RJC: Obama Will Lead to Second Holocaust
Greg Sargent got his hands on this charming mailer from the Republican Jewish Committee:
Concerned about Barack Obama? You should be. History has shown that a naive and weak foreign policy has resulted in tragic outcomes for the Jewish people.
Charming stuff, and following hot on the heels of a Pennsylvania GOP email making similar fearmongering efforts aimed at Jewish voters. Meanwhile, polling shows that American Jews are likely to vote for the Democratic candidate in the same overwhelming numbers we always do. The whole subplot over the past seven years wherein far-right elements whose political views have nothing in common with those of American Jews and whose candidates are rejected by American Jews in staggering numbers pose as the world’s great defenders of Jewish interests has been very odd. Out of all American ethnic groups, Jews are second only to African-Americans in their loyalty to the Democratic Party and arguably have the most firmly progressive convictions of any group out there. Presumably a Republican could win a larger share of the Jewish vote, but that would have to be accomplished by taking steps to actually move closer to the views and concerns of Jewish voters instead of endless repetition of this kind of fearmongering.

Clearly this is just more evidence that should Obama and the Democrats win and win massively, we must all endeavor to prioritize Republican feelings and govern from the center-right and put as many Republicans as possible into Obama’s White House so that we all can continue to honor the fine contributions that Republicans continue to make to our political discourse and policy agenda.

Yeah, but MY, you can’t just shrug off the existence of the Jewish neocon constituency. There’s a big difference between the way Jewish political sympathies looked before and after the Podhoretz turn in the late 60s and 70s, and the synergy between Likud and the GOP that began to develop in the Reagan years. I’m not sure how big a deal that is when you look at the numbers of votes involved, and I’m not sure there’s a lot of opportunity to shift Jews from the liberal column to the conservative one by playing off security fears. But you can’t just say “Jews have always been liberal, Jews will always be liberal.” Things really did change between the ’60s and the ’90s.

I think brooksfoe, El Cid, and Matt all have a point: yes, there are Republican Jews; yes, Jews overwhelmingly vote Democrat; and yes, these tactics are despicable.
What makes these mailers ineffective, from my vantage point, is that the Republican Jewish population is not comprised of the sort of Republican that responds to vile, fact-blind fearmongering. It’s hard to imagine this mailer resonating with someone who, up until now, had been on the fence.

The Nazis built their case against the Jews in part based on purported ties to Communism/Socialism.

First off, what is with the umlaut on NAIVE? should it be spelled that way, or is it just to emphasize the Germanness of Obama?
Second off, I have a feeling the only people who could kill AIPAC are clear thinking American Jews. How can we make this happen?

Pure speculation, but could it be this sort of thing is aimed less at Jewish voters than warmongering whites in general, who want to burnish their anti-racist credentials with a show of philo-semitism the better to hide their xenophobic and racist attitudes toward much of the rest of the world? I recall reading (in a book by John Dower, I think) about bit of WW II doggerel, ‘our Cohen’s and are Kelly’s will slit their yellow bellies’, as neat a bit of anti-racism in the service of racism as their ever was.

Yes, it’s an older, variant spelling intended to emphasize the fact that the two vowels are pronounced seperately, not as a diphthong. That’s a French usage by the way, not German. (German umlauts a, o and u to show that they sound different from their normal values)
On the larger question here just what American president was weakness and naivete led to disaster for the Jews? FDR? Johnson in 67? Nixon in 63? This is a bizarre assertion without an ounce of history to back it up.

I agree with “J”. These ads aren’t meant to convince Jews to vote Republican. They are aimed at white evangelicals who’s theology requires the Jews to live securely in Israel until Jesus returns and then the Christian armies can convert the Jews or destroy them. They don’t like the idea of another group killing the Jews.

I actually received the flyer and sent it into TPM, perhaps others did too. Regarding the targeting, it was addressed to my wife who happens to have a Jewish sounding surname although she is not Jewish. We got a second (slightly less offensive) mailer presumably targeting Jewish voters addressed differently but also with her name only.
Also, I enjoy how the mailer portrays Obama as both Hitler-esqe speaking before a huge crowd of Germans but at the time as a Chamberlin-esqe appeaser.

In English, it’s called a dieresis (or diaeresis). Like #9 says, it endicates that the two vowels are to be pronounced as two separate syllables. You also see this on Noël, Zoë, coördinate, etc.

The bottom line message here is that unless the US attacks Iran, Iran will nuke Israel. That is the subtext. It’s not just a general “Obama is weak on Jews” thing. It has a specific goal.
And it’s a stupid goal, since Obama is already on board with attacking Iran unless Iran gives up each and every single centrifuge. Obama has said this explicitly.
And since that isn’t going to happen, Obama has now no choice but to attack Iran if Iran doesn’t comply.
Not to mention that his stated methods of “diplomacy” include blockading Iran from imports of gasoline – an act of war in itself.
He has also stated explicitly that he will not allow the UN to overrule a US military attack on Iran. In other words, he will attack Iran WITHOUT ANY UN SANCTION.
And all this for a nuclear energy program which is ENTIRELY LEGAL under the NPT.
I predicted that Bush would attack Iran before the end of his term. Well, he still has two months to go, but I’m not sanguine about the prospects.
I must now predict, however, that Obama will attack Iran before the end of HIS term. Either that, or dump the problem off on the next administration, as Bush appears to be doing. McCain, of course, was never in doubt. McCain would attack Iran within the first six months of his administration. Obama will fart around for a year or two before either attacking or giving up.
