Palin on Freedom of the Press

I guess any time she speaks sentences that were clearly intended to be in the English language she “beats expectations” and Rich Lowry sees starbursts so I suppose we should count this as another triumph:

As we send our young men and women overseas in a war zone to fight for democracy and freedoms, including freedom of the press, we’ve really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting the freedom of the press, and then the press, though not taking advantage and exploiting a situation, perhaps they would want to capture and abuse the privilege. We just want truth, we want fairness, we want balance.

Yes, indeed, a mutually beneficial relationship with those fighting the freedom of the press.

I would like to respond to her statement, but I’m not sure what her point is and I read it several times. By the last word I felt like I had to start all over again. I can only do that so many times and then I have to move on.

  2. Anthony Damiani Says:

Translation: The press should be nice to soldiers.
Encrypted translation: Damned lefty surrender-niks kept talking down the war!

  3. Joe Smith Says:

    Unintentional hilarity.

  4. Calvin Jones and the 13th Apostle Says:

The doom of the Democratic Party is upon us. McMegan says that she registered as a Democrat yesterday. Ugh!!!!!!

  5. ed Says:

Seems confusing. I’m sure she’ll clear that up at her next press conference or on the Sunday Morning Talk Show Circuit.

  6. ringrid Says:

We just want coherent thoughts clearly expressed.

  7. Why oh why Says:

Palin is fighting the War on Grammar for the Joes 6 Pack. Coherent sentences are elitist west-coast relics from socialism.

  8. MikeJ Says:

She sounds more and more like a bad ai program.

    Racter/Eliza ‘08!

  9. Jeffrey Davis Says:

When Laurence Olivier was given an honorary Oscar, he delivered the funniest send up of speechifying ever. It went on forever without ever hitting sense or even a period. Would that Olivier had lived to see his star eclipsed. He’d have something funny to never get around to saying.

I don’t feel sorry for Palin. This is the horror show she apparently has long prepped for. A sane person of semi-soft intelligence or a non-terminally vain person would have fled McCain’s offer, but not the Divine Sarah. A man needs to know his limits even if he’s a woman.

  10. Sarah P Says:

I can understand where the Governor is coming from, with the mainstream media consisting mostly from the east coast elite and their questions being about specific things…kinda gotcha, you know, also we’re in crisis mode here with so many of our brave troops, and I’ve been so blessed and privileged to see them, working towards victory that John McCain brought us with the surge, and also the maintstream media is a filter with great Americans like the governor and John McCain being filtered. It’s gotta be all about balance. And my..I mean, the governor’s not paying taxes not being reported. It’s gotta be about fairness. Especially that part about the taxes. ;-)

  11. kth Says:

I wouldn’t worry about some kind of nefarious implication or undertone here. It’s not as if Palin has some thought that she is fumbling to articulate the words for. Rather, she just strings phrases together until she has used up the allotted time. There’s no thought at all behind the verbiage.

  12. Asher Says:

In fairness, the Fox transcript has her saying “those fighting for the freedom of the press.” But who knows.

  13. MikeJ Says:

I’ve always been against those stupid “english only” laws, but she’s made me rethink my position.

  14. Voice of Reason Says:

The truth is that I would like to rip off her face with a claw hammer, before beating her to death with a baseball bat.

  15. 24AheadDotCom Says:

I’m sure some people who read the quote understand immediately what she’s refering to: the MSM should try to avoid their habit of lying. She’s probably basing it on her own experience of the MSM lying about her. However, she’s probably not basing it on the past instances of MattY helping the MSM lie about her, since I’m sure she’s never been to minor blogs like this.

But, “liberals” should take heart about one thing: BHO is a great champion of the press. He’s not as great a champion of the press as Hugo Chavez is, but give him time.

P.S. Congrats to MattY on the link from The Corner.

  16. Jeffrey Davis Says:

ThinkProgress should remove the “Voice of Reason” comment above.

  17. Aubrey Maturin Says:

    She’s saying:

“It’s sadly ironic. Our soldiers are off fighting overseas to defend freedom, including freedom of the press. But instead of supporting their fight, the men and women of the press subvert our military’s efforts by being overly critical and unnecessarily second-guessing their tactics and mission from the safety provided by these very same soldiers.”

I think that’s what she wants to say. It’s an issue journalists have been wrestling with from the days of Ernie Pyle and Edward R. Murrow to David Halberstam and Walter Cronkite. It’s got to be tough to be a mom who has a son in the war hearing from politicians and reporters that the war is a bad idea and that we’re bound to lose.

She said this badly, sure. But she wants to put pressure on journalists to cheerlead military actions of the US government. And who knows what bad things will befall the reporter who does not comply I think the biggest risk is not taking her point of view seriously. From gay rights (limited) to abortion rights (reverse Roe v Wade) and taxes and nearshore drilling (cut and drill baby), she has ideas. And they’re wrong for the country.

  18. Boots Day Says:

That’s gotta be a fake Sarah P in No. 10. She didn’t say “maverick.”

  19. GP Says:

“we’ve really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting the freedom of the press”

Well, if you think that’s a weird comment, I still think this one from the debate is weirder:

You don’t have to believe me or John McCain on that. I would believe Petraeus and the leader of al Qaeda.

In all seriousness, it feels good to know that I don’t have to believe someone who believes the leader of Al-Qaeda.

  20. AssForAHeadDotCom Says:

The best way to avoid lying, of course, is to rely upon insinuation, for instance, never stating outright that you expect a Hispanic insurgency in the United States. Read more here. MattY doesn’t know this, because he is a hack, and would kill to have a traffic rank like this.

  21. brewmn Says:

“MattY doesn’t know this, because he is a hack, and would kill to have a traffic rank like this.”

Thanks for not linking to that unhinged freak’s site directly. I’d hate to push his traffic rank up into the 720,760s.

  22. wiley Says:

Might she not be saying that our soldiers are dying for the freedom of the press, yet the evil liberal media is abusing this freedom by asking her questions she doesn’t want to answer, and the evil liberal media should be grateful that they are still allowed their freedoms?

It IS all about HER, doncha know.

  23. idiotic Says:

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR MOOSEBURGER!!!

  24. Ed Marshall Says:

Thanks for not linking to that unhinged freak’s site directly. I’d hate to push his traffic rank up into the 720,760s.

I don’t know if that’s a joke or not, but I could build a blank web page and with the five or six computers I’ve got in house get an alexa rating like that with just me messing around a little bit every day.

  25. west coast Says:

Consider this: Governor Sarah Palin means exactly what she says. Neither more, nor less.

    Really.

As with George W. Bush, her garbled syntax is a way of hiding in plain sight. People say “she must’ve meant something else” when she meant precisely and exactly what she said.

She’s declared war on the press here. During the one debate she’ll have she asserted the job of the vice-president was to keep the president in line. Take her at her word, or be prepared to suck up another 4-8 years of tragedy for America.

  26. 55 Says:

    I’ve missed idiotic.

  27. Richard Steven Hack Says:

    I’ve missed idiotic, too.

    I’m gonna start posting:

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS! FOR CAMERON!

Got to drive those “Terminator” ratings up before Fox screws up and cancels the show despite being number five in Amazon downloads, and number three on Fox’s own ratings…and north of six million live and DVR viewers a week with illegal download viewers probably adding another million.

By the way, which one of you clowns is “TheTurk” who revealed himself to be an Yglesias reader over at “The Sarah Connor Society”?

Oh, was this thread about Palin?

    Who cares?

Gotta admit though, that statement Matt quoted was more than a little bizarre.
