What else does the backup long-snapped do, other than practice? Even if he has another job, at some point in the week, he has to practice that, no? I mean, what the fuck?
To be fair to the guy he was the back-up. And I don’t think NFL teams spend much time giving their back-up long snappers reps in practice (but apparently they should).
Why on earth would the coaches send in a linebacker to do the long snapping, instead of the center, back-up center, or guard with center experience? Inexplicable.

I dunno. The same reason people who have never played football nevertheless feel like they can talk intelligently about it?
As long as we are discussing tired catch phrases, did anybody see the updated ‘Whaaaaassssuuup’ commercial redone as a political message? It’s very funny and eerily accurate if you view the original Bud ad side by side. (h/t oyster)
It is my understanding that while one “snaps” the ball, the motion is rather like “throwing,” but with a guide hand as well. Also, long-snapping is considerably different from even shotgun snaps; a center would not necessarily have experience long-snapping.
That being said, I agree that “snapping” is the correct term.
The play did tie the game, but the Steelers were about to punt from deep in their own territory, ahead only two. The Giants would have had better field position after that punt then they ended up with after the free kick. So really, Eli’s drive down field on that possession won the game.
Granted, it was tied instead of the Giants trailing, which changes the dynamic a little, but two things: 1) we’ve seen Eli handle the pressure of being down in a bigger game with even less time; and 2) it’s not like the Steelers lost by 1 point, where the difference between winning and losing was that safety.
Of course, they wouldn’t have had to worry about their backup long-snapper if their backup punter wasn’t playing on what appeared to be two busted hamstrings. And they wouldn’t have had to worry about their backup punter if their backup WR and OT, and backup-backup HB, had played better — or even if their backup CB had been able to keep the Giants’ passing game under control. Then again, Roethlisberger was once again playing like he had ridden one too many motorcycles, which is not exactly a winning strategy against a defense like the Giants’ that appears to consist of 11 men capable of standing upright and coordinating their limbs.
As a far-away (Europe) Steelers fan, I am always looking for new sites with Pittsburgh information.
I grew up with Terry Bradshaw, Mean Joe, and the rest of the 70’s Steel Curtain.
As an Australia-based Steelers fan, I found your blog on google and read a few of your other Steelers posts.
I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

The back-up long-snapper is a pro-bowl linebacker. I presume he is practicing his main job more than he is practicing long-snapping.
Unfortunate that a close game wound up turning on the Steelers’ special teams turning into a makeshift triage.

Long-snapping has to be most unnatural movement regularly made by any player in any sport.

From what I understand, they had no back-up longsnapper. They held some sort of try-outs on the sideline to see who could do it.

“Snapping” is not “throwing” and one certainly NEVER throws a snap. You snap the snap…

“[L]ong snappers are the most anonymous people on the field this side of the game officials. The only time they seem to be noticed is when they mess up.”
