Today in Panda Science

xin_03210051208246873072811_1.jpg

Scientists working in China have announced the completion of the project to sequence the entire giant panda genome. That’s perhaps good news for panda fans such as myself everywhere. At the same time, one has to worry about the possibility of China arming itself with advanced, genetically enhanced panda warriors. Initially, they’ll disarm and confuse their opponents with massive cuteness. But then, just as enemy soldiers are busy trying to take snapshots, they enter panda attack mode.

Something along the lines of Kung Fu Panda is definitely something to be concerned about.

On a somewhat unrelated topic: Matt, is there a reason why you don’t give photo or illustration credits? Because I’m pretty sure that none of the last ten images (including the one above) you’ve used to accompany your posts are in the public domain—and even if they are you should still be giving the creator a credit line.

  2. James Gary Says:

giving the creator a credit line.

Whoops, should’ve rephrased that. No jokes about my supposed crypto-fundamentalism, please.

  3. sunsin Says:

That’s about as realistic a scenario for war between the US and China as any I’ve seen from the right wing. They’ll probably adopt it any minute now.

  4. The CAP Cleaning Staff Says:

Matt was very good at crediting photos when he was an indy and later at the Atlantic. So it seems like there should be a good explanation for the lack of credits now that he’s at MJ.

My guess is that Mother Jones has actually licensed reproduction rights (without the need for attribution) for the photos he’s using, and so no credits are needed. Otherwise you’re right, he needs to get on that.

  5. The CAP Cleaning Staff Says:

Did I say Mother Jones? Haha, I was thinking of Kevin Drum, the /other/ blogger who made a sudden venue change this summer. Sorry for the ridiculous comment.

We must not allow a panda genome gap!

This is a serious problem and I think that we should start preparing countermeasures. The missile shields that will defend us against non-existing Iranian ballistic missiles bearing non-existing nuclear warheads will have to get second priority.

As someone observed. if we will get a perfect sky shield, we will be attacked from containers born to our shores in cargo ships. Now, imagine our custom agents opening a containers and be instantly overwhelmed by the massive cuteness of pandas!

So, we need to re-think our civil defences. On the other front, what cute weapons can we have? I read that Navy is training dolphins. Dolphins can be kind of cute. Also, seals and sorority sisters.

  9. Jeffrey Davis Says:

Cute fighting pandas sounds like the Eddie Izzard gag about a transvestite airborne brigade. The all important element of surprise.

  10. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Deadly preprogrammed weapons don’t get cuter than this:
