Sen. Hagel’s Wife For Obama

It came up at dinner tonight that neither Chuck Hagel nor Colin Powell yet seems to have made a presidential endorsement and was all set to do a post on the subject, when along comes word that the Hagel striptease is moving forward a bit with his wife stepping forward to endorse Obama, while the Senator himself stays on the sidelines. Weird.

  1. lampwick Says:

I really do think his wife should keep her clothes on.

Just another distraction for Rich Lowry.

  2. hermit greg Says:

Jim Leach’s wife came out for Obama—or anyway, she donated money to him—before Leach did, too.

  3. Joffré Says:

Maybe it’s just a Midwest thing that you, as an elitist East Coast Liberal, don’t get. Chet Culver’s wife endorsed Edwards for the primaries in Iowa while the governor himself stayed neutral.

  4. benjamin Says:

Mark my words: One of them will endorse right after the last debate.

    You heard it here first.

  5. Dismayed Liberal Says:

I think that they may have privately already told Obama that they will endorse him, and are leaving the timing of these announcements up to the Obama campaign. That way, the Obama campaign can get maximum benefit from these endorsements by using them tactically to manage the news cycles in the last month of the campaign.

  6. Nicholas Beaudrot Says:

Don’t ever use the words “Hagel” and “striptease” in the same sentence.

  7. weichi Says:

I have to think that if Powell were going to endorse Obama, he would have done it by now. Not going to happen.

Hagel, he’ll endorse Obama a few minutes after they call the election for him on Nov 4.

  8. Para Sailin Says:

You betcha Obama will be going after all the gosh darn white women in DC.

  9. Adagio Says:

I’m fairly certain I heard Hagel say recently that he would not be endorsing either candidate.

  10. raft Says:

i also think one or both of them will endorse.

They’ll do it before the November election but after Obama’s victory is in the bag.

  11. Freedom Fry Says:

As a reasonable Republican, isn’t Hagel practically guaranteed a job in a future Obama administration? He might as well endorse and put us all out of our misery. I wonder what’s holding him back? The attention or is he refraining from hurting McCain’s feelings?

  12. 55 Says:

Wasn’t it recently reported somewhere that Powell was going to endorse but Bush personally called him and asked him not to?

  13. Anonymous Says:

Willie Brown, former mayor of San Francisco, has a column in the SF Chronicle:

“My contacts in the Obama campaign said President Bush himself called Powell and asked him to hold off. Asked him not to embarrass the administration … We’ll see – but Powell is definitely not endorsing John McCain.”

  14. Comment Says:

Colin Powell’s error filled UN speech dangles like a toilet bowl over Powell’s head – stinking up his reputation.

Powell is worried that elements withing Obama’s admin will hang Powell out to dry during future investigations into the propaganda campaign.

Nevertless, once Powell is sure Obama will win – he will endorese Obama.

Meanwhile – everyone now sees that big toilet bowl on top of Powell’s head and wonders when it will tip over.

  15. William Says:

I kinda wish Hagel would just go out and endorse Scott Kleeb! He’s way behind in the polls, but Hagel could make a difference in Nebraska — unlike in the rest of the country, where 99% of the 0.1 percent of the voting public that have heard of him already are aware of his heterodox quasi-pro-Obamism.

  16. eric k Says:

Doesn’t the fact that they are high ranking republicans who haven’t endorsed McCain pretty much speak for itself?

  17. pseudonymous in nc Says:

Doesn’t the fact that they are high ranking republicans who haven’t endorsed McCain pretty much speak for itself?

Quite. Condi Rice: no endorsement. Oh, she said that Palin is a governor of a state.

Hagel presumably doesn’t want to be included in the same sentence as Ho Lieberman. Can’t blame him, really.

  18. matty does Says:

Besides fanboyz, who the fuck cares what Chuck Hagel, his wife, or Colin Powell do or think.

  19. Tim Says:

I expect Obama will roll out endorsements from Republicans in the last week of the campaign, to keep momentum going into the election. Everyone knows Hagel and Powell support Obama, but has Dick Lugar endorsed McCain? That could actually mean something in Indiana if he endorses Obama.

  20. McKingford Says:

Oh man, not again with Colin Powell. For some mysterious reason liberals project all these awesome virtues on him. And he always lets them down.

Keep waiting for Colin Powell to do the right thing, people. It’s going to be a fucking long wait.
