David Axelrod will be an Assistant to the President (unassuming title but very important) and Robert Gibbs will be Press Secretary. Both performed essentially similar functions during the campaign so it’s not that thrilling. You keep hearing speculation about this cabinet department and that, but I think we should expect a continued filling out of the White House staff to be a major point of emphasis.

Joe Gibbs was a good press secretary in the 1980s, but I don’t think he has what it takes to manage an NFC East administration in the 21st century.

Oh, I don’t know. Naming a former Redskins coach press secretary is a fascinating move. I don’t think anything like it has been done before.

While his top level people are extremely important, Barak is going to distinguish himself with the second and third tier appointments. Thats where the execution begins, and we’ve seen from his campaign that he is very concerned with the tactical execution of any strategy he pursues.

Joe Gibbs is also an outstanding NASCAR figure which will help with one of Obama’s weakest demographics.

In other news, Daniel Snyder has just hired David Plouffe as GM of the Redskins.

You see, you can’t go anywhere else on the web for this sort of thing. That’s why we’re hooked. Where else can you get omnivorous, intermittently-brilliant analysis punctuated by so many priceless howlers?

Its a shame that McCain didn’t win, because I understand that he planned to name the entire defensive line of the Steelers as his press secretaries.
Or was it the Green Bay Packers . . . ?
November 7th, 2008 at 8:01 am
‘Assistant to the President’ is an unassuming title? I had no idea.
November 7th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Did Obama make him change his name to increase his appeal to white guys? “Joe the Spokesman”?
November 7th, 2008 at 8:19 am
David Axelrod will be an Assistant to the President (unassuming title but very important)
They should have left out the “to the” to make it more assuming.
November 7th, 2008 at 8:41 am
An assuming title just makes an ass out of you and ming.

What should be of concern is the rumor being bandied about that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. may be appointed EPA administrator. Mr. Kennedy is a total scientific whackjob and conspiracy monger whose anti-vaccination stands are totally irresponsible. His claims about links between mercury in vaccines (which were removed 6 years ago by the way) and autism have been totally discredited by the medical research community in study after study. Allowing this crackpot anywhere within 10 miles of any government agency with a scientific responsibility is the height of irresponsibility. The Obama campaign complained long and loud about Bush administration appointment of hacks to positions in government agencies like NASA. Time to hold their feet to the fire to put their money where there mouths were.
November 7th, 2008 at 8:51 am
Or maybe that was Joe the Kennedy……
November 7th, 2008 at 8:55 am
So….does anyone else use the West Wing as their frame of reference when hearing about these appointments?
Assistant to the President? Now was that the Toby Ziegler, Josh Lyman character? Or was it the Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) character?
November 7th, 2008 at 9:04 am
Everyone in the White House is an assistant to the president. The Press Secretary is one too, but they also have the separate title of press secretary. No specific responsibilities pertain to the job.
November 7th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I love the Robert Gibbs choice. This guy is clear, calm, and sharp. He can play on anyones turf. He gave Hannity a taste of his medicine after the second debate. Gibbs will be a great asset as the point man for Obama’s White House.
November 7th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Is Robert Gibbs the fellow who called ignoramus Sean Hannity and Fox News anti-Semitic for hosting that special program on Obama’s associations in which that crazy loon from NY was the chief “scholarly” witness?

Average Todd just answered my question. Yeah, he’s smooth.

Kent, Josh was Deputy Chief of Staff, Toby was Communications Director (or something like that), Sam, and later Will, was Deputy Communications Director (or something like that), and CJ was Press Secretary. The closest to “Assistent to the President” was probably Charlie, but my guess is Axelrod is doing way more than holding the President’s bag and such. The best analogy is probably to Rove.
November 7th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Actually, to keep things West Wing, the best analogy might be Mandy, though that doesn’t bode well for Axelrod.

It’s thrilling to appoint accomplished and competent people to a President’s administration. It really is. After all, we just have seen another person (Julie Myers) resign from the current administration for doing a heckuva job.
November 7th, 2008 at 11:39 am
What’s going to be done with Bill Burton? He did a terrific job as Obama spokesman.

Charlie would be Reggie Love – I think the job is called personal aide. Rove I think is equivalent to Axelrod + Plouffe – he handled campaign strategy and execution + campaign message. Axelrod seemed to be more focused on campaign message only, Plouffe handled the strategy and execution.
I wonder why Plouffe isn’t joining the administration?
November 7th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I imagine Plouffe will be asleep on a beach somewhere for the next year or so. That’s what I would do.
