Former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld endorses Barack Obama, joining Reps. Jim Leach and Wayne Gilchrest, General Colin Powell, and former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson on the growing list of moderate Republicans jumping on the Obandwagon.
I wonder if there is any concious effort among moderate conservatives to wrest the party away from the extremist conservatives.
For a while I was thinking that it was economic vs. cultural conservatives, but it isn’t. While one side does seem to have all the bible thumpers, McCain is also pushing the tax-cut pandering and nebulous budget-cutting of the extremist supply siders.
The Republicans are going to lose big in November. If the moderate Republicans jump ship, they can more easily pin the failure on the extremists and create a Republican version of the DLC. If they can’t form a visible, collective block, they will be powerless in their party.

I think this will do the opposite, in part because McCain is at the head of the ticket. The core of the party will be the extremists who will regard the defectors as traitors and blame the loss on not being “pure” enough. If a more ideological acceptable candidate had been nominated at the top of the ticket, like Sen. Inhofe, then there’d be a greater chance of the moderates repudiating their extremists in the wake of defeat. As it is, people will blame McCain for the loss.
When the head of the American Nazi Party thinks the GOP candidate is a “total nutter” and decides “I prefer the Negro”, then you know McCain is screwed.
[I wonder if these are the Liberal Fascists Jonah Goldberg wrote his book about? Or just Fascists voting for liberals?]
Will Palin accuse Obama of being a National Socialist now?
Yes, but Obama lost the critical endorsement of Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild. And remember that woman at the DNC meeting who screamed that Obama was an “inadequate black male”? She’s on a bus tour for McCain in Pennsylvania.
When this election’s over we’ll wonder why we ever thought McCain could win.
There are also a number of retired moderate Republican members of the Virginia State Senate who have endorsed both Senatorial candidate Mark Warner and Senator Obama.

Just to show the truth is stranger than fiction even if fiction really really tried hard to be weird as f**k, the Obamania is even spreading to the white supremacists: http://www.esquire.com/print-this/racists-support-obama-061308

I call them sensible Republicans. That at least allows us to include Adelman, who’s no moderate.

Also Scott McClellan, who we should see if we can give back.

Yep – Scott McClellan. And Ken “Cakewalk” Adelman!

Ah, just saw there is a post below about Adelman’s endorsement. Congrats to Obama for getting such a prestigous endorsement.

NOBODY cares who Bill Weld endorses.

Congrats to Obama for getting such a prestigous endorsement.
Indeed: until Al jumps, Cakewalk Ken has a lock on Biggest Fucking Tool To Endorse Obama.
