Because everyone’s a blogger now, the Council on Foreign Relations is organizing an online discussion/debate in the form of a blog comment thread — and I’m invited! You can see Peter Beinart’s leadoff post here, followed by a comment from Will Marshall and there should be something from me responding to Marshall up soon.

Is ‘preventive war’ a euphemism for war of aggression? And since when was it a liberal foreign policy goal to limit nuclear proliferation? It’s only the neocon wing of the GOP that things more nukes is a great thing. Reagan proposed eliminating all nuclear weapons at the 1986 Reykjavik summit with Gorbachev with the only sticking point being the US refusal to confine SDI to a lab. Is Dick Lugar a liberal? Beinart is off to a fine start of false dichotomies and the usual bullshit.

Note: I’d post this comment on the CFR blog but I’m not an invited expert i.e. I wasn’t duped into supporting the Iraq War by my friends in a glorified social club.

Matt gave Will Marshall and Peter Beinart the Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka bodyslam off the top rope in his very first comment. You called BS on their tough guy nonsense right out of the gate. Beinart and Marshall’s tough guy polices have GM on the verge of being sold to China and Iran writing the timetable for the US exit in Iraq. Maybe leading with your chin like a moron isn’t the best strategy guys. Tex Cobb was a tough guy. He also has brain damage.

It’s interesting that he properly used the term “preventive war” and then proceeded to treat it as if it weren’t the ultimate crime against peace. Bitch slap, indeed.

This seems like an oddly dated discussion, with three pundits - none of whom so far as I am aware has any experience in the actual conduct of foreign policy, international business, etc. - discussing abstract ideological issues like preventive war, in terms redolent of 2004.
