If reports are true and Barack Obama is really going to tap widely respected CBO Director Peter Orszag to head up the Office of Management and Budget (it’s like the CBO, but for the White House, so it makes sense) then I believe that would make him the highest-ranking blogger in the history of the United States of America. I was also going to say that he’d be the highest-ranking executive branch official who’s had the distinct honor of meeting Matthew Yglesias, but I actually met Obama twice so that’s out.
As a blogger, Orszag was only so-so, offering interesting content but not enough of it and presented way too sporadically. His CBO Director’s blog would have been a cutting edge public policy blog in 2004 or 2005, but by 2008 people have come to expect more from a blogger. But as an policy analyst, he’s first rate. And from his new, even more elevated position, perhaps he can organize some kind of interagency policy blog. Think CAPAF’s Wonk Room but with Senate confirmation.

I remember Orzag from the Social Security privatization debate. He pretty much called BS on the privatizers and was one of the most credible people doing it so good for him that he’s getting a sweet Obama job. He seems like the King of All Wonks which is probably what you want at OMB. I can overlook the lack of cutting edge blog posts on topics such as ‘What I had for breakfast’. As a nation we have more important fish to fry than actually frying bacon and then talking about it. Although bacon is pretty good. And eggs.

What about Michael Leavitt? I’m not schooled enough in politics to know if this post is “higher-ranking” than Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Or so I am informed.

The CBO’s logo is a total ripoff of the Omni Consumer Products logo.
Perhaps this is Obama’s subtle way of signaling that he intends to clean up Detroit?

Should we be unhappy at all to see him leave the CBO? His being there was considered a great thing for health care reform.

We should not be unhappy that he is leaving CBO (in terms of health care policy). OMB has a lot more authority — CBO just plays an information (and score-keeping) role. You want smart dedicated folks like Orszag at key posts like OMB.

So I take it this doesn’t count?

I’m obsessing about this idea, but why not Voinivich? That would give us another Senate Seat.
