The Foreign Policy Contrast

As soon as the debate subject matter shifted to foreign policy, an extremely clear contrast opened up. I have some disagreements on national security issues with Biden, but he’s clearly able to express totally genuine opinions on issues he’s spent time thinking about. Palin, by contrast, is mechanistically reciting talking points. She’s clearly never given a minute’s thought to Darfur.

Maybe you haven’t been paying attention, but Palin is a maverick on a Team of Mavericks. She would just maverick her way over to Darfur and maverick a solution out of maverick air.

  2. MikeJ Says:

What if Darfur reared its head and flew into American airspace? Alaska is where they’d head.

  3. Freedom Fry Says:

McClellan isn’t in charge in Afghanistan is he?

  4. phil Says:

Palin attributes “city on a hill” to Reagan. John Winthrop had Reagan beat by three and a half centuries.

  5. Ed Marshall Says:

She at one point started talking about denying nuclear *energy* to different countries. That’s kicking the legs out of decades of non-proliferation doctrine. When asked about when the U.S. would use nuclear weapons, she at least new she was on scary ground and just refused to answer the question and started talking about Afghanistan.

  6. lfv Says:

What the hell is a “national security freedom”?

  7. Steve Sailer Says:

“She’s clearly never given a minute’s thought to Darfur.”

Jeez, Matt, stop trying to talk me into voting Republican! I’d love to have a President whose thought processes re Darfur took less than 60 seconds:

“Darfur — any conceivable American national interest at stake there?

    “No.

“Okay, time to think about something else.”

  8. brenna Says:

Considering that the genocidal war in Darfur has been ongoing for over 15 years and her state just recently decided to still not yet pass a divestment bill, no, she’s never given any thought whatsoever to the rape, burning, mutilation, and murder of over four hundred thousand people.

I bet she doesn’t even know where the DRC is.

  9. Ed Marshall Says:

“Darfur — any conceivable American national interest at stake there?

That’s not what she did. Let her have her team of experts from the Weekly Standard tell her all about it and she’d have an answer for that. She just didn’t know what what she was supposed to say.

  10. Ed Smithe Says:

That was the least of her worries last night. Seriously, the vast majority of Americans have no idea what’s going on in Darfur…and thank God. The last place we need to be is in Darfur chasing down the spectre of “genocide.”

Although it was apparent that she had no idea what was going on there. The neocons are a step behind the liberals is getting to that area of the world to rid it of want and poverty and make it safe for democracy. Middle East first, then Russia, then Central Asia and the Caucuses, then it’s a toss up between North Korea and China, and then Africa. The United States, needless to say, always comes last.

  11. Hector Says:

Actually, Matt, a lot of evangelical Christians are quite interested in Darfur and the war/genocide in Sudan. I have an evangelical friend who helps manage a refugee camp out there.

  12. Kenny B. Says:

I bet she doesn’t even know where the DRC is.

Of course she does. Like most places, it borders Alaska.

  13. bob Says:

You don’t have to put troops on the ground in order to make a difference in the ongoing genocide in Darfur, and anyone who suggests you do is either actively misleading you or of Palin level intelligence.
