, let’s face it: Krugman’s intelligence is pretty hateful to anyone with his head as far up his ass as Scarborough.

  14. dannity Says:

This same morning, he also called the CBS poll that had Obama ahead, “mindlessly partisan and liberal”. This was after he glossed over this morning’s Quinnipiac polls, and asked to feature yesterday’s Mason Dixon ones.

People like Sarborough live in a completely different information universe than the rest of us. I’m almost tempted to just say screw it, and just mock him, but the problem is people like Joe Scarborough have a huge public platform to push their preferred vision of what gets discussed and how. I’m always surprised when I run into people who honestly think Scarborough is a straight shooter.

  15. Tyro Says:

I now think of Joe Scarborough as hateful. He always seemed so affable and moderate…

Joe S. is a smart guy, but his show is simply stupid. I don’t know whether it’s the format or his choice of themes that generally brings subject matter to be ones that are not very intelligent. This causes a vicious cycle in which, while there are glimmers of intelligence out of Joe S., he can’t help but say stupid things: it’s what the format of his show demands.

And Republicans have never gotten over Krugman for having the audacity to criticize Bush and not apologize for it. It was considered, for them, a huge sin that offended their sense of entitlement not to have their failed ideology criticized in public, and they took it personally.

  16. buckethead Says:

It has been interesting to watch Scarborough evolve from right-winger——–>moderate/Bush critic—->right winger.

The show has become a joke. I catch it before I head off to teach in the morning. Lately it has mostly consisted of Joe and Willie blaming the media. Mika shrugging her shoulders and taking a sip of coffee as a rebuttal. Flat out terrible.

  17. ibc Says:

    Pretty hi-larious.

As for Scarborough, now that he and his gang of cretins are destined to wander the political desert for the next decade of two, I find I have no hate in my heart towards them. Contempt, yes. Glee at the prospect of watching them stamp their feet and clench their tiny little fists in impotent rage, of course.

    But “hate”? Never.

  18. GD Smith Says:

I watch Joe after he took over Imus spot, who i used to enjoy during my morning routine. He is one of the silliest Repubs on tv today. And unfortunately Mika has become the sidekick who laughs at every joke, allows herself to be belittled and shows no spine when conversing with the “boys” of the show. Mike Barnicle, read a few of his columns before he was a regular on the show, who knew he was the a__kisser he is on the show. Youknow, the part of their thing i hate most is this msm they rail about as if they are on PBS or something.

  19. CitizenE Says:

“This will pose a dilemma for moderate conservatives. Many of them spent the Bush years in denial, closing their eyes to the administration’s dishonesty and contempt for the rule of law. Some of them have tried to maintain that denial through this year’s election season, even as the McCain-Palin campaign’s tactics have grown ever uglier. But one of these days they’re going to have to realize that the G.O.P. has become the party of intolerance.” Paul Krugman, “The Republican Rump” 11/3/08

Et tu, Joe the Scarborough Fair? “Hateful.” Ah crow, so very hard to swallow.

  20. MosBen Says:

Yeah, I remember hating Joe intensly in the early ’00s, but over the last few years felt he moderated a bit. Maybe this recent bout of petulism is to earn his conservative cred back a bit right before the election. Then, if Obama wins, he can go back to being more moderate to fit with the times or, if McCain wins, claim to his conservative buddies that he was onboard all along.

  21. pseudonymous in nc Says:

I was at a small event headlined by Sen. Claire McCaskill last week, and there was a question from a middle-aged man asking, in fairly emotional terms, what Obama can do to calm the nation after the display of GOP id over these late months. She talked a little about Obama reaching out across the aisle, but that’s clearly not enough.

One thing about the transition, at least, is that it does offer the chance to release the steam on the electoral pressure cooker. A lot of that depends on McCain and Bush behaving appropriately.

  22. JB Says:

Yeah. And now CNN is starting to equalte MSNBC with Fox News.

cambell brown does this alot and it bugs the hell outta me. she’ll say, fox comes from the right and msnbc comes from the left. CNN, however, in all its boring glory is there for the vast middle.

