Mona Sutphen was recently announced as one of Barack Obama’s Deputy Chiefs of Staff. This seems like a good opportunity to plug the book she recently co-authored with my colleague Nina Hachigian. It’s called The Next American Century: How the U.S. Can Rise While Others Thrive. It combines a tour de horizon of the rising powers, and makes the case for the vital importance of a form of American leadership that involves cooperation with the other major powers on the common challenges we face.
Video here:
I think these are important issues that haven’t gotten the attention they deserve in the public debate over the past few years. Looks like they may get the attention they deserve inside the White House. And note that the Obama team continues to fill out the White House staff before getting around to the high-profile cabinet slots people are eager to hear about.

Have you told Nina Hachigian I think she’s awesome yet?

Wow, the “Next American Century”. That sounds familiar.
And why do so many young Dem foreign policy pros come from the corporate strategic consulting business?

Great hire by Obama, they reflect his policies very well.

But I do think the authors are right that in their central contention that the “pivotal powers” of China, Europe, India, Japan, and Russia, each have “an enormous stake in the world economy and a keen desire to thwart common threats.”

HACHIGIAN!!!!
Gesundheit!
(apologies to Ms. Hachigian)

Given that Ms. Sutphen and Ms. Hachigian (correctly, I believe) assert that we need to engage rising powers in order to benefit from them, I think it would be interesting if their next work was co-authored by their counterparts in these other countries.

Yeah, Next American Century is a rather off-putting and also very misleading title. The US is important, but not that important.

A 1904 balance of powers.

Sounds good.

It’s not hard to understand. The major country that develops renewable domestic power sources and has the industry to exploit that advantage will rule this ball of dirt.
You want American domination? Then you should want hardcore energy development.

So can we look forward to another PNAC in the future?
I am delighted to learn the younger generation of US foreign policy hands is blind to our quest for global domination.

First the churrascaria, then many caipirinhas, maybe some samba and finally we liberate the favelas.

What’s with the stirring music and political ad visuals? It’s not an inherently interesting enough topic to just have them talk? Who looks at this kind of stuff anyway? Substance over style, please.

Mr. Kervick,
They were both State Department and NSA staff before they worked in consulting.
