Can’t Mention Someone Named Rudy Without a “Rudy Can’t Fail” Reference

rudy_1.jpg

A lot of John Hollinger’s purported surprises thus far this season don’t seem very surprising. Like he lists Rudy Fernandez’ good play as a surprise, and then immediately concedes “OK, most folks aren’t surprised by the idea that Fernandez can play, not after he lit up the U.S. squad in the second half of that epic gold-medal match in Beijing.” Right. I expected good things. People forget that the caliber of play in the Spanish league is higher than in Division I college basketball. Lots of European prospects get drafted very young and with minimal professional experience. Fernandez isn’t that kind of rookie, he’s 23 years old and he’d played extensively and well in the ACB and in international competition.

Likewise, why is Hollinger surprised that Andris Biedrins is playing well? He’s a good player, he played well last year. Young very good big man plays somewhat better than he did the previous year! Not so surprising. Do I need to write my Biedrins blog post again.

    Matt:

Do you think Americans will ever catch on to following international hoops? I don’t mean following other national leagues but at least games between national teams? Maybe there is a potential of following Eurobasket as I believe there are competition during the NBA’s off season.

  2. James Gary Says:

There’s also “A Message To You (Rudy)—” and I’m sure, given that “Rudy” signified “rude boy,” or young ska-or-reggae fan— many others, should one care to Google the topic.

  3. rea Says:

Anyone who sat through the Republican primaries knows Rudy can too fail. You must be drinking brew for breakfast . . .

Warriors love! How about Morrow too? For an undrafted rookie, the kid can play. I can’t remember the last time I saw a guy with that good of a shooting stroke on the Dubs.

  5. joejoejoe Says:

I’m still not sure if Biedrins is a product of Nellieball. Not too many Warriors are all that interested in rebounding.

Any thoughts on the AI/Billups trade? It looks like a win/win deal for both Detroit and Denver. Detroit is playing some exciting ball since the trade with Rasheed playing out of his head, Prince at Point Forward, and Arron Afflalo looking like a young defensive stopper. CB is what he’s been the last few years, a high EFG% PG who doesn’t make mistakes, a top 4 NBA point guard.

  6. joejoejoe Says:

Dave Berri isn’t all that. Below is a post from FreeDarko that questions some of Berri’s economic assumptions that links to none other than everybody’s favorite breakfast blogger & Swiss propagandist, Matthew Yglesias.

  7. John Says:

I’ve been banging the Beidrins drums for some time now. He’s always good for 3-4 blocks, 10 boards, and 50 percent shooting for my fantasy team.

    I need a real life.

How about our very own GM back in his playing days? Mully Flattop FTW. Richmond could also stroke it, from what I can remember of the Run TMC era.

  9. Dave Says:

I’m from Portland, and I was filled with joy when I watched Rudy dunk on Dwight Howard in the Olympics. European ball is much more exciting and more team orientated. Unfortunately you get more flops and foul pleading. All the Rudy haters are still living in 1993 (the Bulls).

I’ve watched 2 Warriors games this year and it’s obvious that Biedrins has taken a big step forward. His pick n roll game has not suffered without Baron Davis (or Monte Ellis) playing. He’s just overall playing with more confidence and assertiveness.

A big part is the refs. He used to be one of the most penalized players in the league. This often limited his minutes (it hasn’t just been Nellie). Now, officials respect his game on both sides of the floor which is big for a both-ends-of-the-floor rebounder.

  11. Trieu Says:

My only problem with the Hollinger article is that he suggests that, if a player’s stats are “freakishly” above normal, we definitely worry about regression. But this implies that if a player’s stats are only above or well above normal, that it can be safely read as simply a result of player improvement. This has it wrong.

  12. nbt Says:

The 2007 GSW team that electrified Freedarko types had the following core: B-Davis, J-Rich, Ellis, Harrington, Barnes, Pietrus, Biedrins, Jackson.

Interesting that 18 months later, only the last two of those guys are still playing on the team (Ellis and Harrington are injured), yet we still think of the team as possessing the same “Nellieball” identity.

Holy shit, I agree with Al on something. Free Darko sucks balls. It’s like reading Pitchfork, but for basketball.
