I Work Inside a Metaphorical Factory

Time’s Michael Scherer has a piece titled “Inside Obama’s Ideas Factory” which is all about how we here at CAP are super-awesome. Scherer writes that “it is difficult to overstate the influence in Obamaland of CAP.” So keep in mind when you read this blog that everything I write is incredibly influential.

We really ought to dispense with the confusing habit of giving names to people. Rather, you are Number 9.

  2. MikeJ Says:

Oh grate. Now we’ll awl have too speel like this.

  3. RL Says:

    This joke is getting old.

  4. Geoff Says:

    Influential?

Who is this Matt Yglesias you keep talking about?

  5. Joe Strummer Says:

Influential, ehh. Persuaded me that maybe some of my aversion to urban planning was misguided? Yes.

  6. low-tech cyclist Says:

Clearly we should all abandon our own blogs, and post comments here instead to piggyback on Matt’s incredible influence.

  7. bdbd Says:

Actually, it’s the comments that are influential. Matt is a mere conduit, a gathering place.

  8. dannity Says:

We have blogs? Jesus, I need to get to work. I haven’t updated since the turn of the century.

I’ll never be influential at this rate!

  9. Client #11 Says:

Yes, you are influential, which is why your anti-Agent Zero propaganda campaign must be stopped at all costs. So it is with great glee that I point out that another of your pajama incubated lies has been proven false:

    - Injured Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said Tuesday that a second tour of duty with the Warriors was more than likely to happen had his own team low-balled him during free agency this past summer.

“I was close to going back,” Arenas said. “If (the Wizards) would have flinched any, I would have gone back to Golden State. … My injury, they felt like they didn’t have to throw any money at me because there was nobody there. And then they found out (Baron Davis) opted out and realized (the Warriors) were still looking at me.

“I was surprised (by the Warriors’ max offer) because I talked to BD the night before and he said he wasn’t leaving. What surprised both of us was Elton Brand opting out (from the Clippers).”

Hi , my name is Matt , I have a wife and three kids and I work in an idea factory.

Meanwhile, the intellectually honest and curious might want to try to figure out why – well before the spate of CAP-boosting articles – I put them on my list of reasons to oppose BHO.

If MattY wants to be honest with his readers for a change, perhaps he can discuss the massive strawman he linked to a few days ago. For instance, he could do his darnedest to present a logical argument claiming that CAP doesn’t want to bring back something that would have the impact of shutting down what ThinkProgress calls “hate radio”, i.e., Rush et al.

  12. myglesias Says:

I also like to pretend this is my blog, and Matt is just a commentator. To help, after posting I turn my laptop upside down.

    How does that help?

  13. RoboticGhost Says:

Matt once responded to a question I had about water rights. My question influenced his decision to answer it. I am therefore the 10th most influential person in politics.

  14. Caldem Says:

Since CAP is clearly the key recruiting station for future Democratic leaders, perhaps you can figure out a way to recruit beyond the ivies? A Democratic establishment that doesn’t recruit from kids with diverse backgrounds is pretty useless.

  15. Don Williams Says:

I thought Scherer’s article was hilarious. I particularly liked this part:

“It is difficult to overstate the influence in Obamaland of CAP, a group with roughly $25 million in annual funding from mostly anonymous individuals, corporations and unions.”

    ———-
I guess that’s how Scherer daintily tiptoes around the issue of how Herb Sandler buttfucked Wachovia for $25 Billion with a bunch of mortgages whose value has not ..er..been quite what the Wachovia CEO (correction: former CEO) estimated. And, in a bit of Robin Hood roleplaying, ole Herb used a small part of the Wachovia loot to fund CAP.

Which may explain the ..uh..subdued tone CAP and Obamaland seems to be taking to this whole subprime/derivatives business. Hercule Periot evidently has nothing to worry about insofar as the investigation biz goes. Nobody in Washington DC has a clue.

I think they should play the Pink Panther Theme at the inauguration party.

  16. 24AheadDotCom Says:

Don Williams: could you put a longer, sourced version of your comment on a permanent page somewhere?

  17. Don Williams Says:

I also liked the part where Scherer claims CAP briefed the guys at Saturday Night Live.

Maybe ole Herb and Soros should ask Podesta who came up with that Saturday Night Live satire that prominently featured Herb and Soros:

Also, my browser must have a bug because I did a text search on Scherer’s article and got zero hits for “Yglesias”.

Well I did pluck Ezra Klein out of the obscurity of UC Santa Cruz and put him on the path to success. But presumably John Podesta (Knox University, Georgetown Law) and my boss Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri (American University) know some non-Ivy people as well. Or maybe this should be the responsibility of our CampusProgress.org team run by Rob Anderson (Georgetown), Kay Steiger (University of Minnesota), and Jesse Singal (University of Michigan).

  23. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Matt: “everything I write is incredibly influential.”

And incredibly ignorant, conceited, and lame.

The US is doomed if Obama listens to clowns like you.

Which, of course, he actually doesn’t. Especially you.

Anybody heard anything about Matt’s book lately – aside from the lame ad at the top of the blog?

    Thought not.

How many copies sold, Matt? Outside of Pyongyang, North Korea, that is… (Old joke)

  24. G-d Says:

Matt, if Barack adopts some sensible ideas about transportation and rail travel then I will call you influential.

  25. Jay Says:

I don’t get it. Openly Left people have told me that Obama is not progressive so the CAP can’t be influential. Unless YOU’RE NOT PROGRESSIVE EITHER!!!!!

  26. joe from Lowell Says:

    CAP: Centrists for American Progress.

    I love it.