MSNBC has two “liberals” Maddow and olberman. And their shows are on for a two hour block. Joe Scarborough is on for three hours.

that means msnbc has three hours of conservative commentary and two hours of “liberal” commentary. and yet, msnbc is a “liberal” equivalent of fox news?

  23. Rick Says:

Morning Joe has become much harder to watch since the Republican Convention. After that Pat became a fixture and Mika became convinced that MSM was nasty since they “went after” Palin. Since that time, the show has gotten worse and worse, with Joe moving to the right and Mika becoming a female Ed McMahon, smiling and moving her head in agreement. I’m changing from being a everyday watcher to someone who channel surfs during this period.

  24. Glaivester Says:

Excuse me, but Krugman has never won a Nobel prize. He won a Bank of Sweden Prize that attempts to pass itself off as a Nobel Prize.

  25. Lovemonger Says:

Joe is simply reverting to his 1990’s Republican roots. He took a detour down Route Reasonable for a little while, but clearly cannot get over being demoted to a morning show by a couple of lefties and an oncoming Democratic majority.

He is and always will be a Gingrich Republican: power and party first, all else second.

  26. JK Says:

Joe Scarborough is a smarmy, smug knuckle dragging neanderthal.
Morning Joe is a super sized putrid steaming pile of excrement and is dumbing down our culture to death.

  27. Brandon Says:

” Excuse me, but Krugman has never won a Nobel prize. He won a Bank of Sweden Prize that attempts to pass itself off as a Nobel Prize.”

The award is indeed “not a nobel prize”, in that it was established later for a field excluded from the original ones Nobel outlined in his will.

However, when people refer to “nobel prize” they generally refer to the science prizes, which are awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences with the consultation of the world community of academics, have attached a substantial monetary prize, and commemorate a seminal contribution in a particular academic field.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sveriges_Riksbank_Prize_in_Economic_Sciences_in_Memory_of_Alfred_Nobel

If you read the article, you learn that the selection criteria for the economics prize is essentially identical to that of the “real” science prizes.

Both are, however, substantially different from the arbitrary, insubstantial, and politically motivated (and very nonacademic) selection criteria for the Peace Prize. In fact, although it holds the name, I’d be inclined to consider the Peace Prize less of a Nobel than the Economics prize.

  28. PogueMahone Says:

I’ve been increasingly annoyed by “Morning Joe”. Every five minutes Joe rambles on about “Manhattan elitists, Washington elitists, East coast elitists” and blah blah blah.
And the “upper west side liberals” stint they did the other day was the nail in the coffin for me.

I was actually mad at them. Not for being biased or unfair, but for being so stupid. Not to mention invasive.
Here we have normal NYer’s going about their day not bothering anyone, and this idiot with a camera stops people to ask them to vote and even “put their country first” for McCain. These people largely ignore this idiot. But the few that do stop actually disagree politely and “Morning Joes” call them names.

That’s not journalism, that’s just stupidity.

FWIW, try going down to Tyler, TX and ask people to vote for Obama. One would be lucky to find a comment that wouldn’t violate FCC standards for language.
Oh, and one best get outa town before sunset.

    Cheers.

  29. tammanycall Says:

Joey has flipped his lid. Krugman is too intellectual/scholarly to be called “hateful”.

“Excuse me, but Krugman has never won a Nobel prize. He won a Bank of Sweden Prize that attempts to pass itself off as a Nobel Prize.”

    – Whatever, Petty Betty. Debate the relative awesomeness of the various Nobels elsewhere. He’s got one, odds are you, like GOP Joe, don’t, PWNED.

  30. rupert Says:

that means msnbc has three hours of conservative commentary and two hours of “liberal” commentary. and yet, msnbc is a “liberal” equivalent of fox news?

And don’t forget that Pat Buchanan is on MSNBC 24/7…. I do hope they retire the old nazi after election day.

