One issue on which John McCain is no George W. Bush is the question of a Federal Marriage Amendment that would prevent states from granting equal marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. Bush is for it, McCain is against it. And now it seems Palin is for it:
Normally a VP nominee would avoid contradicting the top of the ticket, but perhaps this is pre-positioning for 2012.

Perhaps it’s simpler- she just doesn’t know McCain’s position.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
55:
It is both. She has no clue and she is positioning for a possible attempt in 2012.

“Normally a VP nominee would avoid contradicting the top of the ticket, but perhaps this is pre-positioning for 2012.”
I think you’re giving Governor Non-Sequitur a bit too much credit here for foresight and planning. Her role is to rally a base that doesn’t care much for McCain. She saw an opportunity to slip in a bit of hip, base-rallying bigotry, and she took it. McCain’s reasonable position on this issue means her role is to contradict him and placate the base.

LP: I think you are the one giving her too much credit. She slipped in a bit of hip, base-rallying bigotry because she is a hip, base-rallying bigot.
Nothing more, nothing less.

Perhaps she should run for the Presidency, of Alaska.
Maybe she already is.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I hope she does it. This sort of thing is mostly generation-based (e. g. If you tell a Gen-Xer about the t o-do over an inter-racial kiss on 1960’s Star Trek, they are likely to laugh in your face; same thingy with kids (anybody under 35 to me) who grew up with “Queer Eye” and the like on TV.) So if she wants to lead the GOP with that sort of BS, she will lead it yet further into the wilderness, and for more than 40 years. At least I hope so.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
How on earth did someone get a chance to question her?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
yeah, she may be ignorant of mccain’s position.
she is certainly spouting her own, bigoted position.
but the thing is: in a well-run campaign, she would know mccain’s position, and shut up about her own. if she weren’t sure about his, then she would definitely shut up about her own.
this sort of behavior is one of the signs that the mccain camp knows it is all over for them. she is saying whatever she wants, because there is no penalty for her saying whatever she wants.
there is no message control, because the campaign is in disarray, and everyone knows they’re going to lose.
so she can express the deepest depths of her wing-nut heart, to her wing-nut heart’s content.
and i hope she’ll keep doing it. she may think she’s positioning herself for 2012–she clearly knows 2008 is out of reach–but what she’s really doing is positioning herself for a national laughing-stock
October 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Leaving aside the topic she was discussing, what kind of bizarre philosophy of government is this? “I’m not going to judge individuals, telling them what they can and can’t do, but I can certainly take actions that are best for traditional marriage and cast votes to support it.”
I’m not going to tell people what they should do, but I’m going to pass laws that don’t let them do certain things. Glad we’re clear on that.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I, for one, commend Sarah Palin’s heroic defense of “traditional marriage” from adulterers and divorcees like John McCain.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
she’s positioning herself for cell no. 2012 in Anchorage State Pen we hope.
October 20th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
This is prepositioning for the wingnut welfare lecture-and-publishing circuit.

At least her hair style has gotten better. Somebody in the campaign must have paid for a stylist.
Somebody should have asked if she’s ever had her pussy eaten by a talented lesbian. Orgasms are known attitude changers.

McCain has flip-floped so often on this, who can keep track?
Back in March, McCain said he would support a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman if a federal court were to strike down state constitutional bans on gay marriage.

Look, people: everyone knows that marriage should be between two unwilling teenagers who haven’t finished high school. Get with the program! Traditional Shotgun Weddings FTW!

There’s taking one for the team, and then there’s HELL NO.
