Riding the Rails

Press release from the Obama campaign blares: “Indiana Amtrak Machinist to Attend Presidential Debate as Guest of Michelle Obama.” The accompanying text doesn’t actually say anything about rail policy, but I for one still look forward to the hegemony of Big Train as an interest group.

I saw Biden’s address on foreign policy a few weeks ago at Cincinnati’s Union Terminal, a lovely old art deco train station that now houses several museums.

Before his prepared remarks, Biden said that an Obama administration would make it a train station once more. The Chicago–DC Cardinal line makes a stop there still, if at 3 am, but this would be better:

One of my 3rd cousins is a lobbyist for the machinist union in a big Northeastern state and he’s having a fantastic time creating new commuter rail lines and creating jobs for his members. It’s hard work and you need to make sure the people who help get elected and you buy off the opposition (which is *%$* expensive, building tunnels under suburban town centers and all).

I already love these guys, but hearing about what they’ll do for Amtrak makes my heart skip a beat.

Please, Matt, we prefer the term “Lionel-Industrial Complex,” which better capture the idea that we’re all just overgrown boys playing with choo-choos. ;)

Unions are bad and trains are bad, so this person must be double-bad. Talk about questionable associations!

Sign me up. Let’s see, aside from NARP, are there any other passenger rail lobbies?