  31. PogueMahone Says:

Oh and btw… I would love to see Smerconish replace Joe.

  32. Russell Aboard M/V Sunshine Says:

Whoa! Paul Krugman is lots of things, but he is neither “strident” nor “hateful.”

Krugman is arguably the best columnist writing today. We are fortunate to have an intelligent economist write so ordinary people can understand what he’s saying at a time when our most serious problems are not ideological, cultural or military, but economic.

As for blowhards like Scarborough, they are not hateful, nor even pathetic. They are simply irrelevant — unless, of course we display the poor judgment to pay attention to them.

This adolescent name-calling is simply an attempt to shout down effective columnists and writers when they cannot be discredited any other way.

  33. daveNYC Says:

In fact, although it holds the name, I’d be inclined to consider the Peace Prize less of a Nobel than the Economics prize.

Given Nobel’s motives, I’d actually consider the Peace Prize to be the most important one. Their selection criteria is really strange though.

  34. MoeLarryAndJesus Says:

Scarborough is as useless as all of the other Repiglican tapeworms who crawled out of Newt’s ass in 1994. He should go back home.

  35. Econobuzz Says:

Simply can’t watch the show. He is a loudmouth overbearing pig. She is just awful. MSNBC has to make a change.

  36. Adam Rakunas Says:

Does Joe have any bile for us West Coast elitists, too? Or is this another one of those “Why New York is better than Los Angeles” kind of things?

  37. allbetsareoff Says:

Scarborough is bitter. I hope he clings to his religion, rather than his guns.

  39. artp Says:

Scarborough is not only petulant, boring and conservative , but he’s also a closet racist. When Obama gave his race speech, Joe said it was a good speech, but.
Joe says I like Obama but. Yesterday he was railing about how arrogant Obama is.

It was very amusing last week when Joe appeared on Race to the White House and the partially obscured show logo behind his back read – Race White

  40. Doug Says:

Krugman thinks there is no MSM bias? Krugman claims ACORN has never committed voter fraud based on factcheck.org. Well that is true so far but today is election day. Krugman leaves out ACORNs massive registration fraud, which can lead to voter fraud. Krugman is short cited and extremely bias. He make fun of Republicans for being fearful of Obama being black or Muslim, yet makes no mention of the irrational fear Democrats have of Palin’s creating a theocracy? Just watch Bill Mahr and you will see irrational unfounded liberal fear of Christians. If Krugman is truly despises this cultural fear mongering on the right, why does he tolerate on the left?

  41. karen marie Says:

in re “irrational fear democrats have of palin’s creating a theocracy”: my fear is not of palin creating a theocracy but of palin getting close enough to that red button to push it. palin believes that the end times will come during her life time. palin believes that she is on a mission from god to bring about those end times.

doug, you might not have noticed but we, as a nation, have just experienced eight years of death and violence, a thorough gutting of the United States Constitution and economic theft on a scale which sets records. if you consider fear of more of that to be irrational, i guess that you are not a student of your own country’s history.

as some brits once said, “no one expects the spanish inquisition.”

    if you haven’t already, vote.

  42. teej Says:

the irrational fear Democrats have of Palin’s creating a theocracy?

Continuous attempts to jam prayer and religiously-inspired rhetoric into our public schools, post of religious law inside federal courtrooms, and the wholesale transfer of public funds to private religious institutions under the “faith-based” initiatives of the Bush administration is just a few of the things we’ve seen from the conservative movement. Palin’s even farther down that road than Bush is…I’m not sure how fearing incremental theocracy was irrational. Then again, a good chunk of that is moot now. Palin: kthxbai!

  43. ross Says:

Krugman is the reason I now read NYT. He is a brilliant and explains things clearly. As he is not from the traditional pundit class, he doesn’t seem beholden to the plutocrat class.
I used to think Scarborough had a bit of integrity, compared to the jackels at FOX, but by his comments, he sounds like he should join them.
