John Dingell rallying coalition of lobbyists to help urge House Democrats to support his effort to hang onto the chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Is putting it out in the open likely to blunt its chance of being successful?
Pittsburgh found its way out of the steel wilderness. Detroit has to find its way out of the car wilderness. Even if the manufacturers live on, they will employ fewer people. On the umm, sort of bright side, Detroit (and Pittsburgh) are two places that might benefit from global warming — they have lots of natural fresh water sources and they aren’t too hot in the summer.
But universal health care would help Detroit, especially, immeasurably, and I for one would invest resources there rather than in Detroit in particular.
As a CSPAN aficianado AND a big fan of competence in general, please put my vote in for more Waxman and less Dingell. Waxman is commanding and effective in his role. Dingell is sadly dingellish.
Beyond any ideology, I hope we will see the era of political acumen and competence. That is definitely a change I could get behind.
I think the outcome of this fight will be the biggest signal of what’s going to happen in the new congress. If Waxman can outgun Dingell, it suggests the House members have read the political tea leaves and are ready to move in a progressive direction. If he can’t, expect more of what we’ve had for the last 2 years.
I think this is bigger than who Obama picks for what cabinet post.

Detroit’s hammerlock on public policy needs to come to an end.

eww, I just went to his website and was asked to sign up for something called a “Dingellcast.”
I don’t know what that is, but it doesn’t sound wholesome.

Who was the President-Elect that said, “power doesn’t concede”? Smart guy.
